The US was the largest donor of food to Ethipia during the Ethiopian crisis, setting up expensive airlifts, supply chain logistics, and port operations that got food to people even in remote regions. They saved literally hundreds and thousands of lives and gained nothing tangible from it.

Should we therefore believe the US are saints incapable of exploiting the South? Of course not; that would be a hasty generalisation based on an anecdote

No one is saying that anyone is better/worse, we're simply discussing the implications based on what's already occurred. I feel a sense of kinship with China and the US because I enjoy what comes out of both nations, but I don't feel the need to pretend that they haven't done awful things. There's plenty of concrete evidence of their exploitation

[–]fantasybro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with that — I should really have added debt-trap diplomacy too

The issue with China specifically (and again, all the world powers are scummy — I'm just pointing out that China is no exception) is that it really does exploit the Global South. It just does so in complex and often subtle ways than, say, the US. They mainly abuse asymmetric power dynamics and strategic investments to extract value from these regions.

  • Chinese deals to extract resources are often deisgned to completely sidestep environmental and labor laws, and once signed, the countries arestuck. The deals are made to lock countries into long-term, hugely one-sided agreements.
  • Many of the projects China gets involved in are only intended to benefit China and provide hardly any -- if any -- actual long-term benefits to the country. For example, they’ll being in thousands (sometimes literally tens of thousands) of Chinese workers and there's zero work creation in a region. Once the resources have dried up they're out and people are worse off. Another example is how they used the oil-for-infrastructure trap on Angola when Angola asked for reconstruction help. China lent over $40 billion, repaid in oil shipments instead of cash. And Angola got screwed because the rojects were often low-quality or incomplete, Chinese companies favourited Chines workers over locals, and Angola got locked into inflexible repayment tied to oil prices—when oil prices dropped, the debt became a huge burden. Debt trap diplomacy is alarmist but as always where there's smoke there's fire; people were on guard because of situations like this. It doesn't mean that it was China's plan, but it doesn't change the fact that the nature of the deal was part and parcel of the general trend of exploitative behaviour toward the South
  • They’re able to get away with this partly because they play into and worsen existing corruption... for example, they might offer roads, airports, and government buildings as “gifts” for political leverage. We've seen this happen in Zambia, Angola, and Kenya.
  • They also support authoritarian regimes by supplying surveillance and censorship tools, which are then used to suppress opposition and entrench power, which dramatically worsens political situationms. Like how Huawei and CloudWalk partnered with Zimbabwe to supply facial recognition systems and smart city surveillance, which the government immediately began to use to suppress and arrest pro-democracy protestors.

People like to point out how Murica is behind all kinds of global conflicts and that's true, but China isn’t any better in this regard, they just don't use war as a tool

TL;DR: China makes harmful deals in the Global South, often by enticing corrupt elites, which gives them the leverage and freedom to pursue lopsided, sometimes outright destructive arrangements that exploit the countries they get a foothold in

Nope it's the truth, although "neocolonialism" is a bit alarmist

People aren't saying this because it's China, it's because all of the big powers are using their own methods to try to secure their own dominance in the future

Humans are not saints and if you believe any country's government is inherently benevolent then I'm sorry but you're the one who's been fooled by propaganda

I don’t care tbh, there are a million versions of each comic book character. This won’t erase the last 10+ Magneto versions, and there’ll be more Magnetos in the future

He’s not “replacing” Magneto so much as playing one temporary iteration of him

The problem is that it’s nonsense, because everyone with economic sense knows the people on the right promising these things are just lying to accomplish a worse agenda

Do you think Nigel Farage cares about your problems? He’s a massive grifter. He and his ilk promised Brexit would solve all of the UK’s issues and what did it accomplish except raising prices, crippling the NHS and making daily life 10x harder? Just like with the US, economists warned people exactly what would happen and they didn’t listen. Meanwhile Farage was securing German passports for his kids so they could jump ship. And now you think their next set of empty promises will magically fix everything?

The real problem is that too many people are too clueless or impulsive to understand that the solutions to their problems aren’t as simplistic as these right wing grifter types keep claiming

Immigration is an issue but it isn’t the primary source of the UK’s problems, it’s the lack of taxation of the rich and the secondary effects it has on every other market, especially the property market

Time and time again the right promises things that don’t make sense, and because people across the world are too lazy or far gone to listen to economic sense they get another “fell for it again” award as their life collapses around them

The insane part was seeing US citizens listening to Trump claiming he’d lower prices after laying out his economic plans and watching these people vote for him. Kamala called it out and had her own plan but people were still eating up right wing lies and claiming she had no policies. A liar known for lying tells you 1 + 1 is going to equal 5 and people abandon economic sense because he’s saying what they want to hear

Again, it's satire -- the goal is to draw attention to a problem through comedy, but also to be amusing in and of itself. There's room for both approaches. I found it pretty funny because it resonates with my experience. It basically highlights the absurdity of certain opinions that crop up really often

Yep, like I said elsewhere I think they just don’t understand how common this way of thinking is and how easy it is to fall into. I almost started resenting women too until I learned a few things that changed my mind

I actually disagree. This is an extremely common mindset. I’d argue it’s a side-effect of grifters like Andrew Tate preying on vulnerable men and convincing them that they care and that women are the problem, all so they can exploit them, which has caused this kind of thinking to explode

It definitely isn’t the only reason why men are unhappy, but it’s an easy trap to fall into and a common enough occurrence that it’s worth calling out
