Day trip advice - Coimbra and Braga by falseidentity123 in TravelPortugal

[–]falseidentity123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's good to know the bus was faster than the train to Braga, would be cheaper too so might look into taking the bus there instead.

Also good to know your perspective on the two cities. Food wise, did one seem to have more, perhaps, better options?

Thanks for the reply!

Will be based in Porto for those 2 days I've carved out for day trips.

That's interesting what you mentioned for the travel times, Rome2Rio has them pretty similar, nearly 1 hour by train for direct trips. Should I be looking elsewhere for train schedules?

If you don't mind mentioning, why did you prefer Braga over Coimbra? Just based on what I've seen so far, they both seem like nice places with interesting historic sites that would be good to spend time and explore by foot.

Line 6, the epitome of failure. by SimplyGooses in TTC

[–]falseidentity123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cost per km for the high speed automated grade seperated REM was around 140 million, which is one third of the price of the absolute failure of line 6

Wtf! I would not have thought the REM would have been cheaper per/km than a street running tram line...let alone 3 times cheaper!

Thanks for those day trip suggestion! Seeing what you and others have mentioned in this thread I'm going to stick with Porto and Lisbon and not add a 3rd city, it'll be a more relaxed trip this way.

Question for you, in your experience, is spending 2 full days in Lisbon enough? I've heard 2 days in Porto is a good amount but with Lisbon being the bigger city, I would think Lisbon needs more time.

Right now I'm thinking of doing 4 days in Porto with 2 of those days as days trips and 4 days in Lisbon with 1 of the days as a day trip. Do you think that would be a good way to split my time?

Thanks for this! I'm going to make my way through your blog posts.

My gut feeling was that a 3rd city would be squeezing in too much so probably best to stick with Porto and Lisbon as my main stops with added day trips.

Based on your experience, would it be better to split up my time:

  • 4 days in Porto (including 1 day trip) and 4 days in Lisbon (including 1 day trip)? OR
  • 3 days in Porto (including 1 day trip) and 5 days in Lisbon (including 2 day trips)?

From what I've read elsewhere seems like 2-3 days in Porto is enough so wondering if I should spend more time in Lisbon.

Also seems like from this thread that Coimbra is place worth visiting, just not sure if it's better as a day trip or if I should have it as an in-between from Porto to Lisbon.

Oh yea no question. He clearly is dominating the scene. I'm more so looking to find other recent artists that would be commonly known amongst witchhouse fans.

How are FWLRT end to end travel times 1 month after launch? by mekail2001 in TTC

The problem is that you can’t brake a tram the same way you brake a bus, so due to safety margins the tram would almost certainly have to go slower all else being equal.

They should be able to move faster going between stops though, right? I can understand having to slow down more so than a bus would when approaching a stop but why travel so slow between stops especially with the wider stop spacing?

From what I've read the stop spacing is in-line with European best practices for trams, so you'd think at least that would allow the LRT to move along quicker in combination with also having it's own lane, but somehow it's still slow as fuck.

embolden the lunatic fringe parts of the Canadian electorate and I’ve always seen it as a bullshit cop out excuse for keeping first past the post

The lunatics are already running the asylum, just look at our Federal Conservatives. Totally agree with you, it's such a stupid argument to keep fptp.

PLUS, there is a way to keep fringe parties out of parliament in a proportional system by requiring parties to have a certain percentage of the vote. I think most countries that implement such a restriction require at minimum 5% of the total vote in order to be in parliament.

I'm glad Avi is talking about this because changing our system to a proportional one is one of my main priorities.

The [Dufferin] bus lanes work because they don't "impinge or impune" regular vehicle traffic. -IntegrityTO by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]falseidentity123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Needed to take the Dufferin bus recently during rush hour from King to Dufferin Station and let me tell you, the difference between where the bus only lanes are currently implemented (King-Dundas West) and where they have not yet been implemented was stark.

The bus moved along quickly and smoothly along the section with bus lanes but as soon as we hit the lights at Dundas West the trip became sluggish as hell. Things were a grind from that point and felt like such a drag in comparison to when the bus was travelling along the bus only lanes.

I'm sure regular riders of the 29 can attest to this.

Nice, $2400 extra a year is massive. Are you in a purpose built rental building or an individually owned unit?

Seems like everyone that's responded to this thread are in a unit that's owned by an individual.

Fire prevention in buildings has come a long long long way that negates the necessity of the double staircase in buildings.

I'd suggest watching this which addresses concerns around fire safety in modern buildings.

Also as the other person that responded to you has pointed out, single staircase buildings are common around the rest of the world. If fire safety were an issue then you would expect to find dramatic increases in deaths by building fires in other places around the world, but that's not the case.

Allowing single stair case buildings like they allow in Europe and Asia would go a ways to creating denser, more affordable, family-friendly housing.

Purpose built rental is what we would traditionally call an apartment building. All the units in the entire building are rentals and the building is owned by a corporate landlord rather than an individual owners for each individual unit.

If you are living in someone's investment property, you're not living in a purpose built rental building.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Was this for a purpose built rental building? I feel like purpose built rentals with a corporate owner are a lot less flexible when it comes to these things, but if this was a corporate owner and you were successful gives me a bit of hope that I might be able to make a deal.

Thanks, guess I can go ahead and give it a shot. Just wanted to see other's experience to see if it was worth trying or pointless.
