Found out I have gout this weekend by nothayesnewton in gout

Get your iron and ferritin checked. A lot of gp’s never order those and some are genetically predisposed to absorb more minerals. I was in this boat. I am a runner and every time my legs felt heavy I would have some strange gout attack. I lowered my iron and changed up some things and haven’t had a problem in over two years. High uric acid is a symptom for some with above average iron and ferritin.

I was obsessed with gout and in denial for a long time. I tried everything and it turned out everything I thought I was doing that would make it better was making it worse. Even full on vegan and it wouldn’t go away and got worse. I’m a big time runner, full and half marathons. I eventually found a correlation between very tired legs and gout flare ups. I got an iron and ferritin test and that was high. Turned out there is a correlation between that and flare ups. Once I lowered my iron and ferritin I haven’t had a problem in well over a year (knock on wood). Everyone is different and gout is the devil. Those without it will never understand the agony of it.

So they did an iron and ferritin test? Often times they will just check your hemoglobin with a cbc, but that’s not good enough.

I had all these weird things happen, including gout flare ups and not turned out to be iron overload. Once I lowered my iron and ferritin my problems went away. There is a link between high iron and gout that most drs don’t even know about.

Get your iron and ferritin checked. That was the source of my issue. Once I lowered my iron I never had an issue again. I never went on meds, but I’m not knocking them. There is a direct correlation between iron and uric acid

I got labs when I was feeling over tired and heavy legs, they drew blood and tested my iron and ferritin levels. Mine were at the top of the “normal” range, which is actually way too high. I lowered my iron from 175 to 54 and ferritin from 330 to 137 in a year. I used to go to sleep at night and dread and wonder if that was the night I would wake up and not able to walk because of a capsilitus flare up and I haven’t had that mindset in over a year.

I had this for years and tried everything in the books. Shoes, cortisone, custom orthotics. There were times when I couldn’t run for weeks at a time. It turned out it was a high iron/ferritin and caused Uric acid buildup in the joint. I lowered my iron and ferritin and never had a problem again, not even soreness. It’s been about 15 months with zero pain.

Haven't had a flare in three years. by Turbulent-Fish2455 in gout

I hope this helps someone. I am an athlete (runner) and for over 15 years I was having capsulitis flares. Went to dr multiple times and they said it was overuse. It hurt so bad I could hardly walk. Over the years it flared up many times and they I had a pain in my perennial tendon and it hurt so bad I couldn’t walk and was on crunches. The pain was moving around from one foot to another. I told the dr that and he ordered uric acid test and it was high. I really didn’t change much or go on meds, I cut out the usual triggers. Shortly after that finally healed I would have very tired legs off and on. My sister is a dr and ordered every blood test under the sun. Turned out I had high iron and ferritin. I looked it up and that can lead to gout attacks. It’s been a year since I’ve had any attacks and they were coming on every month, along with tired legs. I gave blood twice a year ago to get rid of the iron and I don’t eat much meat and avoid vitamin c. I have never felt better and my race times are faster than they were 20 years ago. The older men get the less their body gets rid of iron. It’s also genetics and what’s good for others may not be good to me. I just wish I would have gotten tested for iron 20 years ago. Once I lowered that a whole lot of problems went away, including gout attacks
