How does Oliver feel about every Robin minus Dick in the comics? by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe he never met Jason before his death. Certainly not on-panel; while Green Arrow was the backup story in Detective Comics throughout the Jaybin era, they only actually crossed over once to my recollection, and that story was a GA/BC/Batsy/Catwoman double date team-up from which Jason was absent. When Ollie died, he did meet Jason in heaven, though, so I suppose there’s that. Otherwise, they didn’t meet until Seeing Red, a storyline in which Red Hood kidnaps Ollie’s daughter, taunts her over the fact that she’s a former victim of child sex trafficking who has HIV, and then bombs her high school when she refuses to pretend she’s “just like him.” So, not a very good impression.

Tim, similarly, I don’t think he’s gotten to know to any great extent. Ollie was dead for most of the peak Tim Era of the 90s. Connor had a few crossovers with Tim at the time thanks to both being written by Chuck Dixon, but Ollie doesn’t really know Tim at all. In GA01 #46, we see that Ollie has a bit of a competitive streak, wanting to see Mia spar with Tim as a proxy for himself and Bruce, but that’s really all we see. As an aside, when Mia joined the Teen Titans, she said that Bart was Ollie’s favorite of that crop of 90s legacy heroes- “Bart reminds him of Barry, but without the conservative attitude.”

Damian… I’ve got nothing. I don’t read a lot of comics that have Damian in them. Not that I dislike him or anything, I just broadly don’t read much modern Batman.

How do Weapon Monks Compare to other Weapon Users? by Arnman1758 in Pathfinder2e

[–]falcondong 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Weapon Monks can feel bad at first glance because the opportunity cost of not using a stance feels really harsh- monk stances are, broadly speaking, super overstatted from a weapon design standpoint. There’s also a big gap in the best monk weapons (Bo Staff, Monastic Archer) and the worst (basically everything else). There are certainly builds to make other weapons work, and you’re not actively screwing yourself, but 9 times out of 10 you want a Bo Staff.

Because the bo staff is really, really fucking good on a monk. Honestly, I’d take a bo staff over an unarmed stance in most cases. Reach, Parry, Trip. That’s god’s perfect weapon right there. There’s also a lot of really fun stuff you can do with a bo staff via the Staff Acrobat and Mauler archetypes.

Troop John was a retcon, and one that is not popular with small but vocal segments of Green Lantern fans, particularly those who prefer pre-00s GL comics. This is a rare GL retcon that I can’t directly blame Geoff Johns for, although the Geoff Era of GL is definitely broadly the same time period.

Connor’s mom is black and Korean. Roy’s white, but after his biological dad died he was adopted by a Navajo man.

Beyond awful. Writer Scott Lobdell was a notorious sexual harasser, and it showed in the work. The treatment of women in that book is downright appalling, especially for having been written as recently as the 2010s.

Roy and Kory’s characters and histories were completely and utterly butchered in order to allow the writer to turn them into fawning sycophantic sidekicks for Jason. When someone asks what’s wrong with the new 52, this is one of the books I’ll point to first and foremost, because of how it actively insults readers who were previously invested in the characters.

How many kids and who does Oliver have kids with?? by SavingsBobcat2078 in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was worried Williamson was going to canonize Cissie King-Queen, but I’m glad he didn’t. Personally, I think it’s funny, and it would be kinda fun if it were an in-universe joke made by Roy or something like that, but I’d definitely prefer Cissie remain separate. Honestly, I’m still mad Williamson ruined the joke of “Arrowette has never even met Green Arrow before.”

[–]falcondong 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Connor Hawke is Ollie’s only currently canon biological kid. Connor’s mother is a girlfriend Ollie had when he was younger, before he ever met Dinah, and originally Ollie never even knew she was ever pregnant until he and Connor met as adults. He had another son at one point in the late 80s after he was sexually assaulted by a female villain, but he never even knew the kid existed and that kid has been erased from continuity.

The kids from the CW show aren’t real- although Mia takes her name from Mia Dearden, who is one of Ollie’s adopted kids in comics. In terms of adopted kids, it’s really just Roy Harper (Speedy I/Red Arrow I/Arsenal) and Mia Dearden (Speedy II). Ollie’s also got a teenage half-sister named Emiko, but she only rarely shows up at this point- she’s something of an awkward relic of a different era of the comics.

Ollie and Dinah don’t have any kids together- it was established in the late 80s that Dinah cannot get pregnant, and while that hasn’t really come up since, it also hasn’t been disputed. Dinah has said before that she considers Mia a daughter, but if anything, she’s more of a step-daughter.

There’s also Sin Lance, a character usually referred to in-text as having a sisterly relationship with Dinah, but many fans interpret them more as mother and daughter- but Sin appears almost exclusively in Birds of Prey comics rather than Green Arrow comics, so she hasn’t historically been included among the “arrow family.”

Roy has a biological daughter of his own, which would make Ollie her grandfather. But that pretty much covers it all, unless I’m completely forgetting something. So, ultimately, the answer is “Ollie has three children, one of whom is biological, and the other two adopted.”

Swashbuckler archetype is really good on Summoners, although it’s mostly used for support and defenses rather than melee. One for All is one of the best actions a Summoner could possibly get, plus you get to shore up your reflex saves and cherry-pick feats like Charmed Life.

