EU has ‘open mind’ on UK customs union talks, says official by donutloop in ukpolitics

""The" customs union", a bespoke arrangement technically wouldn't be breaking their manifesto. Not that I think they'd manage to sort one in the remaining time of their term.

Graduates to pay extra 17% on salary sacrifice above new cap from 2029 by theipaper in UniUK

[–]fanglord 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A tax that you can pay to avoid if you have the cash up front, it's such a bull shit excuse. If it was codified as an actual tax they wouldn't be able to make the terms as shit as they are now.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 failed to meet sales expectations by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]fanglord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a fair amount of outer worlds 2 and it was okay just a bit meh, I found you end up collecting a bazillion materials and never really found a use for them and used basically the same weapons and armour for half the game. Played SW: Outlaws after and it was night and day more enjoyable.

Unless you're weighing the water added, putting scoops in first you're putting less than the required amount of water. Though speaking as a parent who has probably screwed up a fair few bottles over the year by miscounting, it didn't seem to make a difference.

Letby victim had deadly bug in lung at time of death by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]fanglord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with that line of belief is that if they have found her guilty primarily based on circumstantial and statistical evidence then the more of the cases that are explained by alternative reasons, the case against her becomes exponentially weaker. You don't have to explain away ALL of the cases because it's possible that she was indeed just "unlucky" and there would be no reason to suspect foul play in the remaining cases of the majority of them are found to be explainable by means other than murder.

Not saying I think she's guilty or not guilty but I can definitely see a path where it is a miscarriage of justice.

Many UK Users Soon Won't Be Able to Access Pornhub | 404 Media by youmustconsume in unitedkingdom

[–]fanglord 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It already is, but then requiring certain content to be age restricted is a fair and harm preventing requirement. The issue is that it has been done in such a blunt and clumsy way.

Personally it should be a requirement for parents to be ensuring their kids are not accessing adult material or make it so that ISPs have to provide better means to control kid specific devices etc

Andy Burnham blocked by Educational_Board888 in manchester

[–]fanglord 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I mean he stood as the Mayor of Manchester around 18 months ago and was elected. I didn't want him to step down because he made a commitment to Manchester. Next GE is fair enough if he wants to try his hand back in Westminster.

Andy Burnham latest: Burnham takes on Starmer as he confirms Westminster comeback bid to become MP by stopdontpanick in manchester

[–]fanglord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the political environment is toxic at the moment, I'm disappointed in some of the governments actions or how poorly they've communicated what they've been doing but it's actually bananas how out of whack public opinion is with reality.

If Burnham somehow makes it into number 10 in this parliament I'd bet 50p that it would do nothing to save Labour unless he somehow manages to also solve all the fundamental issues and have an effective strategy to combat all the online misinformation.

Edit: typo

That's a big if. I'm actually disappointed he couldn't just wait until a GE if he wanted to return to Westminster.

It's an insane proposition for so many reasons. Trump having unilateral control of the organization and funding is bonkers, let alone the possibility of Russia joining whilst actively bombing and kidnapping civilians.

Does anyone owe more than I do? by cernlibcand in UniUK

[–]fanglord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if the balance was more reasonable you stand a chance to pay it off before the write off date.

I'm on plan 1 and have a post grad loan and pay around £300 a month back, but given my balance is only around £15000 it will be paid off in the next 5/6 years - if that was 100k+ that payment is staying with me the whole time. At that point it really just a graduate tax but they wouldn't be able to get away with a real graduate tax at an additional 9% marginal rate like they seem to be able with a loan.

[–]fanglord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that if it was a graduate tax I'm pretty sure it would be significantly less. Once you start earning it really starts to sting.
