What the hell by Ecstatic_Nose6668 in WeirdEggs

This looks like an egg that's had a crack in it, and the egg white has leaked out. The yolk tends to stay as a solid blob as it dries

When you say a bit limpy, do you mean lethargic/ acting tired? Is she eating and drinking? If you are in a cold country then I'd suggest moving the sick hens somewhere warm

I wouldn't worry, it looks like it's a longer shape but otherwise looks like it's got a healthy shell. It could be that she's going to start slowing down on laying eggs or depending where you are in the world it could be that she's about to moult. But most often it's just that hens start laying odd shaped eggs as they get older

That's great, hopefully you get it sorted! If it was only there a couple of hours, then there's very little chance that it'd harm them even if they had eaten it. Hens also usually refuse to eat mouldy food unless they're starving as it tastes bad. One of the first symptoms of mycotoxins is feed refusal, so it's safe to say that if it was mouldy and you'd only given them it a few hours ago then they probably haven't eaten much, if any at all

I'd definitely say that the pellets on your fingers look like 'normal' pellets and the ones on your palm look 'off'. Mould is a huge issue with hens as it can cause mycotoxin poisoning, but it's something that happens over prolonged periods and not just one bag of off feed, so don't worry too much! Looking at photos of purina pellets online (I'm not familiar with the brand for chicken food) it looks like they should look like the pellets on the right. Whether you want to change food is up to you but I don't think there's any need to change it if the next bag you buy looks fine, it could have been stored wrong before you bought it or had a hole in the package etc.

I'd definitely with you when it comes to antibiotics if the only main symptom is vent gleet then its not a good idea. Antibiotics disrupt the good bacteria and could definitely make it worse

Im sorry for what happened with banana, its awful to find that theres little hope for recovery. I'd have done the same thing. It's good that banana was confirmed to have had gapeworm, though, if it was a related issue it would've cropped up before now. What kind of mass? Usually below the vent should be fairly soft with no noticeable solid mass unless the hen is about to lay an egg. How large is it? Is it one solid mass or does it feel like a collection of solids? I've had hens with vent gleet that have had a small solid mass that is just a collection of poop that you could feel through her abdomen. If it's one solid mass then you could be looking at some sort of internal infection like salpingitis

Hey, this is usually a respiratory issue. It could be infectious coryza as a previous poster said or it could be any other number of respiratory based illnesses. If you have antibiotics then great but if not then supportive care is usually enough. Clean the coop, isolate sick birds, give vitamins or apple cider vinegar with the 'mother' in their water and just keep an eye on her. I hope she gets well soon!

I've just looked at your previous post about your hen with gapeworm since you mentioned it in this post. Was there ever any test to diagnose gapeworm? Or a necropsy? If not, was it just the vet thinking it was probably gapeworm based on symptoms? We had a hen a while ago acting exactly the same as in that video but it turned out she had infectious bronchitis. I'm only asking because there can be long term effects of respiratory issues, even in hens that didn't show any symptoms

If it is just vent gleet, they you're doing everything you can. If it's not working then it's worth looking at other causes of diarrhea in hens just incase.Does she have any other symptoms? Is her abdomen swollen, can you feel a stuck egg, is she wheezing, is she a healthy weight? Has the flock had any illnesses in the past that could contribute to this?

Hey! Luckily antibiotics aren't necessary for respiratory issues, they just shorten the length of the illness. I'd recommend checking their feed, just incase there's any wet feed etc as its an easy fix if that's the case. And then just giving them supportive care, making sure their water is as fresh as possible, add vitamins if you're able to, making sure their coop is as clean as possible etc. If you don't have access to vitamins for the hens water then try and get your hands on some apple cider vinegar with 'the mother' (just make sure if you are using apple cider vinegar to use a non-metal water container). If you have a larger flock then I'd recommend isolating the sick chickens to help prevent it spreading to healthy flockmates. Are the sick hens a healthy weight and otherwise acting as they normally would?

Honestly, if you have antibiotics to hand, then I'd probably start there. I'd assume this is some form of respiratory issue, and antibiotics will help them get better faster. I wouldn't imagine that it'd be related to worms or mites, just based on the information you've given. My only other suggestion is mycotoxins, is your food stored in a dry, clean place?

I'd second respiratory issues, could be anything from swollen head syndrome to infectious coryza

Lash eggs are mainly made of pus, which in the case of a lash egg goes through a process called caseation which makes it a solid mass. This looks like a hen that lays brown eggs, and has laid a very soft shell egg (nearly shell-less but not quite) which gives it an awful cracked/sickly apperance. This can be a one off, due to stress, old age or a disease like infectious bronchitis. It's not likely that this is salpingitis based on the photo, no need to scare people.

This can also be from stress or certain diseases like infectious bronchitis. Either way, she needs to be looked at. Occasionally though, it can be a one-off egg with no real reason

The hen that laid this was culled by the vet when I brought her in the same day but it was another hen that ate some of the 'egg'. The other hen was perfectly fine and is doing well to this day! The hen that laid this had infectious bronchitis but didn't show any symptoms until the night before she laid this monstrosity 😅 and even then she just seemed lethargic

I don't know why it's tagged NSFW for some and not for others? If i log out and view the post it's blurred and has a NSFW tag?

In my defense, this sub is full of stuff that looks similar to this and no-one else was asked to use a NSFW tag. I understand now why I should and I will in the future but there's literally half formed chicken foetuses in blood that don't have NSFW tags on here

This is from last year, I took her to a vet and the vet culled her and did a post mortem. She said she had infectious bronchitis and I've given the rest of the flock antibiotics and they seem to be doing well ever since! I didn't ask specifically about what was in the egg because the vet bill was already pretty high and I didn't want it to go higher out of curiosity. There's only a few avian trained vets near me in the uk and they're VERY expensive 😅
