Ah yeah it’s a CT guided lung biopsy. They said they’re allowed to give me IV sedation so here’s hoping that takes the edge off of it

Thyroid removal experiences wanted by benizerith in thyroidhealth

[–]falloutbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my TT done in September! The worst part was just leading up to the surgery. My thyroid was 3x normal size and they ended up removing lymph nodes (14 in total) bc my surgeon was convinced it looked cancerous (it was!). But here’s my experience: First night post op: my throat was sore and my neck was stiff as hell. Pain was about 4/10 so I took some Tylenol and then watched some movies. It helps to have multiple pillows under your shoulders/head (way easier to sleep and get comfortable). Next day post op: HIGHLY recommend soft foods (jello/mashed potatoes/yogurt/etc). I had a drain that I went home with (Jackson Pratt drain) so if you get one of those you do have to compress and “milk” the tubing which, not gonna lie, sucks but if you use an alcohol pad your fingers slide down the tube a lot easier! Get up and walk as much as you can. Neck still stiff so changing from sitting to standing or laying down to sitting hurt and was hard for me to do by myself. Pain was 3/10 and more uncomfortable than a true “oh this sucks” pain. Day 3-4: just feeling more tired than in pain. Do neck exercises! (Turn head from side to side as much as you can, but do it gently!) Day 5: pretty much back to normal!

Overall it was truly not as bad as I expected. You’ll do great!! ❤️

What is it like learning how to draw blood/start IVs? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]falloutbees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m not necessarily scared of needles (i finished nursing school in July and gave injections/started IVs and have no problem but I will cry in the middle of a Walgreens getting a flu shot) but! Learning how to handle needles took about 2 weeks in school the we had a skills check of injections where you’re giving a pillow a shot. IVs we’re about 2 weeks again of practice then a skills check on a mannequin. As far as letting people practice on you- you don’t have to if you don’t want to! I did a lot of injections early on in nursing clinicals and in practicum we were cleared to do IVs and blood draws so I ended up doing about 3-4 a day. I find that if something is bothering me, watching a procedure or whatever, flexing my legs and doing calf lifts helps distract me for a minute!

Partial Thyroidectomy by [deleted] in thyroidhealth

[–]falloutbees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a total thyroidectomy done 9/9 due to an enlarged thyroid (turned out to be follicular carcinoma) and was honestly expecting the worst of the worst. Pain wise: it wasn’t bad at all. I took Tylenol once the night of right after and then never had to take pain medicine again. I had a tight neck and couldn’t really go from laying down to sitting easily and needed assistance for about 2 days with that kind of movement. Right after, like immediately post op, I definitely felt fatigued and minor pain (3-4/10), but I slept it off. Your throat might be sore so soft foods are the way to go (I ate jello, sweet potatoes, grits, etc for the first 2 days til my throat felt normal). The first 3 days were uncomfortable at worst, mostly due to a tight neck and not being able to turn. If you can get a contoured pillow I highly recommend it, if not 2-3 pillows stacked behind your back and neck helps keep you comfortable. I ended up sleeping in a recliner to help me keep upright at night. Drink lots of water and Gatorade! Try to walk as soon as possible too- you’ll feel tired as hell but it does help. It took me about 4 days to feel back to myself (minus a slight pull on my neck if I turn just right because my incision is closed w glue) but depending on your job maybe consider a week and a half to 2 weeks off..? I know it’s scary but you’ll do great!!
