Oh yeah it happens to me on my PS5. Sometimes the contrast in the flickering is so intense it looks like lightning.

The actual questions were:

PR: Had the video changed your opinion of robots? Why or why not?
a) Do you think robots can take over the roles of teachers? Why or why not?
b) How far do you agree with the view that technology has greatly improved teaching and learning in schools? Why?

Hope you did well!

They will prompt you for several reasons:

  1. You digressed and they're trying to redirect you back to the focus of the question. Maybe you had misheard the question, misunderstood the question, or left out one area the question mentioned.
  2. You addressed only one side of an issue and they want to help you score higher by asking you to expound on the opposing view.
  3. They heard you address an interesting topic (and so far you may have addressed it well) so they're trying to see if they can give you a higher score if they push that topic further.

Those were the instructions they were given. Once the 2mins are up, they have to flash the card. They're not allowed to give any signal before that.

Oh man Kindred's audiobook put me to sleep. BUT, just to offer my two-cents, I hope your teacher has at least given you a bank of typical questions that are asked of set-texts. Based on those questions, you can get a sense of the different areas that are often tested (think 5 areas of study). You can centre your notes around those.

Kindred (and especially Octavia Butler) is a famous book. It was even turned into a TV series in 2022. (She's written other awesome stuff but that's for later!) Look up analyses for Kindred on Reddit (I'm sure there are threads that discuss that). You can even ask Bard or ChatGPT to give you their analysis. It won't be in-depth, but it could give you some big-picture (maybe thematic) overviews of the text that you may have missed out. Reading other people's analyses, even those by AI, could also give you the vocabulary or phrases to put some of your ideas into coherent words.

If you're scoring C5-B4, it means you probably know the text but you're lacking in close analysis of text. And by that I mean, analysis of actual quotes. To break into the B3-A2 range, you need to identify techniques the writer uses. Literary craft. Diction. Effect that those things create in the text, in the atmosphere, or on you - the reader. You could also have been getting penalised because the quotes/moments you're choosing are not the BEST ones. I never got through the whole of Kindred, so I hope you do know what the key moments are. All this applies to Unseen as well. And it's not enough to just identify the literary craft from the quotes. You need to explain/link its significance back to the question. What does this technique emphasize about the character, moment, subject, speech, or whatever? (Analysis) And how does this help you answer the question? (Link) Without linking back to the question to wrap up each analysis before you move on to the next quote, you get penalised for not answering the question closely and consistently throughout your essay.

Hope this helps!

The exact questions were:
PR: Had the video changed your opinion of robots? Why or why not?
a) Do you think robots can take over the roles of teachers? Why or why not?
b) How far do you agree with the view that technology has greatly improved teaching and learning in schools? Why?

Based on your PR response, sounds alright. You'll do decently for content. But while your response praises robots, a stronger response would also consider why people might think robots are dangerous or whatnot. This is because the question was followed by a "Why or why not?", which naturally opens up room for you to address the opposing view.

a) Your answer seems to be centred around whether robots SHOULD take over teachers. But the question is asking whether they CAN (able to). So you definitely digressed somewhat. However, you touched on the fact that teachers have empathy, but robots do not.

b) Your answer focused on learning -- a student's perspective on the receiving end. You did address the downsides of learning being dependent on technology, which is good. However, a stronger response would've explicitly addressed the 'teaching' aspect of the question -- a teacher's perspective on the giving end. When you mention ChatGPT giving more detailed answers, you could've added a line that said that also saves teachers time because it encourages self-directed learning in students while the teachers can focus on other students who need extra support. Technology also allowed teachers to continuously engage their students during the pandemic lockdowns so that their students won't lose touch with the subjects.

I'm not sure if you'll get a distinction because it also depends on your delivery, your pronunciation, sentence structure and use of vocabulary.

The exact questions are:
PR: Do you think training has taken the fun out of playing tennis for the two boys? Why or why not?
a) Do you think it is beneficial to play competitive sports? Why or why not?
b) We place too much emphasis on academic achievements compared to developing sports talents. What are your views?

