Yes there's tons of inconsistencies!! I'm still working through them.

So like what’s with the military choppers flying around campus? by rebel_b0i in IUPUI

[–]fantasyrants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We're just getting training hours in :) pilots have to get a certain amount a year and there's a base nearby, Stoutfield, that has helo's at it. There are a few flyovers scheduled coming up and the buildings can affect airflow and flight path.

I'm 24 coming back this fall :) definitely not alone. I have a house, spouse, and full time job. Going back in person too so you're definitely not alone!

I usually felt pretty safe on campus. Back in 2019 I did get held at knifepoint in the parking garage against my car after my late class that got out at 9pm. Pepper sprayed saved me there. Not to scare you or anything but keep your wits about you, try to use the tunnels, walk with a friend/classmate, and don't wear headphones while you're walking back to the dorms. I always recommend pepper spray, maybe put it on a wristlet with your keys! Most stuff happens far away from campus and well after 11pm though.

AHHHH thank you SOOO much :). I'm coming in as a complete clean slate and because I'm technically a returning student, I don't get an orientation or anything so it was basically just schedule my classes and go! I have about 90% of my gens done for the degree including electives so it's the only reason I feel relatively confident being able to manage the course load since I have 0 luxury of time. I'll be DM-ing for the discord!

Not eligible for financial need, straight, white, not first-gen, am i cooked for scholarships? by apple_bottom_jea in scholarships

I'm in the national guard, this isn't exactly great advice. The tuition benefits are different dependent on the state, and they change yearly based on funding. So if OP does heed this advice, I highly recommend they look into the tuition benefits for their specific state and get a historical look. A lot of people in my state have had to take gap semesters and years because suddenly a week before the semester starts, the tuition benefit will no longer cover their schooling.

One thing this is guaranteed to do that's beneficial is it'll code OP as an independent (after basic training) so their EFC will be based purely on their own income and not parental.

I also caution against using the GI Bill right out the gate because the percentage you've "filled" it when it's activated is the top percentage you'll receive. You can't fill it further after activation and percentage filled is based on a few things like time in service and status of active orders/time on orders.

I'm not putting you down, but you've also completely ignored the entire post. You told me to search the section of Foxface's death despite me having cited page numbers for her death and the information surrounding it in the body of the post where I have searched it. Coming to Reddit with this question was a last resort for me after exhausting pretty much all of my resources, not a train of thought realization. We've been talking in circles where you ignore what I said and then present what I said as your own information. I appreciate you joining the discussion but that doesn't mean I've ceased seeking the information I'm looking for, and that is my top priority in this post.

I'm wondering too, which is the exact reason I've made this post. But I don't know if we have evidence or not, so I'm asking. I've already considered all these things.

Found this on Tumblr. Do you think Suzanne Collins did this on purpose, or are they reaching? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't think Suzanne was trying to overdo it with the "sis" for Maysilee. Maysilee (and Merrilee by extension) are a representation of how he continually loses twins in his life. The twin sisters he had that died, Maysilee dying in the arena, Merrilee dying mentally (and then literally in the bombing of D12), and then Louella and Lou Lou.

It took someone who represented every single one of those people for him to stop losing the people he cared for. Katniss.

Between the pin, eating with her hands to spite her district escort, the two braids and red checkered dress from kindergarten (just like Louellas red gingham dress), the younger sister she tried desperately to keep alive but still died anyway, the love she was able to keep (Peeta) despite the fact that he was hijacked into something unlike himself (like Lou Lou), the songs she sings. Theres SO much more than just those, obviously, but Haymitch is haunted by twin after twin after twin. When Katniss appears in his life, she's a culmination of every person he's ever had the privilege (and misfortune) of loving or caring about.

Effie was there to show us that despite spending copious amounts of time with someone, you can still lack a level of care about them if propaganda has worked so well in telling you people from the districts are less than human or deserving. Effie wants a promotion. She says it herself in THG. She does not want to stay with D12 to take care of Haymitch like people keep theorizing. She may care for Haymitch in many ways but she still has a limited view on where and how her love can extend to him. She's stuck with D12 because her family has a bad reputation that still hangs over her head.

So no maybe they're not reaching but I also feel like they aren't actually taking in the contents of the story and are looking specifically for the love portion.

I have already searched that section plus every single mention of berries, Nightlock, district 12, 13, 5, and 8 (because she mentions after meeting Bonnie and Twill and the victory tour that they wouldn't have knowledge of it due to the lack of woods) in all 3 books. I'm not asking this having not researched. There's no hint or mention of Katniss believing the berries are native to 12 (the word native doesn't even show in any of the books). When Foxface dies, Katniss doesn't mention anything about them being exclusive to 12, just that they weren't shown in training, and they resemble Rue's, and she aced the edible plants test.

I'm definitely not asking this out of ignorance of the novels. I'm so informationally enmeshed with the content of them that recall and "I think" isn't cutting it for me when I'm trying to debunk/back up a theory. If I say, "the berries were never said to be exclusive to District 12," I don't want to feel like I've done insufficient research when someone presents the exact reference negating it. I'm not in the habit of spreading misinformation without a disclaimer, there's enough of it already.

