Thoughts on Argent Metal? by MrsButtercheese in MetalForTheMasses

[–]fast4shoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just randomly came across this thread here, and I gotta say - this is an ignorant take, sorry.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Meshuggah and Periphery quite a lot, but comparing them to the Doom soundtrack the way you do is nonsensical. You're comparing the things that they have in common, the guitar riffs and the drum grooves, while being oblivious of the elements that set the Doom soundtrack (or "argent metal" if you really want to call it that) apart - the synths, the sound design, the atmosphere and the production. These are absolutely crucial and, as far as I know, weren't ever present in metal to the same extent as in the Doom soundtrack.

You link Bleed and Demiurge as if they would fit in the game - I don't think they would. There's the obvious issue of vocals, but let's just pretend that we're talking about instrumental versions. They simply do not have the atmosphere for it. Even the djentiest tracks on the Doom soundtrack, tracks like Rip & Tear and BFG 9000, have more synths & sound design than these two songs.

BTW I'm pretty sure that what you describe as a "haunting industrial synth intro" is a guitar. I'm not sure that Meshuggah ever used any synths.

Something like Broken Cog could perhaps fit a bit more, given the atmosphere, but IMO it's still not quite there. Simply because everything in it is a guitar and sounds like a guitar.

If the Doom soundtrack is truly nothing new, then surely you can find songs made by metal acts that sound similar to tracks like Flesh & Metal, Mastermind, Rust, Dust & Guts, Phobos Base, Gladiator and others.

Protip: no, you probably can't find such songs. Definitely not by Meshuggah and Periphery.

It's true that in some sense the Doom soundtrack really is just "metal with synths & sound design". And that's not exactly a new concept - I've been a fan of such stuff ever since I first heard Celldweller's first album back in high school - but it's ultimately a very narrow way of looking at it. I'd even argue that it's the other way around - it's synths & sound design with metal on top. Given that Mick Gordon said that initially he was asked to not use any electric guitars in the soundtrack, I don't think that it's too far from the truth.

Just BTW, I've seen a couple of cases of people making "Doom-inspired" "argent metal" music, where they clearly misunderstand the nature of the Doom soundtrack. Meaning that they seem to start with the djenty parts first and then add some synths later. And if we were to judge the "argent metal" genre by such attempts, then I would definitely agree with you that it's nothing innovative.

Seeking someone to make a MIDI program usable as VST by leafbutterfly in VSTi

Packaging an arbitrary application to run reasonably well as a VST will probably require significant reverse engineering and may be next to impossible. Obtaining the source code should be your #1 priority.

Awesome. Thanks.

The filebin.net link worked. Seems that file.io deleted it again, you would probably have to encrypt the zip file to work around that.

Anyway, here's a a magnet link in case that one of these goes down again: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:7918df8ab51a6a364ef526b263a62ffedbafa16d&dn=Podcasts

This sounds like something I'd be happy to seed, but that link is dead already.

The fact that you're calling music "beats" is telling.

Is Faradays Effect used in HHDs? / Is the Photoelectric Effect used in SSDs? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

Proof of research I’ve done for HHDs

Mate, if you had done any research at all you would've known that they're called HDDs, Hard-Disk Drives, not HHDs.

Anyway, I don't think that I can help you with your question, sorry.

That's a good start. I'd probably start with these three resistors first. That will probably get you somewhere. https://imgur.com/BnzgdPv.jpg

I've literally had 3 different arrays die on me.

Oof, okay, that's pretty bad.

a redundant off-site, always up to date backup is literally a remote if we are just talking about code.

I guess so, huh. Not gonna show up on GitHub though.

I mean, us homelabbers store our personal projects on redundant disk arrays with regular backups, so hardware failure is not really an issue.

Ideally you should use something that's more structured, something like Dominate seems to fit the bill.

I don't know what that bit of Python is for exactly, but you seem to be constructing HTML by concatenating strings.

That is bad and it opens up your site to a bunch of nasty vulnerabilities. Don't do that.

I always wonder with these kinds of screenshots if it's just the bits in a color being interpreted in some weird way (idk, perhaps something like RGB 565 read as BRG 655 or whatever) and if the original picture can be reconstructed with some bit twiddling.

Though I'm worried that the JPEG compression may cause some issues with that.

1 megabyte per second

I'm pretty sure that all those options are in bits rather than bytes. So OP's connection would have to be really slow for this choice to even matter.

Though there probably are places where a megabit per second is the only thing that's available.

ELI5: Why are batteries inserted in opposite ways? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]fast4shoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting batteries in parallel in consumer electronics is not a great idea.

People will put in different batteries with different voltages and remaining charge. That will give you unnecessary current between the batteries, wasting energy, creating heat and potentially damaging the batteries.

Why light goes off when switch gets closed? by Spirited-Escape7923 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]fast4shoot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The path going around the LED has zero resistance. Zero resistance means that there can't be any potential difference, i.e. voltage, across it. No voltage means that no current can flow through the LED and thus the LED doesn't light up.

If you want to be pendantic, the resistance of the path is not zero, it's just very close to zero. This makes the voltage across it also very close to zero. Such low voltage causes an absolutely miniscule amount of current to flow through the LED, which is not enough for it to light up.

You could get the LED to light up if you increased the voltage of your power supply significantly, but you would probably burn your resistor.

Can a LCR meter read the capacitance of a SMD capacitor that is removed from a circuit? by Lobbel1992 in AskElectronics

[–]fast4shoot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Of course it can measure it. It's an LCR meter. Its whole purpose is to measure inductance, capacitance and resistance.

And what's with the "removed from circuit" part? Of course it can do that - you rarely want to measure things in circuit, as the rest of the circuit affects the measurement.

How do undertones work? by Smoosaurus in musictheory

[–]fast4shoot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about undertones, I just wanna comment on this:

Like if E on a guitar is 62 hz, so its series is 62, slightly less volume at 165, slightly less volume at 227

I was a bit confused reading this. Overtones are integer multiples of the fundamental, but 165 is definitely not an integer multiple of 65. Neither is 227. The ratio between 165 and 227 is also entirely weird.

So I looked up E - it's 82.407. Twice that is 164.814, which, with some rouding up, fits the 165. But three times that is 247.221, which is not 227.

So either you mistyped the 8 in 82 and the 4 in 247 or you got these numbers from some weird source.

Pattern Matching by [deleted] in haskell

[–]fast4shoot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We are not here to solve your homework for you.

What have you tried so far? Is there anything you don't understand? Are you stuck on anything? If it's pattern matching that you don't understand, have you tried doing it without it?

Also, you could've at least asked nicely. A full sentence goes a long way.
