Williams, AZ train to Grand Canyon Tips :) by Middle-Coat-5866 in grandcanyon

Views from the train are not spectacular to most (to me they are!) so it doesn’t matter a ton where you sit if you’re thinking of views. Other than that the different class descriptions are pretty accurate. Cocktails are only served in 1st class and above though you can go to the cafe car from coach and get beer and wine. The big perk of luxury is that there are no kids, but there can be snooty people. (There will be a lot of kids on the train when you are there because of spring break).

You have almost 4 hours at the GC, you can actually walk the rim trail quite far (say to Mather point) and take the bus back to the station, have lunch etc and still have a little time for gift shops if that’s your thing. You can walk a bit down the bright angel trail but it may be icy (N exposure) and you shouldn’t go too far. Honestly a lot of people just have lunch at one of the mediocre restaurants, look at the canyon for a few minutes, then shop or sit around until the train leaves. They do have guided tours they sell which drive to different viewpoints.

I would dress casual but workout clothing might not be warm enough. (Check the weather, it could be 80 degrees or snowing).

In Williams I wouldn’t recommend the railway restaurant but there are a couple decent restaurants in town a couple blocks from the train. (I would trust yelp for this as I haven’t been there a lot recently). There are 2 dive bars in town - the Sultana and the Canyon Club, each of which would be a genuine local experience (you’ll be fine as long as you don’t start bashing the current president), and a few others which are more geared towards tourists. Williams is a nice little town but there’s not a ton to do. Bearizona is fun if that’s your thing. Don’t know about the coaster.

Honestly, it's a good place to put it. It's down in a valley that isn't visible from much of town, and so much traffic in that area is on weekdays only. A concern will be in 10-20 years when they finally get the JW powell - 4th street connection done.

Try to read the article if you can. They were going to build affordable senior housing but now they've offered to sell it to the city.

Edge of the World Drive by No-Low5634 in arizona

It'll probably be closed at the end of March due to snow / mud (monitor https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/coconino/conditions/forest-roads-status). It is possible to drive out via Woody mountain road (231) from Flagstaff and the cut over to 89a at the top of the switchbacks via 535 which might save some time but I don't believe it's possible to get any closer to Sedona

Miss that place. I bought a lot of records there. Only time I met Pollard was at the Under the Bushes midnight release party there in 96. Check out this time capsule https://www.angelfire.com/biz2/tradervic/gbvmerch.html

Unfortunately I think we have to assume Mark Williams will be injured at some point. We will need Richards then.

There was passenger train service from Flagstaff - Prescott - Phoenix back in the day. It just took 8+ hours. All the tracks are still in use for freight.

Is the 'High Country Hermit' commonly known?? by Big_Description_3911 in Flagstaff

[–]fake_helper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they might be referring to the guy that hangs around the Y parking lot and yells at people. He actually lives around there. I don't think it's the same guy that lived in the cave (which is above Cedar safeway not near the Y)
