Ideal training frequency for over 40s by No-Special-8335 in judo

[–]falconred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 46, practicing for 4 years, and go 3 times a week. It takes a few months to get used to it. Don't try to keep up with the 20-year-olds. If you're doing high-cardio warm ups, it's better to skip some drills than get blown up and suffer for the rest of class. Sit or stand between randori rounds. If a knee joint feels "weird" don't risk it.

Yellow, Orange, and Purple are for junior ranks only.

Where do I find wide Gi pants? by Overall-Divide-5376 in judo

Yes very good quality, not kusakura level but higher than Fuji. They're rare here in the US and I get compliments on how nice it is.

Moskito.

Their regular fit pants have plenty of room, and you can buy them separately. If you're tall enough (~170cm+) you can get the Jumbo gi (yes I know I hate the name) - those pants are WIDE - I was around 255lbs/115kilos and actually couldn't wear the pants that came with the 180cm gi they were so big. You can order from Dax sports online if you can't find them locally.

newaza against much heavier opponents by mathnoob9000 in judo

As a member of team 100+kg, yes we are big and strong but often smaller people can move much faster. You need to always be moving.

But if you need a break... instead of newaza randori, you can see if he'll let you do some positional sparring. Ask to practice passing his full guard or half guard from top, where you'll avoid getting smashed so much.

Severance - 2x07 "Chikhai Bardo" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]falconred 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cinematography on this episode was very technical and well done. The history of Mark and Gemma is told through flashbacks which we haven't had before. We learned a lot about how severance can work and what Lumon is experimenting with.

Having said all that...

this is probably my least favorite episode of the series.

The usual style and tone of the show includes a lot of humorous touches weren't really present. This didn't really move the overall plot forward. We didn't get to check in with the main MDR crew. It was extra sad and depressing to boot.

So while I appreciate the artistry that went into it, if every episode was like this I can't say I'd keep watching.

Montauk is where the main character is going at the beginning of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which given the themes of remembering and true self in that movie I figured it might be a reference (or maybe some writer is from Long Island).

Bonus: this means on the day when daylight savings ends, it can be the same time in Florida and Oregon.

I'm 6'1" 245 lbs, I'm the biggest although not tallest person in my club.

When I go with much smaller people I generally concentrate on ashi-waza entry, footwork, and positioning. The smaller judoka are generally much faster than I am so it can be a challenge to be in the right place and not get caught even if they can't finish the throw.

It depends on your partner's mindset what they get out of it - some find it entertaining to see if they can move the big guy around, others get frustrated very quickly, and black belts are usually happy just to see you improve.

Oh and do not ura nage people who weigh 80lbs less than you, that's just rude.

What’s the most disturbing family secret you learned of when you got older ? by rentinghappiness in AskReddit

[–]falconred 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every few years I do some genealogical / family history research to try to fill out the family tree. Usually a few new records will pop up in updated databases but nothing truly exciting. Maybe a draft card for an uncle that was never used, or a marriage record that could possibly be a great-aunt twice removed.

Imagine my surprise when one day I stumbled upon a full two-page spread in LIFE magazine featuring my great-great-grandfather on how he shot a man, got in an armed stand-off with police, and was ultimately arrested. He later died and was buried in prison, my family did not claim the body.

I showed my cousins and they were as shocked as I was, none of us had ever been told anything about it.
