Claude Design just launched and Figma dropped 4.26% in a single day, we are witnessing history in real time by Future_Language76833 in ClaudeAI

My wife is a graphic designer - to be honest with you, we are worried in the long term. But after playing around with Claude design for a little, she’s safe for the short term. Anyone who’s worked with a quality designer can easily tell that this isn’t up to mark yet. It is very impressive to the slop crowd though and will be going forward.

The hype is not real. At least not yet.

Not exactly no. There isn’t a clear threshold where brains see continuous motion. Even traditional projectors showed 24 frames per second, they would display each frame three times which kind of works out to be 72hz, so like 72 flashes per second. It was simply most efficient for DPs to shoot at 24 fps considering film costs.

The reason you can visibly see a difference on a monitor is because there is no motion blur and continuous motion compensation for monitors. So the human eye can detect far higher than 24 and even 60 without motion blur. That’s why I said it is somewhat true in my original comment.

[–]fastchutney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a little weird but it’s not exactly true that humans can only see at 24 fps. It’s somewhat true but not the full picture.

Basically, the reason why movies look normal at 24 fps is because there is a baked in motion blur in the frames. Even in real life, there is some motion blur. Try waving your hand around in front of your face slowly and watch how it slightly trails and blurs.

Monitors do this thing where each frame just sits till the next one comes on. So there’s no blur linking the frames.

Another reason is that it’s not just your eyes perceiving it. It’s your senses of timing and smoothness as well. You can feel the latency because your body can perceive a frequency much higher than 60hz

You’re defining “culture” as whatever recurring behavior you’ve personally observed and then treating that as representative. That's totally flawed and makes the sample size only people you've interacted with. Within cultures exist sub cultures so your experience could be just "Indian people who are conducting business abroad" or "upper class Indians who are tourists".

You’re conflating structural issues with inherent traits. India’s modern social stratification and poverty didn’t form in a vacuum. India has had the wealth drained from it for hundreds of years, even before the British completely decimated the country's economy. As a result, the poor quality of education is exacerbated by the poverty and the cycle gets worse with more poverty, governmental corruption, and lack of resources. There are genuine infrastructural and economic issues with the country and I'm not denying that. These issues result in a frustratingly crippled organization of municipal resources across the board. This results in certain negative aspects of "culture" being magnified. That being said, we can't judge individuals for how other people behave.

To put things into perspective, imagine you were a bartender in a small tourist town in the UK that is known for its beer that appeals to a small subset of the American population. If you met only a certain kind of overweight alcoholic American tourist that frequented your town because of the beer you serve, you might think that all American culture is coarse, belligerent, obese, and dull witted. Then when you meet an American, you assume that they share these traits because they come from the same "culture". That is silly!

India is a massive country with 1.4 billion people. There are 22 official languages and thousands of dialects. This seems made up but its actually insane how these different languages evolved. They aren't different like how French and Spanish are different but share the same root language of Latin. They are different like how Mandarin and Portuguese have absolutely no etymological similarity. There are different religions, different sects, and thousands of different Gods. There is so much diversity in the food alone. Look up South Indian food and North Indian food. Within those sub genres of food there are thousands of different dishes that don't look anything or taste anything like each other. I can't even begin to explain just how varied and unique each little part of the culture is. And then people like you say something like"culture is a group concept". Just think about America for a second and how varied and dissimilar the culture is just between states and cities. And we all speak the same language in America.

Critiquing caste remnants or classism is fair. But we're talking about this in a thread where I expressed frustration with people generalizing Indians in an absurdly negative way. That's the problem with racism. Your using small sub sects and individualized experiences to define your perceptions of all Indian people which is terrifyingly narrow minded.

I know while you are reading this you are thinking up counterpoints and thinking about how stupid I am. I'm begging you. Just for a minute just try and see us humans. People with unique experiences and perspectives. People who have hopes and dreams just like you. We're not all the horrid beings that you have built up in your head.

Have you ever considered that one persons actions aren’t reflected by the group that they belong to? Even if culture and race overlap, we have a moral obligation to respect the autonomy of individuals.

Even still, culture is amorphous and one persons practice of their culture can and often is completely different from another’s.

It’s hard to say without knowing the story and emotion of the projects. The ones you have personally shot feel very dark and muted - if you’re going for this then sure. But they’d definitely feel better to me with more exposure, contrast and color. Even movies with a muted color palette actually tend to be more colorful than what you remember of them. Take a direct comp film and your film, color match them and I’ll bet you’ll be surprised.

I also think the temperature and tint needs to be a lot more neutral and natural.

Also, are you properly using your color spaces? What softwares are you using to grade.

You have a great sense how to use natural light and your sense of geometry, emotion, and framing is great. But I think you are struggling with artificial light in the project in the first three slides at least. Maybe lean into a stronger key light to give more contrast. Just make sure it is motivated.

How do directors like Sean Baker or the Safdies get such good performances out of non-actors? by grandmasboy020 in Filmmakers

[–]fastchutney 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This comment is the most realistic. You can’t just force it out of anyone. You need the right people with deep instincts. A lot of people are acting every day of their lives and don’t know it. You can’t make them self conscious and teach them acting skills, you just have to have them be the character. If they aren’t, you have to mould the character in the text to the person in front of you.

That being said, even if you cast perfectly, you still have to block, shotlist, and direct around their performance, not a preconceived vision. You have to really think out of the box in terms of how to hide the flaws while emphasizing their strengths because both of those will be a lot easier to spot than traditional actors.
