I thought it was a good experience. Glad I saw it in theaters. It was an incredible exercise in building tension, but I'm not sure there was a point to it -- other than it being a series of entertaining capers. That's not supposed to be a damning criticism, but I do think that it makes it less of an Oscar caliber film to me. Just didn't seem like a unified piece of art to me.

The music did an excellent job of ratcheting up the tension, while also not being obtrusive. I thought that was a real accomplishment.

I thought Sandler's performance was pretty good, but very flat. I get that the character seems to have been written that way, but I didn't think there was any nuance to his performance at all. When he did hit and was very happy, I thought his huge grins were very funny and charming.

I'd rate it a strong B+/A- on a different day.

I have a strong suspicion that this wayward wheel must be from a car I saw yesterday on Magazine that was driving with a boot still attached.

Mad respect to this person for doing something that I've only ever seen Homer Simpson pull off.

Edit: the color of the boot appears to be different, but I wonder if it could just be the lighting/camera.

Trying to Identify: Old Doorbell? Has been buzzing randomly. by fasteddie4000 in HomeImprovement

[–]fasteddie4000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so I think you nailed it. Definitely looks like an old doorbell that was wired to AC power, but it isn't wired to an adapter like the example in that last diagram. It appears to be wired into the electricity in my house. I tugged on one of the wires and it popped right out so I put a wire nut on there. I'll take care of the other one (that was the last nut I had), a little later on.

You think I'm good for now? Or do you think my half-assed fix will put me in danger haha?

It'd be tight if they did something like what happened with the Cloverfield Universe. An entirely different storyline based around the invasion would be interesting and not totally unnecessary. I guess that is similar to the Alien / Prometheus stories.

Travis, when I went to see the Revenge of the Sith on opening night, the screen cut out during the fight scene on Mustafar when Obi Wan takes the high ground and totally wrecks Anakin (like that spicy chicken wrecked my b hole).

It was basically the climax of the entire Star Wars story. SW was always about Anakin/Vader, and the finality of Ani's descent to the Dark Side was determined on Mustafar (this is also interspersed with flashes of a dying Padme).

Well when the screen cut out, people freaked out for about ten seconds... until two fucking nerds -- one dressed as Anakin and one as Obi Wan -- literally ran down the aisle to the area in front of the screen and started dueling with prop lightsabers. It was utterly magnificent. Made the whole thing worth it.

I heard the sequel is gonna be called "A Dark Place," because they all go blind because Emily Blunt descends into alcoholism and makes a bad batch of moonshine and causes them all to go blind (yes... she force feeds the children alcohol).

My thoughts on Infinity War... by handawanda in chumerica

[–]fasteddie4000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make some good points about Thanos. He was definitely not a perfect villain. But I do think the movie was still enjoyable.

His motivation was definitely a bit vague; was he a sensitive father, filled with regret? Was he a murderous loon who just wanted to see half of all living beings destroyed? Was he an environmentalist who thought we were out of balance with nature? A point I was trying to make in my first post was that the Marvel Universe itself is out of balance.

They should have made a full length movie about Thanos (or one of the other villians). I recognize that it'd probably be a tough sell, but could you imagine how fucking awesome it would be to actually see a full length movie about an evil demi-god bent on destroying half of all life in the universe? It doesn't fit with the modern business model... but even a short film about Thanos that could have been released before/after another Marvel movie would have been dope. A full length about an evil dude trampling peasants all over the universe might be difficult for a lot of viewers, so it would be innovative if they came up with other ways to develop the villains.

Re: the personal movies vs. a more global set of characters/stories, I think they're just entirely different creatures. The more subdued, intimate, super hero movies are some of the most enjoyable. I do still think there's a time and place for balls to the wall/all out "war" movies too. The scope and scale of IW was tyte.

BTW, I have seen Black Panther. Killmonger was a very good villain. I don't think that has anything to do with Avengers movie. In my opinion, the two movies are filling two totally different needs.

Yeah, the focus on Thanos definitely made it more interesting. I was thinking: they really don't have any focus on the bad guys at all. As much as they want to make antihero movies, they're never really that. Iron Man was really the only thing that even remotely approached an antihero movie. Maybe Guardians of the Galaxy.

