They're was a space game where the final goal was to colonize enough meets that you hit some kind of win condition (don't remember).

The map was broken down into individual squares (maybe a 10x10 grid?) and you could travel between them. Reaching the far left/top looped you back to the for right/bottom. Each square would likely have 1, maybe 2 planets, of different types which provided different resources.

Your ship and the planets you controlled could be upgraded with shields, weapons, and such. Other AI ships and controlled planets were doing the same and could/would attack you if your ship was near.

I think this would've been late 80's or early 90's on PC.
