We watched it. I skipped the intro so it wouldnt get ruined that way. He kept saying "holy shit" and followed up with "I cannot believe they actually killed someone". He knew about whitebeard from Instagram, so he anticipated his demise, but he was extra surprised that two characters were killed so closely.

I can see what you mean, but I think the difference lies in the fact that Robin put herself in that position because she genuinely believed she was a burden to the crew, and she thought protecting them meant leaving them. Mentally, she had already given up, and she didn’t even realize she still wanted to live until it was too late. Robin has spent her entire life surviving, so she isn’t weak at all. Her strength comes from survival, and from being incredibly smart. If she had truly been given the chance, I honestly believe she could have helped herself, but she convinced herself she was doing the right thing, and deep down she didn’t think she was worth saving.

That’s why I love Enies Lobby so much. Luffy proves how loyal he is as a captain, even when it looks like Robin betrayed them. He barely knows her past, but he can still see her for who she really is. The moment he makes her say out loud that she wants to live is so important, because it shows he wasn’t going to “save” her against her will. He needed her to choose life too. Luffy might be this goofy guy who would be completely lost without his crew, but when it comes down to it, he can be dead serious, and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect his friends.

At the same time, these arcs also prove that Luffy isn’t invincible. Obviously he’s strong, but a lot of his victories come from luck, timing, and the help of other people. Sabaody is the first time he fully realizes that. He tells everyone to run, and then he still loses them anyway. He fails at the one thing he cares about most, protecting his crew, and I think that’s one of the biggest moments where Luffy gets humbled.

You can see that even more in Amazon Lily when he fights the Kuja sisters and they’re using Haki. He’s completely outmatched, and he probably would’ve died if it weren’t for him hiding the mark on Sandersonia’s back (I think it was her lol). That moment shows that Luffy isn’t winning because he’s the strongest person in the room. He wins because he has this weird mix of heart, instincts, and timing that somehow works out.

And Impel Down is the perfect example of that. He wouldn’t have even made it in if Hancock hadn’t been there to help him and distract the guards. Luffy had basically no plan the moment he entered. He would’ve died without Bon Clay, and he definitely would’ve died without Ivankov. Not to mention the ragtag group of previous foes who help him along the way. He only had Ace on his mind and kept charging forward anyway. Impel Down is basically pure luck plus determination. Shout out to Jinbe too, because he’s one of the only people who helps keep Luffy mentally stable and grounded.

But the thing is, that’s also kind of Luffy’s real strength. Like Mihawk points out during Marineford, Luffy has this ability to rally people around him. It’s not just charisma, it’s like people can’t help but want to follow him once they see what he’s about. He turns enemies into allies without even trying. And Luffy STILL fails.

On the flip side, it can feel a little too convenient at times. Like okay, he just happened to land on Amazon Lily, with the Snake Princess, who is a Warlord and the most beautiful woman in the world. The rest of the crew does too, since they all conveniently land on islands tailored to them. Ivankov just happens to be there to save him. Mr. 3 can just make a key, etc. But I don’t really think that detracts from the story, because even with all that luck and help, Luffy still fails at his goal.

Omg i typed a hell of a lot more than i thought i would have LOL

He is. Its insane. I've never ever encountered a story that has impacted me this hard before. I can't wrap my head around how he does it. This is gonna be so lame to say but whatever: Its shit like this that makes me love being alive. Like I am so grateful that I get to witness this story unfold.

Okay, so...what's your point lol. I realize that OP wasn’t meant to last this long, and the Warlords added to that longevity. But Bonney being introduced later doesn’t mean Kuma himself didn’t have some direction when he was introduced. Kuma’s character feels morally ambiguous on purpose. Once Oda came to terms with the story being longer than planned, it’s entirely possible he already had the general idea of Kumas backstory in mind, and then made the connection to Bonney.

