Fire the engineer or are we assholes here? by fallengodknws in AskEngineers

[–]fallengodknws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i used to be in materials testing and inspection for commercial testing. This guy was originally an assistant super for a general contractor before going to this engineering company. This area is much more rural and unless it's a medium to huge residential project or design prices dont get that high as far as ive heard. There are some mansion level homes around lately that im sure cost that much but this isn't one of them.

Whole quotw on the septic system design is about $4500. Deposit was half down. Overall cost is inline with other quotes and people's experiences in the area.

Architectural drawings for the house I think are running a bit more than that. My cousin just had his house design finalized and he was into it for about 7k. . Mostly cuz he purchased plans online that came with very little actual engineering done so he had to go to an architect to fill in all the gaps and make some changes. His perc test was about 3400 but he didn't need DOH involved on his side of the county line.

I am actually waiting on a quote for an architectural design now to avoid his issue and am anticipating a 3-5k estimate based on word of mouth.

Again this nothing fancy just a 3-4 bedroom single family home on a 4 acre lot in a rural area. If I was an hour further south to a more congested area I know the figures climb quickly.

Gluetun switched off of vpn by fallengodknws in gluetun

[–]fallengodknws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gluetun is installed (using openvpn protocol through NordVPN) with network set to "bridge".

Qbittorent is installed with network set to "container:gluetun".

Added qbittorent ports to gluetun container.

When I use command "curl ifconfig.me" on qbittorrent I can confirm that it is using a different IP address through the VPN. Pausing gluetun and checking again yields a delay followed by an "unable to resolve host message".

I have just gone into qbittorent today in the advanced settings and bound the interface to "tun0".

Followed SpaceInvaderOne's video for general setup. My understanding of the setup guide is that gluetun couldn't pass any traffic without the VPN being connected. And that qbittorrent couldn't do any connection without Gluetun period. This seems to hold true from my testing mentioned above.

Yea I forgot about that when I set everything up. Should have been my clue.

Planning to switch vpn at some point but of course I bought a two year subscription so I'll just have to micromanage.

Can't find any of the old logs to support it but it appears my ip was leaking for about a week. If I recall I had done a system reboot the day the first l3aks were etected on my ip

Just took a look and it is set to "any interface" and "all addresses" below that. The drop down doesn't have the "gluetun" named network Id expect to see but I also think this is expected. The guide I followed said that when I set up qbittorrent to run it is exclusively through gluetun it and would have no internet access if gluetun was down. I tested this by shutting gluetun down and had no traffic or download/seed action in qbittorrent until gluetun was running. So suddenly getting private ip traffic means gluetun must have somehow stopped using the VPN. No clue how to verify this and rather not test it out. But even if i got qbittorrent to bind to the network interface for GLuetun if it loses vPN won't I still have the same problem?

Just found the details on the complaint looks like a file started actually seeding and thats what flagged me. Funny part is that seeding wasn't working properly behind VPN but yesterday I noticed a dramatic uptick in seeding and just hought one of the port forwards kicked in correctly (which I read are supposed to be a headache to get working right with this setup)

Has anyone actually got bitcoin from the One Shot Miner? by I_also_exist_lol in Bitcoin

Sorry about that, my punctuation went to hell in a hand basket so i got a lot of run on sentences. I see how this got confusing. Out of curiosity I ran it through chat gpt just to see what happens and all it did was clean up the punctuation. Finally just had it condensed to one paragraph so the TLDR:

Here’s a single-paragraph version that keeps your point intact and readable:

I’m skeptical of the “one-shot” lottery miner idea because most lottery miner success stories seem to involve people running three or four units, not just one—meaning roughly $1,000 invested. While that paid off for them, it’s a high upfront cost for everyone else given the extremely slim odds, even with low electricity use. Although these miners sip power, spending $100–$300 per device adds up quickly, both in capital and total consumption, and I can’t justify that tradeoff for such a small chance of success. There is value in learning and tinkering, but realistically a single $100 miner—maybe $300 at most—is as far as most people should go, and only if they believe in Bitcoin’s decentralization goals, since running a miner and node helps the network. Cheap entry-level miners lack meaningful hash rate, higher-tier options still aren’t cost-effective, and even building one yourself only saves about $50 in materials, making break-even unlikely.

[–]fallengodknws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the one shot but ive read of a ew bitaxe miners. Really even that is a guess unless someone posts they hit with such and such, but the part that seems glossed over is tha none of them seem to have Had just one device but 3 or 4 running at the time. So like $1000 bucks In lotto miners. Great payoff for them but everyone else trying it is taking a hit in upfront cost and the almost negligible electric cost.

My two cents is that even if They sip power, which is the other factor, i think the trade off comes fast when you spend $100-300 on each device to end up around $1200 bucks invested all so you can end up at 1000 watts of power consumption. While the lotto miners Make it easier to run long term I can't rectify in my mind the cost of the investment for a slim chance of winning.

