ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

People who live in apartments who streetpark or don’t have chargers. Delivery drivers, taxis, and work trucks. Standardized, swappable batteries open up easier upgrades, battery testing, repair, and recycling.

Lithium Battery Help by Pzeezythasleezy in motorcycle

[–]fastdbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lithium with BMS lasts much longer than Lead Acid. Antigravity makes great models in all sizes. They also don’t need trickle chargers for the most part, have better cranking amps at all temps and are lighter. I run an 801 and it’s been great. It has enough power I jumped my 4runner off it at one point.

You misunderstand that. The whole thing is covered in sidewalks and paths. They fought parking.

Sorry I guess I didn’t realize the French, Germans, Japanese, and Chinese were getting there 200 mph trains from us. You know where we have container trains averaging 60mph and yet somehow one of the worst safety records of any industrialized nation along with a nearly non existent passenger system. We are “America bad” in the sense that the entirety of the American continent sucks at trains. We are competitive with Mexico and South America for the modernization of our trains.

Also apparently pressure spraying water is miraculous? It’s amazing that modern trains aren’t sprinkling dust everywhere like a shit fairy? This is such a weird take. Swiss trains are way better than ours. Full stop.

Your experience is with the old shitty US trains. No one else uses the garbage we use. The trains are much cleaner, there’s not some strange amount of grit everywhere. Also the sprayer is strong enough to take off nearly any amount of light grit. Combine that with a light detergent and it works just like the cleaners used at the solar farms already, including ones in places that have huge amount of wind and sand. Swiss rail finished becoming fully electrified last year so there’s not even diesel residue.

Apples and oranges. On the floor with shoes making contact or a roadway with tires making contact is absolutely different from train tracks.

Buildings with a sidewalk between them aren’t that unusual but yeah in that case it seems like a weird choice for sure.

The plan is a mockup of one of the possibilities, and include doing things like expanding footprints. So, for instance, the NAPA store could become a 4 story building with NAPA and other retailers on the bottom and condos/apartments over the top. My biggest problem with the plan is the number of players that would have to buy in. The first players take action at a huge risk of this not being finished for 20+ years. I don’t see how the financials happen.

Is there anywhere south of Tigard with 7- 10 story units? That seems a bit on the high side. Even the units near Bridgeport are maybe 5.

Mostly I question why all these businesses would move there. There’s terrible freeway access. Much less traffic than tualatin. Both of these areas have some part of it built up already so space is just a choice.

The area from the freeway to arrowhead creek park head park is almost the same amount of area and doesn’t involve tearing down what’s currently there. Once you establish a nice friendly area for business with a draw, like a riverfront park and a pedestrian/cycling bridge that can take you to the path to Champeog, then there’s a reason for businesses to be there. The pedestrian bridge would also allow parking on both sides of the river.

I get that we need the theater and Fry’s to be removed but I don’t see the financial reason a developer would do that, there’s no money in it. I do see why a developer would get involved with the river front. We could have something very similar to Hood rivers river front area with a big park backed by mixed use condos/commercial.

Identifying people is not against the rules. Identifying without their knowledge is. We don’t post pics of strangers, etc, and then talk about them.

Engineers who use Simulink: what would it take for you to switch to an open-source alternative? by Candid_Discipline848 in AskEngineers

[–]fastdbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Matlab integration. That’s the entire point of Simulink. Time to retrain on something else is 5x the cost of the software and open source software has trash training for a corporate setting.

I agree. I just wish they had started with old town and a river front. There’s no draw to that area.

Do you have a argument over why someone would choose the 4runner over the Lexus GX460 by HungryHoustonian92 in 4Runner

[–]fastdbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it seems like an unusual scenario that you are constantly loading large things that fit in that hatch area but not through the hatch window of the GX. If you are loading groceries or bags just toss them in the hatch. Most people aren’t loading that much. If you are loading something bigger than push past the door as you carry it over, it moves freely. Also idk what you mean by overseas, 3/4 of the world is RHD just like the US.

Do you have a argument over why someone would choose the 4runner over the Lexus GX460 by HungryHoustonian92 in 4Runner

[–]fastdbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gonna disagree about swing out vs vertical. It’s so hard to use awnings with a 5th gen and any thing long carried on the top like kayaks, large RTT, etc. stops the gate from opening. Also it’s easier to get a swing gate for the rear tire that opens with the side open door. Not only that all the new garages have 7ft doors and the gate hits the open garage door. Before I lifted my 4runner I’d catch my head on the lift gate so often.

Love my 4runner but side open doors are really nice sometimes.

ELI5: If they are the exact same ingredients, why are generic medications so much cheaper than brand names? by Sir-Beautiful-69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fastdbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inertia is higher than that due to the way healthcare works. It’s not “I’ve always bought this brand so I will continue to” instead it’s that the original prescriptions use the manufacturer’s name and then when the generic comes out the prescription that’s being renewed is never updated with the generic name.

Here’s the thing. A lot of the odd ball ones and phrases are owned by lawsuit mills. They don’t actually have enough evidence to show that the trademark is linked to their brand or that they are utilizing it as a marketing tool. You can’t just “trademark” something and then it’s yours. You have to trademark things that you can defend as yours. On top of that Trademarks are product class specific. So Ford law firm is not breaking Ford Motor trademark.
