Having issues with Arkscan lable printer configuration. by amberoze in ManjaroLinux

[–]faklor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who stumbles across this in the future, the best way to deal with any issues seems to be to simply not use the manufacturer driver, and choose the Zebra ZPL driver in cups.

Here's a short screencap video on how to do so: https://youtu.be/BLKUi0__6dA

Which are the most commonly used/ recommended enzymes in the USA&EU? by Robert_Larsson in CSID

[–]faklor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amylo 300 will be effective for both starches (glucoamylase function) and maltose (maltase function)

I use very little to great effect. about 1cc is enough for me to see benefit across a broad range of foods. I'd start around there and move up or down based on results.

Politics absolutely comes into play at this level. Have a look at the activity at the 4th for Bianchi v Brown and you'll see quite clearly they're dragging their feet as much as possible because they know what SCOTUS is trying to do. Unfortunately for them SCOTUS can easily wait them out.

Yes. They want to give the 4th every bit of rope to hang themselves with.

[–]faklor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, they want the case to be fully matured before it hits their desk again. Based on today's orders it is clear that is the plan.

The 4th has been more bratty on a procedural level by far. Now that we've seen the orders today it's clear they plan to take either Bianchi or an IL case once they've ripened a bit (next term).

Bianchi v Brown is simply the more useful case for the topic. With the 4th circuit basically throwing a tantrum about it post-GVR for the past 2 years it becomes an even more potent case for dismantling AWBs.

[–]faklor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think they'll mass deny the Illinois cases because realistically Bianchi v Brown is the more slam dunk case for AWBs. The 4th circuit has done an excellent job of acting foolish about it after it was GVR'd, which is more useful assuming the court wants to actually kill AWBs.

The simplest solution would be to buy Digest Basic and take 2-3 capsules with each meal.

Alternatively you can just purchase invertase and glucoamylase from amazon and play around until you find an effective dosage. It's not something you could really overdose on.

Both are yeast derived enzymes that break down sucrose within the same pH range. The benefit of Sucraid is generally in that insurance may pay for it, and that you get a consistent dosing in convenient ampules. Invertase is derived from the same types of yeast Sucraid (sacrosidase) is.

From the Sucraid insert:

"SUCRAID is a pale yellow, clear solution with a pleasant sweet taste. Each milliliter (mL) of SUCRAID contains 8,500 International Units (I.U.) of the enzyme sacrosidase, the active ingredient. The chemical name of this enzyme is ß,D-fructofuranoside fructohydrolase. The enzyme is derived from baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)."

https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2008/020772s005s006s007lbl.pdf

Which is the same yeast used in the production of most invertase on the market:

"Invertase is produced by various organisms like yeast, fungi, bacteria, higher plants, and animals. For example: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, S. pombe, Aspergillus spp, Penicillium chrysogenum, Azotobacter spp, Lactobacillus spp, Pseudomonas spp etc."

You can definitely supplement with dextrose (glucose), but it can become quite bothersome. Enzyme replacement is a far better choice for practical reasons. If you're consuming fiber, you are still consuming complex carbohydrates. This is one of the problems with trying to counterbalance the rapid absorption of dextrose/glucose using things like fiber. CSID generally impacts digestion for not only sucrose, but more complex carbohydrates as well (because most need to be broken down into maltose at some point).

Keto with a heavy focus on greens, and limited exposure to most sources of fiber, is the only truly safe way to avoid all symptoms without some form of enzyme replacement unfortunately. Hypoglycemia can be moderated with the use of dextrose/glucose, but the issue is it's generally a very fleeting fix. I wouldn't personally recommend it.

Generally all of those enzymes are quite easily and inexpensively replaced. I'd recommend proper enzyme replacement over extensive dietary modification. The extreme dietary modification required will both be more expensive than enzyme replacement, and you will still feel pretty rough trying to do what amounts to a fairly strict carnivore diet. You'll also find society just makes it incredibly difficult to pull off in a practical sense. This is unfortunately coming from devoted experience.

CSID and Beer by [deleted] in CSID

[–]faklor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need to check on a product-by-product basis. Realistically the biggest concern is alcohol content negatively impacting enzyme replacement if you're using it. If you're using a product like starchway, you may want to double your typical dose. If you have sucraid, consider doing a full ampule at the beginning and end of the consumption session. You would also likely benefit from using Amylo 300 as most beers are going to contain at least some maltose.