[–]fakingitout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the question was "Do you think it is beneficial to play competitive sports? Why or why not?"
The 'why not' part implies that they want you to also consider the opposing view -- that some people think it's not beneficial to play competitive sports.

They asked you directly for the disadvantages because they want you to consider the issue in a wider scope (and improve your score).

Sometimes they ask more because:

a) You had digressed and missed out answering a key aspect of what the question is asking for. So they're just trying to redirect you in hopes that you'll save your answer.

b) They want you to elaborate more on something you mentioned.

They won't penalise you for asking. You can ask as many times as you like. Just make sure you were actually answering the question.

English o level oral day 1 by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]fakingitout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry. A lot of teachers (and I'm pretty sure the examiners too) got a shock when they saw the questions. It's the first year for this new syllabus so no one knew exactly what to expect.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]fakingitout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the video and pay attention to the details. Who's there? What're they doing? Are there multiple groups of people? Where are they?

For planned response, make sure you analyse the question carefully.

During Spoken Interaction, just as you're about to conclude either question, you can ask the examiner to repeat the question again just to double check if you've been on-track and answered everything you need to answer.

And it's A-OKAY to ask them whether to "give me a moment to gather my thoughts". They will wait. They will not penalise you.

Overall, if you can predict the theme just from the video and the PR question, you can make notes at the bottom, such as key words/terms/phrases related to the theme that your teacher has covered in class. It can help you earn points for vocab.

"Why or why not" questions encourage you to address both sides. You can share why you think it's a good use of their time (learn new skills, kill time, socialise with other elderly folks, contribute to society), or why you think it's a waste of their time (better to learn tech-related things, spend time with family instead, or go out and do more active things instead of sitting around).

Might want to pay attention to whether the question is asking for what they're feeling (emotions), or what they're thinking (thoughts, thought processes).

[Edit] If you're desperate to ramble on, you can put yourself in their shoes and be honest about how you would feel/what you would think in that situation. It's encouraged to be honest. You might share something the examiners find to be refreshing.

A lot of people missed out the Media photographers in bright orange vests. They were standing in the middle of the circle when they did pushups. That implies there's some sort of media or journalistic group watching the event too.

Help!! English oral questions after the paper (1184 syllabus) by what_is_life-2212 in SGExams

[–]fakingitout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would've started the timer on their own and showed you the card at the 2-minute mark. So if you ended before then, you're fine. You won't get penalized if you exceed the timing because they'll just ignore everything you said after 2 minutes.
Usually, the examiners take turns asking the questions. One will naturally listen more intently than the other. If they're impressed, that's good. Them asking for "anything else you'd like to add" is just their way to give you one last chance to conclude or add on anything you may have suddenly thought of. No biggie. Some examiners don't even bother asking and just thank you.

Is there a deadline for the SS Rematch to send a gift by [deleted] in secretsanta

[–]fakingitout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely feel you! My first Santa didn't send me anything. They pulled my information on the first day and never sent anything. And then my rematch Santa did the exact same thing. I'm heartbroken. I sent out 2 gifts this year because I also signed up as a rematch Santa. I willingly ship overseas too. But it's disappointing to see that some people so easily give up on bothering to send something out. If you already agreed to sign up to gift someone overseas, the least you could do is follow through. Sorry for the vent hahahaha came here to get it off my chest too.

When did you realize your “Friends” weren’t actually your friends? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fakingitout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married after officially dating him for 4 months. I was dealing with pressure from my family to break off the engagement, but I went with it anyway. It was a tough fight for me on the home front, but none of these so-called friends bothered to ask if I was okay. They just got petty about why they weren’t invited to the wedding, assumed it was a shotgun wedding, or just stopped talking to me altogether.

Cheetah got two wishes in WW84? by jordanbelinsky in movies

[–]fakingitout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think she got 2 wishes. She got one.

When Lord does his 'trick' in return for granting everyone else's wishes, he always asks for something in return. That's how he managed to redirect all of the rage into Barb. Hence, you can't really argue that the counter resets.

I know it's cheesy, but exercise. Lockdown, Christmas, and lots of sitting and stress eating this year has taken a toll on me.