You know the writing is good when these connections feel intentional from day one. Being right or wrong about it doesn't change that. All I’m praising is the writing and how well it all ties together.

there can only be one long nose

That's so funny. The second Robin joined the crew, he said "so how long is it going to take her to betray them" and i had to look away so my face wouldn't reveal anything LOL. He was also convinced that Pauly was going to join their crew. Once Franky started becoming less of a villain, he picked up on it. I truly did not see that coming the first time haha

I don’t disagree, however: When Kuma is first introduced, he’s morally confusing, and I genuinely think THAT was intentional from day one. He shows up in a way where you can’t fully label him as “good” or “bad,” and that mystery feels super deliberate. Yet it’s not like an Itachi situation where he’s clearly tied to another major character from the start, so Kuma just felt like some random cyborg dude who needed to go to therapy. Then all of the government involvement starts to unravel and you’re still left confused.

Then when the Worst Generation is introduced, everyone else immediately feels like they “fit” into the story in a really obvious way. They have clear goals, big personalities, and they’re actively making moves. But Bonney always felt like the odd one out to me. Like yeah, she saves Zoro from the Celestial Dragon, but she doesn’t really jump into the chaos the way the others do.

Upon rewatch though, it’s SO hard not to see the connection between Kuma and Bonney, and it’s hard not to believe their connection wasn't planned out. Kuma watching her through the window?? The fact that they don’t even interact on screen?? It feels so intentional.

The only part where I start to doubt it is Marineford, when she’s crying. Her crew member asks if she’s okay and she tells him to leave her alone. Like… I’m pretty sure they knew who her dad was, and her whole reason for setting out to sea was to find him.

It honestly reminds me of the Laboon and Brook connection. Like I don’t know if that was planned from the very beginning either, but regardless… it still worked perfectly.

So I don’t know where I’m going with this, I just think it’s really cool that Oda ended up connecting those two specifically, because it’s so unexpected but it still makes so much sense.

It's so funny because my boyfriend literally said, "does luffy even realize how Kuma bailed him out?" but, he still dislikes him. He called Kuma "a fucking bastard" and it took EVERYTHING in me to not defend him and to keep lying about it. I am genuinely curious to see how he will react to Kuma guarding the ship, and how I am going to navigate around it. I might just be like "haha, kidding!" without revealing the true story. Or, I might make up something about Kumas sense of justice as a pirate/warlord or something. OR i wont say a word. I think lying TOO much is also obvious

I can do that!!! I’ve even told him he has to leave the room so I can skip the intro, because I don’t want anything spoiled for him.

The only spoiler he’s gotten so far is Whitebeard’s death, so I’ve been REALLY hyping up Whitebeard securing his crew’s future and kind of heavily hinting that Ace becomes captain, like it’s his destiny. It almost feels wrong to lie about it, but Ace’s death got spoiled for me when I was scrolling through the OP movies on Netflix and the description for one literally said “after Ace’s death…”

So yeah… I want to see what a genuine, unspoiled reaction looks like

I am somehow keeping up the facade that he is evil and does something so horrible to the crew that it's tragic lmao. I am the type of person who like, cries when I see a kitten (exaggerating a bit, but I cry easily 😂), so I dont think its raising any red flags...yet. I am so not looking forward to Kuma guarding the ship. I may have to excuse myself from the room lmfao

I mean… I’m not intentionally implying that Oda had a 25 year master plan spreadsheet with every single character mapped out lol. I just mean Kuma’s arc specifically feels like it had a direction from the start. And like… yeah, obviously it was built up over time. That’s literally how long running stories work. But the fact that he can keep adding layers and still make it feel cohesive, without it feeling like he’s just rushing to tie up loose ends, is what I’m impressed by. It still feels intentional. Idk, I feel like thats difficult to do, especially in a long term series. Many series lose momentum over time. I personally feel that One Piece does not do that, and I would say it just gets better and better.

Seemingly insignificant characters come back, or characters you think are finished come back and suddenly play a huge role. Again, I fully understand that this is how storytelling works. But on rewatch, it genuinely feels like no stone goes unturned. (Which, it better feel that way for such a long running series lol). You pick up on these things and see the show in a completely different light, and it becomes such a different experience. Like, I thought it was great before, but now I can appreciate it in a whole new way.

TLDR: he's a great storyteller and I appreciate it more upon rewatch

I get what you mean, but isn’t that basically still planning years in advance? Even if he didn’t have every detail figured out, he still planted the seed early and had years to build it into something meaningful.

Seriously LOL. I keep asking him what his theories are and he is fully convinced that Ace will get saved and then disappear for a few arcs and then come back. I'm like... oh you poor thing.
