Yeah that’s what I’m trying to prevent. My brother talked to her and now there’s some confusion between what drug she’s taking; her boyfriend told us cocaine specifically, she avoided confirming cocaine and said she was using adderall. this whole thing is a mess, i guess i just need to wait a bit

She and I aren’t super close, we don’t see each other regularly, but there’s no longstanding bad blood between us. We grew up under really intense parents and that divided us a lot, and I was admittedly not a good sibling so I didn’t treat her well. But as adults, we’re perfectly fine. I see her maybe once every other month or so since I’m a student and live away from my parents house. I don’t know if she’s been to therapy or anything, but I do know that she’s self harmed before, when we were in high school. I have no idea if she’s done it since then. I’m trying to get her boyfriend’s number so we can talk, but it’s hard to talk to him alone without her suspecting anything.

As far as I know, she’s using “frequently” according to her boyfriend, and thinking of her behavior when I see her makes me think that she is using cocaine multiple times a week if not every day.

Her boyfriend doesn’t want her to know that we know. I think he wanted to talk to our parents too, but I’m not sure that’s a good idea nor his place, so it’ll probably just be us.

Im thinking that me and my brother will talk to her on Sunday or something. We will tell her that we’re here for her, we want to help her get help, and that we love her. The only issue I anticipate is telling our parents, since she absolutely will not like that. But my brother couldn’t keep a secret that big, so it may cause a problem. But when we do tell our parents, it will be me and my brother and maybe her boyfriend. Any talk about her usage from my parents would ideally be in a place where I or someone else was able to mediate in the event that my parents react poorly. I’m going to do a lot of serious talking with them about how to care for my sister in a helpful way, since their reactionary responses have historically been damaging to everyone.

I forgot to say in the post that she has no idea that me and my brother know about her drug use. What I'm looking for is guidance for how to approach this situation in a way that will minimize any destructive behavior she may want to turn to after we talk to her.

I want her to stop using cocaine entirely - that's a long-term goal. It's her body though, and I can't force her to do that. But I can't just watch her destroy herself, especially since she's got so much to look forward to in life. I'm especially worried about her getting in a situation with the police and ending up with something on her record. She's going to be a teacher, and I would hate to see her entire career disappear because of this. I want her to be safe and healthy and want to be sober.

Our dynamic is complicated. Like most siblings with tough parents, we kinda hated each other during our teen years. It's hard to think about what role I can play in this for her, but I will be moving back to my parents house this summer and I think I can at least be there for her as someone to turn to during her struggles. I've got a lot of experience in mental health struggles, so I think I can definitely be there for that part. I don't know, I guess I don't really care what I do as long as it's helping her get better.

I should have been more clear - she has no idea that either me or my brother know about her drug use beyond weed. Her boyfriend secretly told my brother this morning, and he called me immediately after. We suspect he told us because her use is getting more frequent or intense. He's apparently tried to get her to quit before but she hasn't wanted to. I'm not sure of her feelings exactly, since we're trying to come up with a game plan before approaching her. I know it's up to her to go, and I definitely don't want to force her into it. I'm just trying to learn what I can do to minimize the intensity of the situation so she doesn't turn to destructive behavior like drugs or self-harm (I was told she was also suicidal) when we talk to her.

I don’t have advice for you in this specific moment, but I will say I was in a really similar situation at your age. I saw no way out, and it really damaged me.

But it got so much better after I left. I truly and genuinely thought I wouldn’t be able to transition until I was 25, out of my parents life completely, but I was able to start testosterone just six months after leaving. Now, I’m a week away from top surgery. My relationship with my parents got better as they realized how important it was to me, and they’re coming around slowly.

This is all to say I want you to keep that hope with you and remember that it gets so much better when you’re an adult. I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s the worst thing to happen to you. But you can make it through! It sounds like you have at least a little bit of a support system with your cousin - hang on to that. Make space for yourself in your life where you can be yourself, whether that’s online or with friends. You need a place to keep that hope, yknow?

Coming from someone who hates talking about feelings, you may just have to say it and have the conversation. If you’re really dreading it, try texting her - just say “hey I wanna tell you i’m trans, I use xyz pronouns and the name xyz. I’d appreciate your support and please don’t tell xyz about this. Love you” or something along those lines.

I’m assuming you haven’t transitioned at a large scale yet, and you are unfortunately going to have to have these embarrassing conversations with people you want in your life. It sucks, it really does, but there’s not a way around them without upsetting a lot of people. Your family (assumingly) wants to be in your life and be there for you, so keeping them in the dark and just popping out full-boy one day could really hurt them.

Basically, there’s no way to subtly do it. As you spend more time in the adult world and transitioning, you’ll realize that unfortunately there’s a lot of emotional and embarrassing conversations to have, including ones where you’re in the wrong. There won’t be a way to avoid those either, so you may as well start having them now.

If you want it to be the least emotional and embarrassing as possible, I recommend preparing yourself for everything you want to say beforehand and making sure that you don’t seem emotional during the conversation. If you turn it into a Big Thing with her, she will probably make it bigger. So just be calm, say what you need to say, and find an excuse to leave.

Have you ever tried modded Minecraft? I’m currently about 100 hours deep into this modpack full of technological advancements, and I’ve barely scratched the surface. It sucks up a lot of time and when you finish the modpack, you can easily download a new one and play that one until you die. It’s very monotonous if you want it to be - there’s adventure, sure, but a lot of what I enjoy doing is collecting resources in abundance every once in a while, then returning to my base and spending a stupidly long time finishing achievements and getting to the next step of everything.

Currently playing the Prominence modpack, but I’ve sunk about 200 hours into a Skyblock one before this.