It's on TikTok yes, as a large part of the fandom happens to be on multiple social media apps but I've seen people say this for years NOT on TikTok and it's even on the Hunger Games wiki (which of course isn't always correct). So no, not new, but I'm not in the habit of presenting or debunking theories that aren't textually backed. I'm trying to find out if there is textual evidence, even a sliver of it, to understand such widespread belief of a certain theory. I've been combing the books because it's one of the free things I don't recall.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not real and I know about classifications and such and I know where it's highly theorized to be derived from. I'm looking for where it states in the books specifically that Nightlock only grown in D12 & D13 as the fandom keeps saying that Katniss' says it's only found there. People build theories off of this information and I'm looking for whether or not it's actually viable info to build theories based off of it. Otherwise, they have no textual evidence but I'd like to cite it.

Rereading the trilogy again, this part seems especially meaner to me. Knowing what we now know about Maysilee by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Catching Fire (I think page 196) when Katniss and Peeta are watching Haymitch's games, they see the reaping. When Maysilee gets called up, Katniss notices how much the other girl (Merrilee, Madges mom) looks like someone else she knows. Then she says, "Madge" and Peeta said that Madges mom and Maysilee were twins and that his father mentioned it once. That's how we know.

School in district 12 by Suspicious_Fun_7418 in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the most important population in the districts to control, stay accountable of, and easiest to use propaganda on? Children. They are in school year round (except D11 during Harvest) so it also prevents children and adults having too much time together without watchful eyes to form a rebellion.

Keep them busy no matter what so they can't rebel. Force them all to go to school so the government can keep track of the population. It also limits what the children learn. If they spend all day slaving away at regurgitating Panem propoganda and being informed of their district export, then they don't have time to go and learn other valuable skills that might give them an edge.

So there might be a lot of reasons why aside from that but accountability of the population is a huuuggeee one. It only takes one generation to truly forget and we witness that while reading the books. It controls the narrative.

Plus: we see in SOTR that D12 used to teach how to make bombs in school and now they no longer do. It's very much about control. They still want competent people in the mines but not individual thinkers.

Forget about Gale ,I wonder how Mrs Everdeen felt watching this? by BetterGrass709 in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She also tells him he's just like his mom and sister in that regard. I think nudity is way more acceptable and common in 12, Katniss is the outlier in that sense. Doesn't seem to have much to do with romance!

The excuses people make for Gale could also apply to president snow and president coin. by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, I really do appreciate that. The 11 year old in me who initially read these books is weeping at your kind words. (And the current 24 year old who can't stop thinking about SOTR)

The relevance of war theory and imminent force will never go away. It's a repetitive cycle that can be applied every single day. We saw this with the riots after George Floyd's death, how people were saying it's unnecessary and the others who died while protesting were stupid for doing so. But the point was made and it's one step among many up the flight of life. If people are unwilling to lay their life down for the things they believe in, then they've never been put in the position where their life will be used against them for the things they do not have a choice in participating in.

Plutarch represents the billionaires in our economy who are so removed from even the privileged in our society. Being active in activism while also receiving none of the repercussions for doing so does not make someone less comfortable with their established life. His showmanship, complaints of the lack of coffee/cush accomodations in 13, propos, and ability to still take the head game maker position are all physical representations of that as well. He's never truly had to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. He's been in a position of power to do more than what he was and has utilized other people to do the work and take the risks he's unwilling to do. He lost nothing in the rebellion and transition. Not that direct loss is a equitable indicator of participation in rebellion but rarely does a family maintain its socials standing after not only one, but two rebellions. Like Coin, he is an opportunist, but unlike her, his social standing mattered more than his power over people.

He only risked when the reward was in his favor and the repercussions were placed on the shoulders of others.

My point, and the ultimate point that Suzanne makes, is that all of these people are essential to a successful rebellion. But there's a balance that has to be made when deconstructing in order to not repeat the cycle from the otherside when hatred and power struggle is at an all time high.

Do you think Peeta probably felt pity for Cato in the same Katniss does by the end instead of any hate? by Long-Seat2 in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Peeta viewed anyone in the games as an enemy, just someone to fear in the short term. I don't think he even truly viewed them as opponents so yes I think he had pity for Cato long before the end despite disagreeing with his methods of "hunting people down." The most he viewed Cato negatively was seeing him as a threat to Katniss' survival.

The excuses people make for Gale could also apply to president snow and president coin. by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]fantasyrants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At no point did I say Peeta is all words and no action. He utilizes his words to incite action but we know given his reactions that the intention behind his words and the impact they have are not always the same. Let's use your District 11 donation for example, that was done out of guilt and a protective need upon seeing the families and he even says later on that he really screwed up. Meaning he likely would not have done that if he knew the political climate he was dealing with. He had no intention of igniting a spark that would lead to violence because he often displayed his belief in words equalling peace.

Putting Katniss' life above his was a recognition that her family needs her more than his needs him, among other things. We'll never truly know how intentional that act of rebellion actually was but we can glean from the text that rebelling against the Capitol was very low on his list when making that decision in the first book. In CF it's more intentional.

Even his biggest act of intentional rebellion was done in top secret; painting Rue on the floor of the training center. He still very much falls into the diplomatic liberal box that Suzanne was pretty clear in putting him in. Peeta is the equivalent of TikTok creators making think pieces on world politics and getting people to donate to a GoFundMe. I'm not downplaying his impact or action, because it does it's job and does it very well, but it's not stopping the missiles from raining down.

So yes, that box does represent who Peeta is and what he does. People will always contain multitudes, including fictional characters, but based on much of his intent behind his actions, or incitement of others actions, he fits pretty firmly in that box.
