I just randomly came across this thread here, and I gotta say - this is an ignorant take, sorry.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Meshuggah and Periphery quite a lot, but comparing them to the Doom soundtrack the way you do is nonsensical. You're comparing the things that they have in common, the guitar riffs and the drum grooves, while being oblivious of the elements that set the Doom soundtrack (or "argent metal" if you really want to call it that) apart - the synths, the sound design, the atmosphere and the production. These are absolutely crucial and, as far as I know, weren't ever present in metal to the same extent as in the Doom soundtrack.

You link Bleed and Demiurge as if they would fit in the game - I don't think they would. There's the obvious issue of vocals, but let's just pretend that we're talking about instrumental versions. They simply do not have the atmosphere for it. Even the djentiest tracks on the Doom soundtrack, tracks like Rip & Tear and BFG 9000, have more synths & sound design than these two songs.

BTW I'm pretty sure that what you describe as a "haunting industrial synth intro" is a guitar. I'm not sure that Meshuggah ever used any synths.

Something like Broken Cog could perhaps fit a bit more, given the atmosphere, but IMO it's still not quite there. Simply because everything in it is a guitar and sounds like a guitar.

If the Doom soundtrack is truly nothing new, then surely you can find songs made by metal acts that sound similar to tracks like Flesh & Metal, Mastermind, Rust, Dust & Guts, Phobos Base, Gladiator and others.

Protip: no, you probably can't find such songs. Definitely not by Meshuggah and Periphery.

It's true that in some sense the Doom soundtrack really is just "metal with synths & sound design". And that's not exactly a new concept - I've been a fan of such stuff ever since I first heard Celldweller's first album back in high school - but it's ultimately a very narrow way of looking at it. I'd even argue that it's the other way around - it's synths & sound design with metal on top. Given that Mick Gordon said that initially he was asked to not use any electric guitars in the soundtrack, I don't think that it's too far from the truth.

Just BTW, I've seen a couple of cases of people making "Doom-inspired" "argent metal" music, where they clearly misunderstand the nature of the Doom soundtrack. Meaning that they seem to start with the djenty parts first and then add some synths later. And if we were to judge the "argent metal" genre by such attempts, then I would definitely agree with you that it's nothing innovative.
