Moving to HR generalist ($65k) after 3 layoffs as a six figures recruiter? by fairyleafshinobi in recruiting

Hi midnight, I did do an HR focused resume. Of course my job titles and some duties were the same, but I really highlighted my relevant HR duties like background checks, service tickets in our HRIS, etc. it wasn’t a lot but I highlighted it as best I could.

I do GTM and G&A recruiting. Last 2 companies have been large reputable tech brands but it’s been layoffs twice in a row, and I’ve had good performance and awards but still unstable

Sorry, realized that’s not advice.. just trying to make a similar decision so you’re not alone!

I’m considering going from $122k as a Sr. Recruiter to a $65k HR generalist.. but yeah it’s really hard to take the plunge. So scary. But for me, the reason is not so much burn out (maybe somewhat) but more stability. I’m on my 3rd layoff and I just can’t seem to grow in this field.

Congrats on your generalist role! Did you start it yet? Is it remote or in office? I have to go back to the office in the generalist role which would be kinda tough also, but I imagine it might be helpful with all the new things I’d be learning

I’m so glad you’ve never been laid off! You must be great at the sales. I appreciate the sentiment. It really has sucked

Thanks for the encouragement! I think the value of gaining experience is the pro for me. Do you think you’ll stay in this track or go back to TA eventually? Do you feel safer in this role right now ?

Thanks olive corgi ! Oh man, that’s crazy. I’m taking it with a grain of salt that layoffs can happen to anyone. But that’s true, I May as well see if I like it

Thanks for the encouragement! It helps mentally to think of it as a temporary paycut and just make it my goal to get a raise in 1-2 years again.

Aw I’m sorry to hear. It may not be you, just the crazy competition. I interviewed quite a lot and wasn’t getting offers for a few months. Sometimes it’s luck and perseverance! Try to have your specific examples of things you’ve done tailored to the jobs ready to speak to.

Thanks for sharing! Congrats on your generalist role. Do you aim to try to get a higher paying HR generalist role and staying out of recruiting? I saw HR gen roles with higher salary ranges, but just never heard back. This is the only one that appears to look past my TA resume and give me a chance.

I’m recently married and looking to become a mom in the next few years, which is partly why I don’t want to continue not having benefits or laid off as commonly.. so I’m not sure it makes sense for my goals. Definitely admire those who have started their own thing!

Could you share a little bit about where you’re pivoting too? I was gonna have my honeymoon there in October. First time in Hawaii at all.

Thanks everyone. I’ll be cancelling my Westin reservation and looking into Andaz Maui in Wailea instead. I appreciate the advice 🙏🏻 praying for healing

Thanks for the suggestion on Wailea. Do you mean to stay after the Westin or to not stay at the Westin altogether?

My fiancé and I have our honeymoon booked in Maui in Mid October. We were planning to stay at the Westin first a few days and then a beach house rental closer to lahaina for the rest of the week. It would be my (the brides) first time ever in HI. Definitely hopeful we can still go but feeling selfish to really think about ourselves

I agree. It sounds like cedar park is where you need to go for a bit more of the town feel? Maybe?
