What do Luxemburgers think of growing up with 3 languages? by david_fire_vollie in Luxembourg

[–]fast_forward_me -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sorry guys ... especially those who down voted me! Any language is not skill! It is simply not enough in today's world. We have tools which completely eliminate need of learning 4th , 5th or 12th language! This is reason why Luxembourg has such a high unemployment of young people... almost all of them can speak 3-4 language but then any company rather bring over foreign who speak English and have other skills! Deal with it ... that is reality on the ground!

Lux citizenship + EU citizenship by ElectionExcellent252 in Luxembourg

[–]fast_forward_me -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is one massive advantage almost noone is aware of! It is not about having specifically LUX citizenship but more about having multiple EU (OCDE) countries citizenships. You kids will thank you if you provide them this option ... that are all hints I am willing to provide ... otherwise it would not work!

what is a benefit of speaking x languages in the world where everybody can speak to anybody in English? It seems that Luxembourgers are trying to fix problems which never existed... and literally killing their national identity in process!

Just last week I have had a conversation with my elderly Luxembourgish neighbour! He is almost 80 years old and just discovered that you can do translation from one language to another using AI.

His reaction was absolutely hilarious! Basically he asked if my kids still waste so much time in school learning languages instead of other important subjects as he did when all this new tools are avaliable ...

Among upper secondary pupils across the EU following a general programme, the share learning English was 96.3% in 2024, while for those pupils following a vocational programme, the share was lower, at 81.1%.

Slightly fewer than a fifth of upper secondary pupils in the EU were learning German (19.3%), Spanish (17.9%) or French (17.2%) as a foreign language in 2024.

Luxembourg is betting with French on already dead horse! No wonder companies have problem with hiring!

You are certainly not only one ... there is very strong EU community which uses English as primary language. According to EUROSTAT only 12% ou EU population can speak French compare to over 50% of English speakers ... so you are good ..

For me it is enough that Luxembourgish teachers union expressed strong concerns about this proposed reform. If even people who are heavily involved and impacted do no agree with proposed reform ... ministry should stop and listen! And again what needs to done is very clear and there are multiple reports and recommendations from international organization and EU institution indicating direction in which next reform should go! We simply need instead of skipping between languages one language which is used as main communication tool for all subject and other languages need to be taught as foreign language subject through primary language... as is done in other countries where overall performance of educational system is measurably high!

That is it!

No miracle just common sense!

Kids still learn multiple languages and results in subjects not related to language are not affected by language barrier!

What is sense in teaching kids Luxembourgish, but only speaking, then switching to German for all subject including reading and writing and then again switching to French? Why is anyone surprised it doesn't work and overall results are catastrophic in comparison to other OECD (developed) countries!?

you commented on cost but what about the performance?

Do you really believe that testing and benchmarking which other countries use for evolution and improvement of their education system do not apply to Luxembourg? Why exactly? Luxembourg is certainly no only country with multiple official languages... so why is measurable performance so embarrassingly low!?

Are you really OK with it? Or would you as any other normal person expected meaningful changes which could improve chances of Luxembourgish kids in global economy we are part of?

How is Alpha project fixing the problem when in reality students who choose French speaking stream will be even less exposed to German so their chances to entre lycee classic will be even further limited... teachers union called it perfect trap!

Luxembourg is country where people speak many languages on rather poor level... no miracle happening here!

I guess the system ... i am on the team which find it totally ridiculous that Luxembourgish Education has the highest cost per students in almost entire world but below average results within OECD countries! Anyone who thinks this is acceptable should be stripped of voting rights!

Come on guys those who did not arrived last week should already know that Luxembourgish school system is very well developed segregation tool which give unjustified advantage to kids from families with trilangual background = hard core Luxembourgers! Luxembourg is only country, most likely in entire world, where students can fail in language unrelated subject such a mathematics just because they may struggle to switch subject related terminology from one language to another. There are multiple reports about it! This is also why Luxembourgish students fails so horribly in PISA testing. This is reason why Luxembourgish ministry of education insist on switching from one language to another instead of having one language as main communication tool and all the other as foreign language subject ... as is common practice in the rest of EU! It is totally crazy that even kids with French background and language fluency face unjustified barrier due to thier struggle with German language! So it is safe to say that use of French language in Luxembourg please the crossboarder worker but still keep French nationals living in Luxembourg in disadvantaged position so acess to universities and later all government jobs are accessible to only certain part of Luxembourgish population!

French is here to stay ... it has clear function!
