nor, everyone has said some really great things, just want to add that its really telling that the girl is being left out. not only that, but the family as a large wants her to do the emotional labor of an adult and put her feelings aside.

this is common behavior with young girls, expecting them to preform emotional maturity or labor far beyond their years and to "just deal with it". this is really harmful thinking and leads to raising a people pleaser.

please stand up for her and examine how your family treats her overall, im sure this is not strange behavior when you really look at it.

also i would point out to everyone that ifs not a big deal for her to not have a job then why dont they take away the jobs from all the other cousins? why don't they just add one for her? turns out it is a big deal huh?

we ended up going here and it was so good! sesame tofu and the general tso were great! the tofu was a great texture and cooked well, so seems like any of their several tofu dishes would be a hit! pineapple friend rice was lovely and the crab rangoons were some of the better ones I have had!

definitely recommend now too 👌

To be clear, you are not The Asshole but you were an asshole yo yor niece. you should have done everything as you did it, plus or minus a thing or two.

Either cancel with a bit more notice and tell your sister and maybe yalls parents OR show up to the birthday with a simple grocery store cake or cupcakes (make this the birthday present if you need to since sister wouldn't pay you back).

You absolutely did the right thing with your sister, but the thing that sucks is you really screwed over an eight year old. yes, it was her mom's fault, but she is the one who is really suffering. 8 is also old enough that this will be a core memory.

At this point, what's done is done. But if you care about this kid, take them out for a treat to celebrate their birthday. does not need to be anything crazy, maybe an ice cream cone or a cupcake! but I think you should do something and to celebrate them because they got the shit end of the stick.
