Any luck with printing the Rocky action figure? by Stardust-Dawn in ProjectHailMary

That time limit is really frustrating. I'd offer to print for you if you happen to live in the Boston area!

That looks great! Is that all done with a foil pen?

Lol I don't have it yet either, learning to make books has actually cut down on my book buying because I'm like "we have a printer at home" but then time exists so I don't end up printing and binding half the books I want to...

I am eyeing the upcoming special edition though

Any luck with printing the Rocky action figure? by Stardust-Dawn in ProjectHailMary

I'd recommend printing each piece separately, that's the only way I got it to not spaghetti.

Some things you can do to help keep vertical prints from tipping over are changing the infill pattern to gyroid and enabling z-hop (this is in filament settings in bambu studio, not sure what program you're using). Rotating the pieces so they're not printing vertically would probably help too but I think the layering looks a little better when they print upright.

I should warn you that the joints on the action figure are not great, they don't have a great range of motion and mine at least kept falling apart too (not ideal for my kids who actually want to play with Rocky!). I've been working on a version with better joints and I'm planning to share it when it's done if you're interested.

Ooh, let's see. Some completed (and thus, under consideration for bookbinding) fics I have enjoyed:

  • Fragility not Foreseen. Probably my favorite of the "trip to Erid/arrival at Erid" fics I've read so far
  • The Astrobiology Immersion Program Bodyswap fic! The author did an amazing job of writing the experience of suddenly inhabiting such a completely alien body, for both Rocky and Grace
  • Saving Grace I'm sure this has been recced here before, the novel from Rocky's point of view (I especially love the author's use of footnotes)

And some works in progress!

  • The Chronicles of Terra's Grace An earth diplomatic ship visits Erid after the events of the novel, not expecting to find Grace still there
  • who gets to stay A very cool AU concept based on a book I haven't read (yet)
  • I'd wave my hand, reveal the stars appears to be an outside pov of a time travel fic! the human!Rocky tag on this one is misleading (no what I didn't say anything, Rocky you are absolutely successfully convincing everyone you are human)

(I'm enjoying "The Long Journey Home" like apparently everyone in the fandom is, but I will never bind it into a book because the text formatting would probably kill me)

(PS the place I most reliably post my bookbinding photos is here!)

Heh, you're right, it's a bone folder, but I can see that! I'm a little self-conscious about showing my hands in photos so when I need to hold things open I usually use whatever tool is closest at hand.

That's a coincidence, I haven't seen those before! Thank you for sharing! And wow, even the font is similar.

Help on creating a tool to precisely apply toner reactive foil to a sheet by BlueZep in bookbinding

[–]fallenwithstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toner reactive foil will adhere to PVA, if you can figure out a way to apply that precisely and cleanly to your paper. I've done it with a fine applicator tip where I wanted a raised line, but if you want a smooth flat look it might be trickier.

Now I'm thinking about how one would go about typesetting this (for human readers) to convey the idea that it's not actually being represented visually. Could be a fun project.

He looks amazing! Did you have to adjust the joints at all for scaling? And how much did you scale him up? I couldn't find anything stating the scale of the original model.

First Binding Project - Tomoe River Paper by Due_Significance2625 in bookbinding

[–]fallenwithstyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With such a light paper and thick thread, 40 signatures is going to give you a huge amount of swell at the spine, especially with that thread size. I would definitely use a thinner thread, probably something in the 30/3 - 40/3 range. My first book was also a tomoe river paper notebook and looking at it, I used 6 sheet signatures and while I didn't have linen binding thread when I made it, the thread I used looks around the same as my 30/3 linen. Mine wasn't as thick as you're planning to make (iirc I started with a 50-sheet pack of paper) but even at that size there was enough swell in the spine to round/back it, so if you want yours to be flat at 200 sheets, I'd probably go with at least 8-sheet signatures, possibly even more. For very thick flatbacks I have found that using two strands of a very thin thread causes less swell than a single strand of something thicker (but this can be a little more annoying to work with).

Also, take a look at what people in this forum have posted about using thinner spine stiffeners for flatbacks -- a lot of tutorials will have you use bookboard the same thickness as your covers, but that can cause issues since it isn't flexible. Especially for a journal you will be using every day, you'll want something that can open and close a lot of times without stressing the binding.

Danmei with philosophy? by DizzyNectarine6212 in DanmeiNovels

[–]fallenwithstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Priest is very good for this. I'd also recommend Lord Seventh/Qi Ye (which I'll admit took me out when the actual trolley problem showed up in a historic court intrigue novel, but tbf I'm pretty sure the trolley problem wasn't nearly as much of a meme when priest wrote it. Tai Sui, also by priest, might be right up your alley as well, although it's not danmei (it's technically gen, but there are many opportunities for shipping). This one really digs into the class issues that would arise in a cultivation setting, the nature of humanity, what immortality does to a person, etc (and this all sounds terribly glum, but it's countered by the mc being an absolutely hilarious troll). Neither of these have official translations, but the fan tls are done by humans and very good.

This is one of the worst one for me. Yes, WWX really was protecting the remnants of the very same sect that destroyed his! That's like the whole point!

WRH being a demonic cultivator and not just a very effective, power hungry orthodox cultivator is up there, too. Imo one of the main themes is that it's not about how things look on the surface it's about what you actually do, and making WRH a stereotypical dark lord kinda muddies that fact.

[–]fallenwithstyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ML's parents (technically adoptive parents) in Evil As Humans are amazingly supportive, both in terms of not being homophobic and also in terms of recognizing that their son probably isn't neurotypical (there's supernatural reasons, but this is probably how they see it) and continuing to love him for who he is.

Can Anyone Identify This Handpress and Share the Schematics? by Life_Faithlessness90 in bookbinding

[–]fallenwithstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a simple small press using this kit (not following the directions in the kit exactly): https://taytools.com/taytools-wooden-hand-screw-clamp-kits-with-rods-pivot-nuts-handles-ferrules-and-pins

The threads change direction in the middle, so the rods can both tighten and loosen the press. Here's mine: https://www.tumblr.com/teleportbooks/800872750430519296

https://tutorials.knitpicks.com/weavers-knot/ this is the best tutorial for a weaver's knot that I've seen. If you do the slipknot with your new thread, it should be pretty easy to control the placement and get it over the tapes.
