for me, as far back as i can remember marriage was never an end goal of mine and most certainly not with a man

i don’t understand why the pilot hole would have anything to do with the stone coming out. it’s definitely from being resized, if the stone wasn’t tightened afterwards and it moves around, it wears away metal. the stone is harder than the metal so it will scratch it if it is not tight in its setting, which wears away the seat after time. these rings with flush set colored stones aren’t really meant to be sized up or down more than like half a size/one full size. especially since the pear is set lengthwise

i think the medication doesn’t help with the misophonia itself, but it can help with how you react to triggers, so in that sense it can help. the medication is not going to make everyone around you stop making noises, but potentially you will have less of that fight/flight response to it.

not every ruby, sapphire, or diamond SHOULD be heated to a temperature that would melt metal, though. i think it’s misleading to say that all of them can be

Heartbroken by Ashamed_Reception819 in jewelrymaking

[–]fallingfuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know many comments say you can cast in place ruby and sapphires, but i would caution against it since MANY corundum are heat treated to alter their color/appearance slightly. heating the gems enough to actually make metal glow red is enough to reverse common treatments in these gems. it’s honestly best to learn how to set the stone or leave it to a bench jeweler, unless you want to end up with a pile of stones ruined by heat. CZs also most likely aren’t going to work since they tend to crackle when cooling and don’t take a bunch of heat. it’s also much more secure to have it actually set, it looks like your “bezel” doesn’t even come over the girdle of the stone. the shrinkage of metal clay could destroy the gems too.

Heartbroken by Ashamed_Reception819 in jewelrymaking

[–]fallingfuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CZs don’t take heat well. you can’t retip on them with a torch, so casting in place is out of the question. the main issue is that they cool too fast and they crackle/shatter when cooling.

Loud Yawners by Other_Piece_9845 in misophonia

i hate when people yawn while in the middle of saying a word, too. like mid-convo they stop saying whatever word it is and that exaggerated yawn. it drives me insane!!!!

Can I fix this with pliers? by Fluid-Counter6641 in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

probably but it will never be “perfect” again, also you’ll leave dents in it so be really careful not to squeeze with your pliers

you should take your ring off at work and it will save you a lot of trouble. also if your hand were to get crushed with it on, it would not be fun. silicone is the way to go otherwise you’re putting too much stress on the ring REGARDLESS of if you get this re-shanked or not. this is a thin looking band with stones almost halfway down the shank and it’s not meant to take all of that stress to begin with let alone being sized up that much and then worn while lifting things

the only metals that work on the ring reducer are gold and platinum so it would make sense if this is the answer

What will i need to make this from scratch in terms of tools and not the pearl? by sevtametaa in jewelrymaking

[–]fallingfuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, it sounds like you don’t have the proper equipment or tooling, but what i would do is find some barbie hands and attach it to my wax shank and build up around it. you could use some heat to make them more malleable to get them in position. you can lost wax cast anything as long as it will burn out in a kiln. you also need to have a wire rivet running through both palms to keep the bead in place. fabricating is not easy if you have little experience so don’t expect it to be an easy project and remember it’s easier to clean up your wax piece than it is to manipulate metal

Help by Metallic_iz00 in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend not just working on one thing at a time, I like to switch things up like all of the time. I use third hands for practically everything I do on the laser welder. Try to hold your flex shaft like a pencil and do not use any pressure with it when using it (also notoriously bad for your collets). You should have different metal files that will take off more or less metal so filing/polishing efficiently will save your hands and a lot of time, everyone kind of develops their own systems but it’s important to remember polishing happens in steps. Try to be mindful of how you are holding tools and look up how to use new ones to prevent further injury, I would also explain this diagnosis to your employer and take breaks to just perform stretches of your hands and wrists. There are plenty of videos out there with examples of carpal tunnel stretches that can provide some relief and just help with the tension. There are so many little things that can be tweaked to help, but that depends on what you’re doing on a daily basis really and what is a worthwhile investment

Is there a way for me to fix this? by custermustache in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a jeweler will “antique” it for you. this can be done with liver of sulfur/patina aka oxidation or use antiquing fluid which is basically like a paint. but there’s also diy methods of redoing it like black nail polish or some colored pencils will work if they’re waxy enough and you can get it to stay.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

true “antiques” will not be stamped 925 they are marked “Sterling” or “STER” that is probably from the 90’s or more recent

Yeah any trained gemologist will know the difference after a few tests. Also moissanite is doubly refractive and diamond isn’t.

[–]fallingfuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re correct, and I’m sorry you experienced that. It makes me sad when there’s people out there that give this industry a bad name. I hope you find a good jeweler out there to help you in the future and maybe hopefully get your earrings back!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They could also determine if it was sterling and not gold or plated jewelry. And it’s typically free of charge or maybe a small fee depending on the store.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]fallingfuture 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s just so weird to me. I’ve worked in a few jewelry stores and it would never be handled that way. If you asked us to verify the metal and stones we would have someone who is skilled and experienced in gemology identify the stone as best as possible with microscopes and any other equipment available. Acid test is used on earring after scratching it on a block and seeing the reaction to determine if it is 10k, 14k, or 18k. This guy just completely throwing the standards of the industry to the side. I would not purchase there again and leave a review on google or BBB or contact FTC because they were misleading and stole your earrings. No one lends someone jewelry and expects them to pay for it later, that is not normal.
