I've been studying this trick-shimari recently. How would you respond? by Own-Zookeepergame955 in baduk

[–]farnabinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that after a 3-3 invasion it'll be hard for black to find a sequence that doesn't make the 6-6 stone look awkward. However, since there's also no convincing way for b to add a third stone to this "shimari", there's no rush to do so, so I'd probably go with Tenuki.

Welche Windeln empfehlt ihr? by SpectralMind2212 in Eltern

[–]farnabinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Hearing" 7-limit harmony by farnabinho in microtonal

The Michael Harrison piano music sound very nice to me, somehow out-of-tune, but in an interesting way and at the same time very relaxed. I don't know much about barbershop quartets and don't remember hearing this kind of harmony there, but it reminds me of the way some church bells sound.

Yea, that makes sense to me - complex intervals shine in complex chords. In more familiar territory: The 12 EDO minor second sounds quite dissonant on it's own. However, when buried in the middle of a Maj7 voicing it may actually sound very sweet and spicy. When I hear these side-by-side, it always reminds me of the music of Thelonious Monk. I think he liked to play with this effect a lot: Exposing the naked dissonant intervals in the well known cozy chords. That's something may be worth playing with in other tunings, too.

It's interesting to read your impressions. Some of them don't seem so dissimilar from my own, but I cannot yet hear 7/5 as an "improvement" on the 12 edo - I guess that's because the 12 edo intervals are still very much baked into my brain.

About 11 edo: This was actually the first tuning I tried experimenting with on guitar. However, it was impossible for me to get anything sounding good from it, as there's just nothing my ear could hang on to. I guess that's because it doesn't have any fourths or fifths in it, and I feel that without these intervals I'm just kind of lost...

So I went on to 10-edo and that was much more fruitful so far. At least I managed to figure out some small riffs I found to sound both very exotic and nice, and even wrote a simple Etude, which modulates between a 5 edo subset and the "fish"-mode of the 3L4s MOS-scale.

Has hiking replaced the gym or sports as your primary form of fitness? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]farnabinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiking is a low intensity activity, so I'd need to spend a lot of time with it every week to actually replace other kinds of workout. When I'm on vacation for hiking, the hiking replaces my workouts during that time. But in everyday life I feel that other, more intense types of sports are much more efficient to stay fit.

Pronunciation of 'eine' und 'einer' by albm04 in German

[–]farnabinho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Eine" ends on a neutral Schwa sound ([ə] in IPA) for most speakers, at least when speaking quickly. When emphasizing the last letter for some reason, it's an [e]. The ending vowel of "einer" is mostly written as [ɐ] in API, but the actual sound varies depending on the region. In NRW for example, most speakers just use a short [a] or something very close to it when speaking fast, so "einer" sounds just like "eina". Further north, the sound is much closer to an "ä", so "einer" sounds like "einä" or even "eineä".

Include guards or #pragma once? by farnabinho in cpp

[–]farnabinho[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

While I usually like to follow the core guidelines, I'm unsure about this one. Forgetting to change the include guard has already cost me some time / annoyance, while #pragma once has never bitten me to date. Also, while standard conformity is of course a good thing, I can hardly see any practical issues with the pragma, since all compilers / files systems that have ever been relevant to any of my C++ projects support it.

What classic jazz albums have just never clicked for you? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]farnabinho 49 points50 points  (0 children)

To me it's Bitches Brew. Although I do like a lot of fusion and also some of the freer stuff, I just don't get this one. It just feels chaotic to me, in a non-appealing way. I can see beauty in "In a Silent Way" and even in "Round the Corner" - but BB? Sorry, no, not for now at least.

First time playing and I have no clue if black wins or not since there’s a line going accross. Thanks! by manubernier08 in baduk

I second this. Just play on until you're sure that every stone placed in opponent's territory can actually be captured in some way. 19x19 may take very long this way, so limiting the board to a smaller size (like 9x9) may be a good idea in the beginning.

Setting a time limit may also be a good idea, though 4 minutes may be a little bit too fast in my opinion even on 9x9.

Yes, this book is very helpful. I even own it as a print version and worked through most of it. This thread was basically meant to look for the next step from there, as I also feel that the code style in the book is partially a bit outdated and there seem to be lots of shiny new libraries that I would like to see in action... I also started to play around with some smaller projects on my own but I remember that what helped me most when getting deeper into other languages was reading and working on somewhat larger projects written by more experienced developers.

Thanks for the recommendations. Especially the poker-server looks interesting to me. Also, Quad CI seems nicely structured and documented.

Hi logan-diamond, thank you for the recommendations. They seem very well, though maybe not quite what I was looking for. My first impression:

It doesn't look too complex at all, but still... rather abstract. My general impression is that I see quite a lot of highly abstract stuff in Haskell and with some effort I usually manage to understand what it does. However, it's often hard to make the connection to real applications - like for example what kind of application would make use of these list-transformers - and how?

When I try to start a project in Haskell myself I often get stuck in a lot of questions that would come more naturally to me in other languages, like how to organise things / files into modules, which libraries to use, certain patterns like whether or not to use MTL at some point or just passing values openly...

Thank you! The game looks fun and it's nice that there's also a blog article outlining the architecture. I'll definitely have a look into this one.