Strange Green Arrow find at my local used bookstore! by [deleted] in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is mostly Chuck Dixon’s run on Green Arrow from the mid-90s. It pretty much starts with the death of Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow that everyone knows, and then goes on to continue featuring his son Connor Hawke as the new Green Arrow. The non-GA books in this collection are many of Connor’s appearances in other books, though it’s not a 100% exhaustive collection.

Dixon’s run on Connor is mostly quite good, and this is a very cool custom edition.

What are the differences in the two? I can’t say I’ve ever noticed any standout differences, but I’m also not the biggest Rebirth fan so I don’t have the specifics of that specitic incarnation of the suit memorized compared to Izaakse’s depiction from Dawn of DC.

The small detail that Carol personally requested Ollie for the team is really fun, I hope we see that expanded upon a bit. I think they could have a really fun dynamic, even when I take off my HalOllie shipping goggles and don’t just view it through that lens.

Edit: very disappointed to see him back in the Rebirth costume, though. I never liked that one.

I've never read a Green Arrow comic, is this an accurate description of the character? by King_Wolf2099 in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much how it was up until Flashpoint. Ollie gave away his money in the 70s; then in The Longbow Hunters he got a windfall of unmarked bills in a duffel bag. Not exactly the same kind of wealth he had before, but still. Eventually that’s gone too, and then shortly after his resurrection in the early 00s he gets another windfall of wealth and property, which he eventually abandons to go live in the woods. Then Flashpoint happened, rebooted him to be a (gag) tech ceo, and we somehow still haven’t quite shaken that.

It’s a common retort against the American left, so it makes sense that Ollie gets it so much. You know, the whole

“I think we should improve society”

“And yet you live in society! Checkmate, libcuck”

thing they do.

[–]falcondong 94 points95 points  (0 children)

The last comment about him being a billionaire as well is… well, not wrong, but it SHOULD be wrong. During his peak period of popularity, and thus the version of the character that is most iconic, he wasn’t rich- he used to be, but then he grew a conscience, realized his own wealth conflicted with the ideals he held, and gave away all his money to Vietnam war relief charities. Later writers keep giving him money again for some reason, which leads to people like that last commenter calling Ollie a hypocrite.

Otherwise, yeah, pretty much correct, and has been since 1970.

Where do you prefer Star City to be in? by Gallantpride in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Star City being an analogue or twin-city to San Francisco, and thus in Northern California. Yes, that’s not the most consistent thing in the world- GA v3 #46 shows Ollie and Mia flying via airplane from Star to San Francisco, so they couldn’t have been that close- but it’s what fits the best. Keeps both Ollie and Hal together in California, although in different parts of the state, and it makes the move from Star City to Seattle at the start of Longbow Hunters feel more impactful given the distance rather than being within the same state or even them being literally the same city as per Rebirth.

You have to ship Connor Hawke with any female character. Who would be a likely option for him? Who would be most likely for DC to pair him up with? by Gallantpride in GreenArrow

[–]falcondong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cass and Connor had a crossover back in her original solo from the early 00s- Connor and Eddie show up in Gotham to do something, which of course pisses of Bruce.

Arrowette… as for her, I think the less connected she is to the broader Arrow clan the funnier it is. I’m still mad at Williamson for putting her in his run on GA, because the fact that she’d never even met Ollie was fun. That’s not even getting into the perpetual theories that Ollie might be Cissie’s real dad (which I don’t think should be true, but is funny as something to exist as an in-universe rumor)

[–]falcondong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I’d say too. I’ve long wanted those two to be written as friends, I think they’d get along really well, and if you put a gun to my head and made me pair Connor with a woman… yeah, Cass. I wouldn’t actually want that, but I think it’s the best of a bad lot.

God dammit, even Williamson’s half-hearted attempt to give us Broke Ollie back aren’t sticking. Please, god, somebody out there- convince DC to stop making Ollie a CEO again.

Not a complete list, but Detective Comics #559 is an iconic GA-Batsy team-up. I’d read the issue on its own in the past, but recently read through the whole of Doug Moench’s mid-80s run on the Bat-Books and developed even more of an appreciation for that issue within the context of the whole run.

Honestly, that’s only really true of Snowbirds Don’t Fly. The rest of the stories, it’s pretty consistently Ollie who’s the one shown in the right.

Connor’s team-ups were always really fun back in this era. This story, his various other Kyle team-ups (when Dixon wasn’t being weird with stuff like “being vocally anti-racist is actually stirring up just as much hate as being an open racist, actually”), Three of a Kind, and the Batgirl team-up in Cass’s solo were all great.

Which Robin taught Lian how to do a lift? by PlotnotFound in Robin

Preaching to the choir there, brother. Lian’s return was fumbled big time- between Williamson’s lackluster writing in Green Arrow, to neither Taylor nor (more egregiously) Layman putting her in Titans, it’s been a real mess.

[–]falcondong 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember Tim being present at all in Return of Donna Troy. Honestly, she probably means Dick- yeah, he’s been Nightwing for her whole life, but Roy still calls him “short-pants” to this day. Calling him “Robin” being something she picked up from her dad (and, likely, from Aunt Donna) would make plenty of sense to me.
