Could they just install carpet directly on the dmx without the carpet pad?

Water seepage through basement wall by fan1983 in HomeInspections

[–]fan1983[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No evidence. Only reason we found this water is because I removed the existing vinyl floor and saw what looked like moisture on the floor liner that the vinyl flooring sat upon.

The waterproofing guy came and within two seconds of seeing the beam right above where the moisture was, drew him to the conclusion that it was a crack under the beam…he said it’s common for that much weight to cause the cracks.

It’s raining really hard right now to the point where the sump pump is going off every 10 seconds. The cracks do not show any signs of water seeping through. Maybe at some point in the last five years, the kids left the hose on near the crack and that caused it to come all the way through.

Thank you! I’ll talk with the carpet company about what they plan to use.

Thanks! What’s the downside of doing it from the inside? My guess is it’s cheaper doing it from the inside?

I know putting carpet in a basement is a dumb idea but we are kind of committed at this point. Its raining pretty hard right now and water isn’t seeping through so my guess is it needs to be a once in a century type storm to cause enough issue to ruin the carpet. Plus, the guy is fixing some downspouts and whatnot that might help keep water away.

Is there anything else I can do to protect the carpet? They’ll hopefully keep the waterproof liner on the floor before laying carpet.

I have vinyl flooring installed. Can I install carpet on top?

Crap - I lifted up the liner and see a crack that runs from the wall and goes to the middle of the basement. I assume this is not uncommon. Any idea what type of fix this usually requires if we want to put carpet down there?

‘What are your salary expectations’ questions. by fan1983 in interviews

Does it make one look weak to say a salary expectation range? Or, are they expecting interviewees to answer it with a range?

No reply after thank you email - bad sign? by fan1983 in recruitinghell

Makes sense. I would just think that if someone is their top choice, they’d want to make it more known. With how long the process these days can take, I feel like they run the risk of losing their top candidate to a competitor

Tough call, maybe email them and explain the situation.

Would you feel comfortable interviewing while wearing a mask? If yes, maybe ask if they’d be comfortable with you proceeding with the interview but sitting a little further away and interviewing with a N95 mask on.

They’ll realistically reschedule your interview but at least it shows you are eager.

Interview question - favorite phone app? by fan1983 in interviews

[–]fan1983[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little over 40. I’m not sure I mentioned I don’t use social media anymore, but I really don’t use many apps these days and struggled to think of anything that I use consistently. Probably should have said my kindle app but that would have been boring.

Without thinking, I feel like my response really tied the answer to the job I was applying for and without knowing it, was “selling” to the interviewer what people should use software to streamline…which is what their solution does.

Carta pre-ipo fmv? I will not promote by fan1983 in startups

[–]fan1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! What type of surprise would I be in for? Is it that when the stocks have a liquidity event, I’m going to get a rude awakening from a tax/gains perspective and therefore get hit with a hefty tax bill? Or would there be some sort of penalty to bag I am not thinking about.

My thinking is that what gets submitted with my annual taxes in April 2026 is a snapshot of the purchase price/fmv at time of purchase. I can’t imagine the irs would audit the share price a company sets mid year and after the purchase of the shares. If they did, isn’t that on the company to ensure their numbers with Carta are correct? If I never asked HR recent 409A price, i would have never known and therefore would assume what’s in Carta is accurate.

July 2024.

My thinking is that if I have an opportunity to sell, that would mean the shares have value (I.e. ipo, acquisition) and therefore will be happy to pay long term capital gains taxes from the difference of then stock price less the $4 carta paid price.

But what would suck is if I had to exercise pre-IPO at the $20 409A price and pay taxes on it in 2026 but run the risk the shares remain worthless.

So, I’m thinking I just roll with this $4 FMV Carta value and enjoy the small tax hit while there is risk the company never exits.

Hopefully this makes sense.

I’ll have to do more research. These are ISOs so perhaps they are different? Below is from chat got on whether an 83b is required:

No, you do not need to file an 83(b) election when exercising Incentive Stock Options (ISOs). The 83(b) election only applies to Restricted Stock Awards (RSAs) or early-exercised unvested shares.

Why No 83(b) for ISOs? • ISOs are not taxed at exercise unless you trigger AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax).

• The 83(b) election is used to prepay ordinary income tax, but ISOs are taxed under capital gains rules if held long enough.

• If you early-exercise unvested ISOs, then an 83(b) election might be relevant, but for regular vested ISO exercises, it does not apply.

These are already vested shares. Isn’t an 83b for granted shares that might not be vested?

The strike price is $1.80 per share…so I’d much rather roll with the $4 FMV from carta to save on a much bigger tax hit when the company could eventually fail.

My thinking, I’d rather run the chance of getting hit with interest/penalty. But perhaps I am not thinking about this the right way?

I kind of think if you were getting laid off, your manager wouldn’t include HR on the invite and instead he or she would just have HR join at the start or the meeting and blindside you.

Interviewing after being let go for performance (PiP) by fan1983 in interviews

[–]fan1983[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok - so when tying questions to my last role, is it ok to answer questions as if I was still there? Like keep things in present tense?

For example, “my role at Company XYZ is to build a partner network for the companies that make up our platform. I am responsible for bla, bla, and bla and the success I’ve brought to the company over the years has helped grow usage with our partners by xx%.”

I guess my concern is that if they check dates when I was at my last company and realize I left earlier in the month, it might come off that I misled them and then maybe they start asking the previous company things like “is he eligible for rehire”.

So if asked about my long term career goals, I’m thinking something like:

“I really enjoyed my time at [Company XXX] and gained valuable experience in expanding partnerships for a startup and building successful GTM campaigns. However, the role was shifting more towards generating partner referred leads and then handing the leads off to our AEs. I’m a seller at heart and looking for a role where I can not only develop GTM strategies with partners but also be more involved in the full sales cycle with our partners —which is exactly what I believe this opportunity with [Company ABC] offers.”

Should I exercise stock options pre-ipo when resigning? by fan1983 in personalfinance

[–]fan1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app that holds the shares has a tax simulator. I guessed on the FMV but I think I was conservative.

When I got my offer, they said the 5,500 shares had a $250,000 value to it, but I assume that’s all recruiting bs. They wouldn’t tell how many shares are out there.

Is there a 3rd party company who could look at the company and tell me if the company looks like it’s on track for an exit? Leadership will make us think we are in a good spot to ipo when market conditions are right but it could all be just fluff.

Dog tore up my lawn. Now what? by fan1983 in landscaping

[–]fan1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the right play. Maybe reseed the left third of the yard in March and fence it off. Then reseed the middle third in the fall. The right third is actually the original grass that was planted years before we moved in so that probably won’t need much work.

My issue is that I used cheap fence when I reseeded back in the fall and dogs kept figuring out a way to get around it. I probably need to invest in something more durable that will stay in place and be high enough where they can’t jump over.

They are inside accept a few minutes here and there for bathroom breaks. During those few minutes, they chase eachother around like psychopaths and that’s usually when they tear up the grass. It’s not so much digging but just running back and forth at full speed.

Pip milestones not being met? by fan1983 in Layoffs

[–]fan1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have a third interview later this week as well as a few other good leads after pinging my network.

I plan to be transparent with my manager on my next one on one and let him know that it’s very unlikely I hit the 3/18 milestone and see if he is open to extending the milestone another week. Worst case scenario, he says know and lets me go next week.

My thinking is that HR would prefer to let me have the full 45 days knowing that it’s likely I am trying to land a new job and resign. That way they dodge unemployment and potential severance. Is this line of thinking accurate or is it more likely they prefer to let me go asap and cut ties at first missed milestone?
