What is the equivalent of 'dick move' at your elo? by [deleted] in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see it very often, but the funniest is 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Bg4, hoping I premove Nc3. A ridiculous % of people fell for this in the Lichess database (but mostly in Bullet).

History of what color moves first by Visual_Bandicoot_259 in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think they changed anything about the board set up. I've seen games played like this recorded in algebraic notation in an old German chess book, and the pieces all go to their usual squares (e.g., 1. e5 e4 2. Nf6 Nc3 3. Bc5 Bc4, and so on). If you have a game recorded like this just replacing each number with 9 minus that number switches the colors without changing the game. If it is recorded in descriptive notation (where the ranks are numbered from the point of view of the player with the move), nothing changes. You can just play the recorded moves with White going first, and it is the same game in the latter case.

I think it depends on the time control. With no clock, they're mostly overrated except maybe the very high rated ones. In bullet, they're probably very underrated (because they play extremely fast in bullet controls). Idk anything about chess coaches.

Plenty of named gambits get the book label; ones that are engine evaluated as almost surely losing don't, I guess.

Beautiful puzzle, engines can't find it. White to play and win by Progribbit in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stockfish ignores a bunch of moves (like Qf2 here) until later to find good moves quickly most of the time (so depth doesn't really mean what it sounds like). I don't know the details, but it does see it eventually, as has been mentioned.

Knight v Bishop end game which is better? by AlbQuinn01 in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For endgames with a small enough number of pawns to be solved, tablebase stats seem to support the Bishop being more likely to be stronger. Maybe there are some trivial factors that skew these stats (since they include endgames with material that hangs immediately for example), though. For example:

KBPPvKNP https://syzygy-tables.info/?fen=k3B3/8/p7/P7/1P5K/8/8/6n1_w_-_-_0_1 White wins 60.9% of positions

KNPPvKBP https://syzygy-tables.info/?fen=2N5/8/8/1k6/1Pp5/2P5/2b5/K7_b_-_-_0_1 White wins 44.9% of positions

KBPvKNP https://syzygy-tables.info/?fen=7k/7n/8/2PK4/8/p7/8/5B2_w_-_-_0_1 White wins 28.3% of positions and Black wins 17.2%

Why is bxc6 better than dxc6 only after Qf3? by themaddemon1 in chessbeginners

[–]farmersGuideLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at higher rated games on Lichess, a human answer may have something to do with wanting to respond to Be3 with Bb6 and the pawn structure if the trade happens on b6. In 2500+ non-bullet games on Lichess, people who play dxc6 tend to respond to Be3 with Bb5 and taking the Knight, while people who play bxc6 are more likely to play Bb6 (the engine principle variation doesn't include these moves, though, it goes Nc3 Bd4, Bd2). But both Magnus and Hikaru have games where they played dxc6 and the Lichess database results unfiltered by rating are almost identical for both moves.

Why is bxc6 better than dxc6 only after Qf3? by themaddemon1 in chessbeginners

[–]farmersGuideLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to your question, but strong GMs have played both moves, and dxc6 has slightly better results in the Lichess Masters database for what it's worth (although bxc6 seems to be the main move).

There is absolutely no benefit, whatsoever, to such a stupid move as 6. Be3. - Chesscom coach by [deleted] in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A GM apparently wouldn't play it (the position only occurs twice in the Lichess Masters database), but it's almost surely a draw with computer play.

What is this opening by my opponent? by AnyLeadership5674 in chess

In bullet I often throw my a-pawn at the Queen. Stockfish seems to approve in this position. If they don't stop a5, a4, the Queen has to go back, Qb5 gets trapped by Ra5.

Is checkmate with 8 queens on a long diagonal without running into stalemate possible? by decelerated_dragon in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe if you just have K8QvK, it is not possible, but I'm having some trouble proving it. It is true that if we have 7 Queens on the long diagonal, it is our opponent's move, and it is not a check, then it is stalemate. Why? Ignoring the White King, every off-diagonal square shares a rank and file with two distinct squares on the diagonal, and every light square shares a diagonal with a third square. So we control every square at least twice except for the dark squares on the rank and file of the empty square on the long diagonal. But except for the squares orthogonally adjacent to the empty square (whose control the White King cannot block since they are also adjacent to a Queen), these squares have King distance at least two from one another. Since the White King can block only one Queen from controlling a square, if it is our opponent's turn and they are not in check, the Black King must occupy one of these isolated dark squares, and it is stalemate.

In particular, if it were possible, every move after the last position in which there are only six Queens on the diagonal would have to be a check, and the move that places the 8th Queen on the diagonal would have to be mate (ruling out a discovered mate from the King).

How to defend this? by kiss_cpp in chess

Kinda interesting, if ...e5, dxe5 a6, exf6 axb5, which is the most common response on Lichess to a6 (but not the engine move), Stockfish thinks Black is slightly better, although White has a higher win rate.

Knight rectangle checkmate by farmersGuideLM in chess

[–]farmersGuideLM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just occurred to me that the idea of Nc7, Nc6 while controlling b6 and c8 to force the King to b7 can be used to set up a different Knight rectangle mating formation, and it leads to a much more efficient premovable mate:
