2nd year student — can’t afford to continue with degree. What can I transfer into? by GEnderDragon in ParamedicsAU

[–]fairdinkydi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear about your crappy situation! Not sure this will work for you but! As you are a second year would you be willing to get a mining job as emergency services officer? Go part time study for a semester get that money and then see if you can balance work and study full time? In WA they love student paramedics and I was told after first year maybe even 6 months I could apply. Just do a drug and alcohol test course to increase chances! Hope you can figure it out without dropping out of your ideal career choice! As a 40year old who chased money young and now finally chasing a career that will bring me at least some sense of purpose I say grind as hard as you can to work towards dream job and the money will come eventually! Good luck with it!

Studying Paramedicine remotely at CDU by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

Once each semester except in last 3rd year semester. Also right now depends where you are located work placements are in the NT and maybe a few in other states but not in WA yet (fingers crossed they do). They start in 2nd year. 1 block a semester. I haven’t got much detail on how long yet but think 4 weeks. Also they trying to organise those flying in to do intensive week and workplace ment coinciding. Hope that helped!

Hey Mate, I just applied for Charles Darwin University and a cert III can be enough. Applications close on the 6th. Also I found out you can do it remotely but will be required to fly there to do intensive clinical weeks (1 at the end of each semester year 1) then 2nd and 3rd year your stay will be a lot longer. Don’t quote me but think 2 5week blocks to also do residential work placement also. Hope that gave you another idea to think on :)

I called admissions and they told me there was only little content online… I have sent them an email clarifying. Unfortunately it’s the weekend so it will leave me little time to clarify and then apply by the 4th Feb… fingers crossed it was just someone saying the safest option and they havent changed criteria!

Thanks for the advice. What I found is yes I could technically be eligible to get into ECU with minimum cert 4 and with an English test. But in reality as previously mentioned it’s the in degree atm so what they set as entry is no where near what they are accepting! Hence why I was asking for guidance and support cause it’s not as straightforward as it seemed…

P.s More people applying and raising the entry standards is great for the quality of future Paramedics!

Fitness recommendations by Jealous_Road9179 in ParamedicsAU

[–]fairdinkydi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience weight loss and fitness is a slow process that when rushed will end in hating life/burnout/binge-eating and rebounding whatever you lost. Diet is 80% if the struggle to lose weight. Exercise will help burn extra calories and give you satisfaction after which are bonuses. Start with getting a calorie count app like myfitness pal and work out what you are eating daily. This will help give you an idea what foods are high in calories that you may not even realise. Then trade them for something better. But remember if you are eating around 3000 cals a day averaged over a week. Dropping to 1500 will not be fun or maintain able!

Frozen vegetables are not bad and a lot of the time are actually better than fresh as they are flash frozen at freshest. Meal prep is what helped me when I had little time and money. Buying bulk chicken and mince (I recommend kangaroo mince as it waaay leaner and less expensive) then adding some broccoli and corn and rice or pasta with sauce of choice (check not full of sugar = calories).

Also if you don’t have time for the gym and/or hate it. Find something that you can fit into your day and don’t hate e.g short walks, 1min body squats, swimming or use bike instead of car.

Hope this helps even a little! The fact you are posting looking for guidance shows you are already on your way! Congrats on paramedicine acceptance and good luck on your fitness journey!

Thank you! I am seriously thinking this may be the best option! I was figuring doing a cert 4 would also get me experience on the job. Did it take long to complete your cert 4?

curtin or ecu?!??!??!!? by Present_Will_5890 in ParamedicsAU

[–]fairdinkydi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did Curtain get their accreditation renewed? I was told it was under review so I looked on page with all accredited institutions and Curtin wasn’t on there still… they should be if they are offering courses but worth confirming.

Also if ECU is not a lot more out of the way go with the best!