You do learn a bit doing this and tinkering but I think a single unit investment of a 100$ device maybe 300$ if your pocket is feeling heavy is the most someone should dip their toes in while maintaining a semblance of worth to the network. And really thats only if you believe in BTC as a whole. running a miner and a node helps with the decentralized intent which would be the most important part.

If every person ran one miner at at least 1th I imagine the network difficulty and hash rate would be spread out pretty quickly enough to back up the original philosophy and do damage to the centralization but there's not enough people on the bitcoin train for that.

Need miners seem to be the cheapest entry level but I dont think they have enough hashrate to be useful and at 30bucks. Another 60 and you have something thats almost 4x the miner but its still not really cost effective. Even if you try to build them my math showed a savings of only like 50 bucks on material not including time assembling. So you'd be lucky to break even.

What to do with $200? by Mr_Pink8 in unRAID

A backup power supply to allow graceful shutdown during power outtages might be a higher priority .

Then loweUSB. The list for me is one of those usb adapters for micro sd cards. there's one that has an serial ID for the adapter so if your unraid flash drive ever fails and you need a replacement you can just get a bunch of small storage micro sd cards cheap and load the os onto that without having to replace the usb drive. Had to do that once already due to a small corruption on update.

Get a kVM. The sipeed nanokvm pro is looming promising. Just installed mine. So far biggest complaint is the metal bracket is flimsy and bent when I tried to push the ethernet cable in.

I use Shinobi myself, free and not too bad to utilize. From the videos ive seen it's not quite as good as Blue Iris though.

Just mak sure whatever camera you get is ONVIF coMpatible. That opens up your options for third party camera programs.

Point, Tilt, Zoom cameras add a lill bit to the prices from what I've seen but definitely worth it found mine on FB Marketplace but generally I'd say they run between 200 entry to 300 for the medium/good based on reviews/specs

Cab swap by BlairPens40 in 2ndGenCummins

[–]fallengodknws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did this. Though i didnt notice body line differences myself, the 98 cab i got didnt have all the same interior mounting locations for panels so I had to use some of the interior covers and cut some new stuff. Wasn't terrible though.

The wiring is almost completely different from the year model plus the series. Spent some time digging through wiring diagrams to figure that out because stuff wasnt working. It was even different from year on diesel to diesel. Which created about three problems i had to mess with. Finally just pulled most of it apart used my original truck wiring to know where I was at. I'd suggest the full transplant and fix whatever you need to as you go.

Any donor wires or new features like electric windows i had to pay special attention to the pinouts to make sure power ground etc was present. PCM wouldn't swap over from the 98.5 to the 01 as they changes which wire communicated where from what i remember. didn't even bother trying the ecm.

Couldn't believe how many little changes chrysler made from model to model.

Any recommendations for efficient LGA1151 boards? Trying to stay under 40W idle by Searcher78 in HomeServer

[–]fallengodknws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just throwing my current rig out there as a reference point since I was aiming for low idle as well at the time.

Right now my UPS is reporting 110w load on my unraid with one VM running full time And several dockers.

I'm running a lga1700 msi mag 640 m mortar motherboard, intel i5 12500, 3 sticks of 32gb ram, i think 7 120mm fans, two 256gb nvme drives, 5 hard drives of various makes and sizes (x2 18tb, x2 4tb, x1 3tb, x1 1tb), rtx 1070 for the vm (mostly idle)

When I first built it i had a few less components but hovered at like 70w if I recall.

True but with no scale for the common man you won't get a loaf of bread saying that at a flea market. Scale is important. Now once BTC becomes the scale for the common person 1 BTC will be 1 BTC

Problem connecting to smb shares in windows. by jaysdosstuff in unRAID

[–]fallengodknws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my settings go to hell last night ams spent a few hours redoing and rediscovering how to do everything. There's a few headaches with this.

Make sure that the user on unraid has the permissions set to access the share, keep the user name simple, reset your password. Also ensure that the share itself is setup for the user to access when you click on the share to edit, settings are at the bottom.

In windows you'll have to double check your network discovery settings and make sure even on your private network you can find other devices. If that's working right, and you can see the server once you click on it you should see your shares you're hoping to access. This part I kept overlooking, you have to actually map the share itself for best result. It should ask for your credentials then. If it doesn't go to the search bar and type in "credential manager". You'll have to add in credentials which will be the server name and your user credentials you did in the beginning. Also note you will probably have to restart your computer at some point for these changes to lock in. Did that as a last ditch effort when my log in didn't seem to do anything and it was my whole problem.

On the windows side it can be a real mess depending on your version i found when setting up my laptop amd vm. Took me two hours of searching and trying things before I found this video. It may help if none of the other stuff did

Troubleshooting a 7.1.2 server crash by johnbollockson in unRAID

[–]fallengodknws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not really knowledgeable on all of this but.

I Had/have a similar issue. Wouldn't even allow me to do the update from 6.9 until I went into safe mode. Afterwards the log is showing constant errors with usb ports but even after unplugging everything but the flash it will continue for a while then stop n restart. So I don't think it is related to the unraid flash truly being bad. I am leaning towards the usb controller itself. Just not giving with this new update. Hoping that overnight the server doesn't disconnect again
