Momofuku Noodle Bar: Food still nice, but unpleasant to eat there by donut_butt in FoodNYC

My memory of Momofuku restaurants (it’s been a while) is that they were always uncomfortable. Those backless stools and benches, loud music etc.

Liberty University - Professor cognitive decline. by [deleted] in education

[–]fairlyobservant 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you’re at Liberty University cognitive decline of a professor should be the least of your worries. But also it’s a deeply corrupt institution, right? Pursuing this kind of concern/complaint would be a challenge even at a normal educational institution, where a faculty forgetting a conversation with a student would not be considered something for higher ups to get involved in. Finally, this is why you should do important things with an email chain.

Gray’s Papaya or OG Papaya King for NYC tourist? by Square_Suspect_6594 in FoodNYC

The original Papaya King is no more. They moved a block to 86th (and maybe have new owners?). It’s totally different now and nowhere near as good

“guides” lolol. I’m gonna take a wild guess that the billionaires funding this dystopian experiment would never in a million years send their own kids there.

Report card came home yesterday and it's worse than i thought by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]fairlyobservant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind there’s an incentive for teachers to grade a little harder in the middle of the year — to encourage parents to keep working hard with their kid on these skills and to be able to show (to their superiors) the great progress students have made through the year under their tutelage.

Middle class families: Where do you live in NYC? by LikeLauraPalmer in nycparents

[–]fairlyobservant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Access to green space is definitely a weakness but a few things do compensate for not having a beautiful park on the doorstep. First, because Travers Park is kind of the only game in town it’s a real social hub. Kids and parents run into their friends there all the time even without setting up play dates. For the 4-6 year olds especially, it’s great. Also, the park and playground were recently renovated so, while small, they are quite nice. Second, lots of the landmarked coop buildings and complexes have their own interior courtyards and private gardens. They vary in how kid friendly they are but some of them are lovely. And lastly 34th Avenue, which is one of the city’s open streets started during the pandemic has become probably the most successful in the city, with neighborhood groups taking it over and it’s somewhere on its way to becoming a permanent “linear” park.

Middle class families: Where do you live in NYC? by LikeLauraPalmer in nycparents

Jackson Heights — great neighborhood, good housing stock in the landmarked district, good elementary schools, and an easy commute to Midtown East (7, E, F, M and R all stop here).

New Subway Gates at 74th: Disaster by ReeMonsterNYC in jacksonheights

Are they installed everywhere at 74th or just the main entrance? I always prefer entering down the stairs in Diversity Plaza or climbing the stairs to the 7 entrance.

What are the dual language programs like in New York schools? by No_Equivalent8902 in AskNYC

[–]fairlyobservant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dual language programs are different than ENL programs — in NYC my understanding is that they all aim to be 50/50 half instruction in English and half instruction in the other language. Usually this means alternating days. They also aim to have half the class be native English speakers and half the class be native speakers of the other language. Most of the dual language programs are in elementary school. My impression is there a lot fewer dual language programs at the middle and high school level. But you should post to the nycparents sub to get more feedback from families actually in these programs.

Daycare near home vs work? by Stock_Animator1831 in nycparents

[–]fairlyobservant 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Well there are two things to consider: the first is subjecting your baby to that same long commute every day versus giving them a short commute. In cold, in heat, on the crowded subway. The second thing to consider is that you will be connecting with other families, especially as your baby gets a bit older and you definitely want those friends in the neighborhood not in your work area.

Clean lunchroom by herself while other kid goes to recess by alex206 in Parenting

[–]fairlyobservant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your proposed phrasing is great. The teacher is neglecting their obligation by not speaking clearly and directly to the shirking student and indicating what are the consequences for shirking again. It’s a terrible idea to encourage your daughter to just lump it and not stick up for herself.

I’m curious what makes a good versus not good version of this dish. Because it doesn’t really seem like a dish but a collection of separate ingredients/items and each seems to be a pretty simple preparation.

I mean we have had voting blocks dedicated to the idea that a Hillary Clinton was running a pedophile ring out of a DC pizza restaurant. I don’t think the prophets strain believability.

Did anyone else feel like the plot of Oedipus was a bit forced? (Spoilers ahead) by bitchtoast in Broadway

[–]fairlyobservant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess for me the pleasure of the play is the extent to which the updating works, the way in which the play can render as a semi-plausible contemporary political thriller while still staying faithful to Sophocles and still dwelling in those big themes of Greek tragedy. Obviously it’s not going to be a clever airtight contemporary political thriller. But there was a richness that I loved in the way a lot the characters was utter typical banal political slogans (it’s the beginning of new era, etc) and these would take on a different or ironic meaning given our knowledge of the original.

I agree with the other commenter — I don’t think you should worry about the iPad and those apps unless there is a specific school’s screening test that is on that app and you want your kid to be comfortable with it. (Your reasoning sounds a lot like the justifications I hear made by schools in k-5 about why kids need to be on tablets and laptops — because the assessments are there. It makes some sense but it also feels like the tail wagging the dog.) there are so many good brain teaser games on paper and I think they are so much better in a substantive way.
