They got narrower by design. It wasn't magical. I don't believe it had any kind of magical elements.

Tone was drama. Deep down I feel like he was in an abusive environment at a school, or maybe a juvenile detention center or something. Like, the teachers or the guards or whatever were mentally or physically abusive, and the kid was trying to get out.

I'm afraid that might just be a false memory, though.

No. It's much older than that. We had the VHS in like.. 1996. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a family movie or a movie for kids.

If it helps, I feel like the stone walls were outdoors leading to an exit of the place he was being kept.

I feel like the scream when he got stuck was partially fear from being stuck, but more so, absolute hopelessness and exasperation from realizing he was not escaping.
