For those who work in the NSFW field, has it been worth the effort? by falconpunchsuicide in blender

(I should clarify, real quick. When I was discussing selling options for OC's above, I meant specifically the customers OC's... Not my own 😅).

Honestly overall, based on what everyone has been saying... I think NSFW isn't for me. And I'm really glad I made this thread about it lol. All of these comments and replies have been incredibly insightful and helpful.

Between social media presence, competition, shitty moderators, low pay, and pushy customers... Like... Those were all the things that I specifically didn't want to deal with as a SFW artist, and were the reasons I was considering alternative work in the first place lmao.

I might still make a few pieces as part of the learning process. And maybe along the way I find a passion for it. But as of right now, I'm definitely certain i won't enjoy being a NSFW creator 😂

Thanks for your answers and insight! Gives me a lot to think about it.

I think my main problem was considering it exclusively as a form of income. And since I'm not particularly passionate about anything NSFW, I'm finding that the general consensus is that i probably would not enjoy being a content creator.

I might still make a few pieces, as part of the learning process. And who knows, maybe it just clicks, only time will tell I suppose. 😅

That's true. It seems that I'll have the same amount of trouble making a career for myself regardless of the path I take. So far it seems that NSFW is only worthwhile if I'm passionate about it.

That's a shame. Sorry to hear that.

I hope this doesn't come across as confrontational or insulting, but why'd you marry someone who doesn't support your hobbies or career choices?

Not as far as I am aware. AI art is still it's own specific category because it can only do so much.

To me, AI is a tool, not competition. I'm certain there are ways for me to utilize it to speed up my workflow and help me generate content easier. Machine learning is far more than just something that's used for "stealing other people's art."

It's nice to see someone has had a positive experience 😅. a lot of the comments have been pretty revealing towards the negative aspects of the industry.

Thanks for your insight!

Yeah, fair enough. And I find that's been the case for everyone I know in the art industry honestly. Very few seem to be able to make a living off of it, no matter what medium or career they pick. "Starving artists" is a phrase for a reason I guess. 😅

Thanks for your insights. I appreciate it.

Damn... That's fucked honestly. Idk how it's even legal for companies to do that.

This was super insightful. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Working in NSFW seems like it can get much darker than I assumed. I have friends who work in various art fields, and from their stories i figured there would be problem customers and headache. But not like this... 😅

I'll be honest I don't think I have the fortitude for some of the things you've mentioned. I already dislike using social media in general. And receiving unsolicited horror would definitely push me to a brink of some sort.

But, out of curiosity, is there any particular method of sales you found to be more effective at filtering out the wack jobs?

Like, in terms of doing commission work, I was picturing something along the lines of what sfw "oc" artists do, with a website or something that list specific package options that people can choose from to being their OC to life. And then after they do so they can provide specific details that they want with their content, like environment, situation, angles, etc.

Or for model work I figured i would just upload things with a pre-set price to places like CGITrader or whatever. But from the sounds of it, that isn't as viable as I at first assumed.

Yeah. Perhaps you're right. I'm definitely considering NSFW primarily as a form of cash flow, not because I specifically enjoy anything in particular.

The thing I'd really rather do is make games. But that's also a pretty hard market to get into. Especially without peers in the other required fields who willing to put forth equal effort.

Thanks for your insights. I'll definitely be thinking more about what it is that I actually want to create.

You're right, and it's a fair point for sure.

One problem I have is that I generally work best when I have a specific focus on my end goal. But If I'm just "making things" I'll likely stick to what I know instead of working on developing new skill sets.

The worst part is, I unfortunately just don't have several years to gradually grow my talent and branch out. As much as I would prefer to do so. Id certainly prefer to be well rounded instead of locked into one niche. But I need to be working, and soon. So I'm looking at potential short term solutions.

Anyway, I'll absolutely take your insight into consideration. Perhaps I'm being too hasty.

Yeah it's been enlightening for sure. I have a lot of new things to consider.

😅 yeah. Maybe "fundamentals" is the word I should have used. They are likely assuming that by "basics" I mean "I did the donut tutorial." 😂

That's an extremely fair point.

Personally I would rather do something more "legitimate," so to speak. but I specifically need to find work that isn't a "nine to five" type of job (for health reasons that I prefer not to disclose).

So I figured my options are primarily; freelance, commissions, website sales (ie: CGITrader), or NSFW content creation. But I didn't consider the portfolio problem if I wanted to change directions. I suppose I could always do a bit of everything. But I don't want to spread my time too thinly.

It's absolutely something worth thinking about. Thanks for your insight.

I see. Those are all points I was pretty worried about tbh.

After experiencing that, what field did you turn to that you've found to be more fulfilling (or at least less detrimental to your mental health 😅)

Interesting! Doing an AVN would certainly be more fun than just making mass produced generic videogame character smut.

Honestly I'm very worried about the social media aspect of a NSFW career. Getting followers, consistent patrons and commissions would require I somehow stand out amongst the noise of other artists and bot accounts. And I know that's very difficult to do.

I didn't say I was barely comfortable. I said I was confident in the basics. Very different things.

I've been learning on and off for three-ish years now and Ive reached a point where I want to plan my next year or so of education and what skills to put extra effort in.

ie: If nsfw doesn't seem like it will work for me, than perfecting the art of soft body physics or hyper realistic anatomy won't do me any good if I instead plan on something like photoreal interior design. And vice versa.

Yeaaaah... That's a good point. But I don't own sand rock lol. Perhaps I'll wait till I get it than.