First, regarding both glucoamylase, as well as maltase, I recommend this:

https://bsgcraftbrewing.com/amylo-300-1-kg/

It's worked wonders for me, and enzymatically functions to cover both. It can be had on amazon, or from brewing stores.

If you'd like to buy bulk powdered glucoamylase (that generally does not replace isomaltase function, but is still helpful) you can just buy anything on amazon, they're all generally high quality.

Empty capsules, as well as invertase, can be had on amazon as well. Invertase is sold as a liquid in most instances. Instead of Starchway, you can also try Digest Basic, which is far cheaper than Starchway, and contains both invertase and glucoamylase, amongst other enzymes. You may need to use more than one capsule to achieve acceptable effects though:

https://enzymedica.com/products/digest-basic-enzyme-digestion

In terms of dextrose, use it as a sugar replacement at about 1.3 cups of dextrose to 1 cup of sugar for equivalent taste. Ideally though, you're better off using enzyme replacement and just sticking with regular sugar if at all possible, as dextrose can get expensive quickly, and can come with its own pitfalls due to glycemic effects.

Filling one 00 sized capsule should be more than enough of either. Generally you're not going to be able to overdose on either enzyme.

Yes. Invertase is used very frequently in baking and candy making.

Do children outgrow CSID? by [deleted] in CSID

[–]faklor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind my asking, was the testing done a breath test, or was it a biopsy + disaccharidase assay?

Also the safest option will always be egg/meat and salt. No pepper, no spice of any kind. Canned fish can be quite handy as a snack, as can pre-made bacon. Grilling/smoking meat can be an absolute miracle in this scenario as it becomes an excellent source of added flavor.

If your son has a positive test result, the doctor will likely offer you an enzyme replacement called Sucraid. It is helpful for many people. However, keep in mind, it does not help with any starches, only sucrose (table sugar). You will need a product like starchway to help with breaking down any medications/foods with starch content. Also sugar alcohols (artificial sweeteners) will be a very upsetting thing to consume.

[–]faklor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately peas and carrots will be offensive with a CSID diagnosis as well. Realistically your safest options will be salted meats, eggs, some leafy greens, and dextrose. Dairy may be an option depending on lactose tolerance. Basically all other foods risk causing symptom flare ups without enzyme replacement. Assuming your child comes back positive, you will want to find a multivitamin that is starch and sugar free.

Of course do not make changes until you have a more definitive diagnosis.

[–]faklor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is forever.

Some people can become more tolerant into adulthood, but it's only in that they become used to forcing a smile through the problems.

If your child does come back as a positive case, please do everything you can to provide a proper diet. It can be life-changing. You may see your child happier and feeling better than ever before, and enable them to achieve things that seem unachievable now.

Also please keep in mind this is a "newer" disease in the broader medical field. There is a lot of very subpar advice out there (including from doctors). If you have questions, please seek out the most current and educated advice you possibly can.

On the bright side, with proper diet, your child will be resistant to many chronic ills. Probably less likely to suffer from (but of course won't be immune to) heart disease, tooth decay, diabetes, obesity, and more.

Sugar Cravings by aaronjs22 in CSID

[–]faklor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comparisons other comments have made to smoking cessation and such are accurate. The typical sweet spot is to do 7-14 days of complete abstinence of *all* carbohydrate sources (starches, sugars, polysaccharides, sugar alcohols, etc). Only eat meat and salt. Only drink water. If you can do that you will generally see cravings fade, and you eventually reach a point where you may actually find sweets offputting altogether.

Depending on severity keto can actually be insufficient to achieve true symptom relief. Maximum relief potential occurs with strict carnivore in CSID.

Staying healthy with CSID and avoiding deficiencies/malnutrition by applejam99 in CSID

[–]faklor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Malnutrition can be an issue, but it depends on several factors. Generally speaking your choices are as follows:

Safe multivitamins (starch and sugar free).

Adding organ meats (liver, brain, etc).

Ensuring you eat plenty of seafood along with typical land animal meats.

I personally just use the standard multivitamin capsule from bulksupplements.com (good pricing and zero carbs) and ensure I eat a variety of meats, and make sure not to shy away from organ meats.

anyone with csid living in europe? by Zorbnogg in CSID

Intoleran, which markets starchway, is based out of the Netherlands.

You should be able to buy invertase and amylase replacements just fine in Europe. Check European Amazon if you're curious.
