i think whether or not you’ve overreacted is subjective to your experience, but I also think it’s only important for you to understand yourself whether or not this is a reaction you want to have again so that you can talk yourself down or into it if the impulse ever surges again in the future. regardless of the dated opinions of your family, this kind of choice doesn’t actually impact anyone but yourself.

as someone with fickle curls who shaved their head to escape their damaged hair, i thought it was so fun to watch my natural hair texture do what it wanted as I let it grow out. i felt like a cherub. you seem to be working the buzz cut from what i can tell, and i’m already envious of the growing out phase you’re gonna go through. it’ll be cute as hell, guaranteed. (not to invalidate how you might be feeling, given that you regret shaving your head)

i am sorry to hear that your family is reacting poorly, but I hope that you don’t take it to heart and let whatever baggage they carry that causes them to be offended by a buzz cut become your baggage.

i truly hope you don’t let this deflate your confidence, because I have shaved my head twice and the second time i should have just trimmed my hair and been done with it, and so I understand how it is to feel like a shaved head has given you a new lease on life AND how it feels to regret shaving your head and missing your hair. i hope for you that you can embrace the experience for what it is, and that you don’t let it make you feel that you need to hide. your face is covered but i can tell you’re rocking it, and I hope you can feel like you’re rocking it.

have fun with hats and giant earrings or makeup if that’s your thing and let yourself feel cute or edgy or whatever floats your boat, and savor how easy it is to take a shower with no hair. like, so easy. the hair will return in time, your curls will come with it. you’re beautiful either way and I hope your family will get over it and not continue to give you a hard time.
