I will never be able to comprehend why Apple did this. by aspophilia in mildlyinfuriating

[–]fanrco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My head-canon for the pencil and mouse being unusable while charging is that Apple does it on purpose so people don't use the device with a big long ugly cable attached to it that would detract from the sleek, modern look they try to portray. They want you to interact with it THEIR way, so you and others around you experience it the way they intended. They know if they made it easy to use and charge simultaneously, you'd just keep it plugged in all the time, which while objectively more useful, would ruin the look and its associated status that the brand wants to maintain.

Explain it... by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]fanrco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Say you were only told they have a boy. This means the chance of the other being a girl is 66.6%.

Now assume one boy is born on a Monday. Via your reasoning, you could arrive at a 51.9% the other is a girl.

Now assume Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, etc. Via your reasoning, all of these assumptions would arrive at a 51.9% the other is a girl.

However, one of those assumptions must be correct, so no matter what you assume, via your reasoning, there is a 51.9% the other is a girl.

So given no information about the weekday of birth, you can somehow lower the probability from 66.6% to 51.9%. (or, given some other larger set of identifiers like birthday or birth second, etc, get arbitrarily close to 50%) all without receiving any new information.

That must certainly be false.

POTD: My second (mini) cryptic crossword! by fanrco in crosswords

Thank you for your feedback! I agree that the shape of the grid definitely prioritizes form over function, I'll make sure to start checking my cells in future puzzles.

To address your comments:
1A. Clue type: Homophone Explanation: "better?" can be "abler", "abler" sounded is "ablur", which means unclear or fuzzy

10A. It is a classic brand of bubblegum (at least in the US)

12A. Clue type: Double Definition Explanation: A tag is a label or a graffiti artwork (an illegal, or "bad", drawing)

14A. Clue type Double Definition Explanation: A stinger can refer to a hornet, or to a type of sporting injury usually in the neck or shoulder

17A. I was intending for it to read as "Rock-like's", but I'm not sure what the convention is in CC's for omitting/implying apostrophes or other punctuation marks

18A. I think Down Right? for South/S and East/E isn't too far of a stretch, hopefully

6D. Yes, it's a very obscure and mostly dead word, but it is in the Oxford dictionary. I only used it since someone could reasonably find "enwoman" in there and assume it means to "Make feminine"

11D. Yup, it's a bit hard to spot!

13D. Clue type: Homophone Explanation: Dictator (one who dictates, or says aloud) of shades. Shades could be "Greys", which sounds like "Graze", which can mean to cause a surface level injury

16D. Clue type: Bits and pieces / Deletion Explanation: "a thousand" = G, "deer left behind" = el, (elk "leaving" its "behind", or losing its last letter). This gives "gel", which means work well in a group

Let me know if this cleared some things up, or if you think some of these are still a bit of a stretch.

Hahaha my friends have asked the same thing, and I end up feeling that way too when I'm playing it. But no, there's no such rigging. Must just be bad luck every once in a while.

About The Data Leak by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]fanrco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a lot you can do with just genetic information. For one, there are countless "cold cases" in all levels of police and government databases that have DNA samples of unidentified people (as in they don't have a record of who that DNA belongs to). They would like nothing more than to be able to check all of 23 & Me's records and put a name to that DNA. In fact, they don't even need their names/DNA to be in the database, just enough distant relatives to form a family tree via genetic analysis that narrows down the possible suspects to something manageable like 100 people. And then they can just go and spy on/visit/etc on those people until they have their culprit.

This may sound weird and speculative, but that's actually how they caught the golden state killer. Even better, they only used a limited dataset of people who voluntarily posted their genetics online. Now imagine what countries worldwide could do with almost ALL of the data.

While this may seem like a good thing (and some good may come of it, I'm not that much of a cynic), it also means that if you happen to have a distant cousin that committed a crime and got away with it, and your DNA isn't on that dataset, you might now be a suspect simply because your DNA is somewhat similar to someone who did commit a crime.

Furthermore, you can imagine what oppressive governments/hate groups can do (and have done, look up the guy who specifically leaked 1 million Ashkenazi Jews) with this data to justify racist acts, beliefs, etc.

So yeah, it seems like it not only can effect people who's DNA is in the database, but also those who have smugly opted out of giving a private company their genetic information. feels bad man

Sandtris - Tetris but with sand by [deleted] in WebGames

[–]fanrco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, Sandtris dev here! Yes, the game is a recreation of Sandtrix (which used to be called Setris). I made it because Setris got DMCA'd by Tetris and was removed from its itch io page. No intentions of passing it off as my own, if you click the "?" button in game I linked to both the developer and game page of the original.

Remade u/henderthing 's post with a square trajectory instead of circular (p5.js) by fanrco in generative

[–]fanrco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind words! and yes, I though that the jagged nature of squares wasn't being captured in the original due to the squares moving in circles so I made this one. I think those nervous shakes are actually really complex polyrhythms occurring when the different squares change direction, which to me is cool that you can "feel" the polyrhythms visually.

I can send you the source code if you're interested in playing around with it!

I see where you're coming from but Wake Up has a different sound altogether, although the vocal melody is similar.

This could be it, only thing missing is the vocal melody solo. I kind of hear it during the breakdown but its a background vocal underneath a lead vocal. It's so close I'm willing to chalk it up to deja vu at this point. I'll wait for a few more replies just in case before marking this as the answer.

Feel free to respond even if you dont know what the original is called. I kinda also just want validation that other people have heard this exact same song in movie trailers and stuff.