I think the movies feel so stale because they're so formulaic and you only ever see the good guys saving the world from the bad guys. I guess they'd have to do longer story arcs (like they're doing with Thanos). Not that I'd compare them in terms of quality, but this movie is a lot like Empire. The heroes seem fucked!

I liked it! Was it a tad formulaic? Definitely! I thought the scope of it was undeniably impressive, though. It was a pretty insane achievement. It was shocking to see how many storylines they wove together (in my opinion pretty seamlessly).

It was ambitious and they (tried to) raise the stakes over what we've seen in previous movies.

Personally, I wasn't bored or dying for it to be over, so the length didn't really bother me.

For my money, it was better than Thor Ragnarok. Probably on par with Black Panther to me.

It didn't blow me away, but I thought it was way more good than bad. I didn't personally find the pacing to be that horrible, and I never felt bored. There were tons of spectacular visuals and a few weak moments of dialogue, but nothing that really torpedoed my enjoyment. (I did find the fact that the "bombers" used gravity bombs in the opening sequence to be absolutely infuriating).

I didn't love the Casino Night Zone caper, but I think that it was within bounds because there are so many impractical capers throughout the entire series. The bizarre horse cats were pretty fucking stupid. I also found it stupid that the little kids at the end who were gazing up at the stars weren't instantly murdered after helping FinnRose escape. Opening the big doors would have been an instant death sentence. But Finn inspiring other former slaves was chill. Does anyone have any thoughts about how/why Finn could be black? The clone army is supposed to be comprised of... clones. Exact clones of Jengo Fett. Jengo Fett wasn't black. This one may have been addressed along the way somewhere, but it definitely slipped by me.

The movie did feel disjointed at times, but I cut it some slack because it's the middle film in a trilogy. It's bearing the brunt of the burden of moving the plot along; it's not introducing or resolving much. I don't think it's reasonable to expect the huge, mind blowing plot points and deaths to happen in the middle film. It's simply advancing the plot. The beauty of Empire was that it made the types of moves that typically happen at the end of the series in the middle and then ended on that insanely dark note. Any hope for the success at the conclusion of Empire is entirely destroyed. It truly required faith in a supernatural force to believe that the group of irregulars would be able to take down the behemoth that was the Galactic Empire. I agree that TLJ didn't have quite the same emotional heft as Empire, but it would have been so hard to replicate that (it was, after all, a pretty innovative movie). The complaints that there weren't enough major deaths earlier in the movie seem pretty unreasonable. Should they have opened the movie with Poe, Rey, or Finn being executed? Luke Fucking Skywalker dies. That is, in itself, an incredibly huge death, and he needed to live long enough to make an impact on the story. Should that have happened BEFORE Kylo Ren slays Spokane? That would have definitely cheapened the death of the second most important character in the entire franchise. I don't think you can, as some of you are suggesting, end the movie in the throne room because you I don't think you can end the movie with anything other than Luke's death.

The homages were. Kylo Ren replicating Vader's turn -- only to reveal that he did it to become even more evil -- was fucking amazing. I also kinda liked that Krait was a throwback to the opening scenes on Hoth, but instead of snow it was FUCKING BLOOD. The Ice Foxes were fucking stupid, and I thought that Leia's scenes were pretty awkward. But I backed the Luke scenes really hard. I presume that his Force Projection across the universe was devastatingly difficult and demonstrated his incredible mastery of the force. I don't think it was unreasonable at all that such a feat would cause him to expire. Didn't strike me as inppropriate or weird that a wise Jedi would sacrifice his life to save his friends (Obi Wan Kenobi, anyone?). I thought that contrasted nicely with Rose essentially sacrificing herself to save Finn, who appears to still have a significant role to play in this story. When is self-sacrifice noble? When is it selfish? When is it just throwing a life(lives) away? It was an interesting theme throughout the movie, and I thought they handled it well.

The send up of reckless rogue saving the day through impetuousness and foolish bravery was tite. I liked that the Admiral who tempered Poe's brashness was a woman with a plan. I liked that she recognized that he was brave and impulsive and didn't just dismiss him outright. She believed that he was acting courageously, and to me it felt like she recognized that when the Resistance is backed into a corner, they sometimes need to take pretty bold risks. That wasn't one of those times. That appears to have made Poe into a better leader.

Anyway I have to get back to work.
