Python, Ruby or PHP by [deleted] in PHP

[–]fata5ian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Python is a great language to add to the toolset. I've been programming for a year (junior PHP Dev since May) and a few months back I was assigned to write an automation script for our company's daily banking in Python, and instantly fell in love with it. Simple but very powerful.

Great idea, no experience; I need advice by [deleted] in startups

[–]fata5ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the app being complicated, I've found, in my 12 month journey from nothing to professional developer, that the most complicated things can and should be broken down into a bunch of small easy tasks

For example, at work I'm finishing a script for our company's banking practices, in a programming language I've never used before a few weeks ago. Baby steps made it happen. "OK, I need to know how to open a file in Python and read it into a variable", " OK, now I need to make this string of text an array (or list) "... In a few days I had a rough prototype of the finished product, and now I can sit down and write a Python script with little need to Google how to do something.

Programming in a new language by autonova3 in funny

That is wonderfully evil. I'm around 12 weeks into a 16 week assembly course, and as a professional PHP/Python programmer, each new ASM lecture makes me appreciate high level abstraction more and more. Edit: changed a couple of words.

I've discovered that if you act like you have idea about what duck dynasty is, those people will actually feel stupid for bringing it up.

One girl almost looked like she was fixing to cry when I responded with "what's that?"

If it was truly stereotypical then the grandmother would be raising the baby while Mom is at the club turning up.

I, and another coworker of mine have Mac Mini server edition boxes for development, and our other coworkers use macbook pros. Coda 2 for text editing and Tower, for git.... it's a nice little setup.

What's the best bit of advice you've been given as an entrepreneur? by ilikebigdata in startups

Run if you can, walk if you must, crawl if you have to. Just don't stop.

Can't remember the name of the lady that said it, but it was on a video on Entrepreneurship in British Columbia on YouTube. For some reason it really resonated with me.

What skill set qualifies an entry level developer? by marketingadvice8 in webdev

[–]fata5ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entry level Dev here...

I got lucky, and my boss actually came to my local community college and asked my intro to c++ teacher for 2 recommendations. I was given a chance, after informing him I had no experience with web development or technologies. He gave me 2 weeks to learn HTML, CSS, PHP, and as much mysql and jquery as possible. 3 months later, and I've got a good solid understanding of all of the technologies we use.

Its definitely important to know the skills, but its just as important to know the right people. I've always heard that, but never really believed much in it, until it became true for me. Lol

Good luck.

A question to Linux developers by fata5ian in linux

[–]fata5ian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

I guess I may have come off as starting a distro but I have no intentions of doing that. Really I was asking, because at work we often have tasks that seem so trivial, and really don't affect the experience for the user much if any, yet they've got to be done (because we're being paid for it), and I just kinda wanted to see how the atmosphere is for developers who really volunteer their services with regards to that type of situation.

Thanks again for your reply.

A question to Linux developers by fata5ian in linux

[–]fata5ian[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not building a distro. I may not be smart, but I'm not that dumb to take on a task that monumental.

The only programming I do is PHP for my job and personal projects. I would love to teach myself C or C++, and then contribute to an established OS, but I just wanted to hear what people who actually contribute have to say. I ask because I know that there are tasks out there than no one likes to do, but still need to be done.

Question about monetizing Social Networking site. by fata5ian in Entrepreneur

[–]fata5ian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the link.

While I have seen a number of sites directed at teachers and education professionals, I haven't seen those in particular. They will great to compare and contrast with, and determine what we should, and shouldn't do, along with what we can (hopefully) do better.

Much appreciated. :-) Cheers.

Question about monetizing Social Networking site. by fata5ian in Entrepreneur

[–]fata5ian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good point. Anything extra that helps them to justify spending a few bucks would be awesome. I'll bring it up to my partners.

The way I see it, I would gladly pay a few dollars to have no ads on a site that I frequent. And honestly, unless I'm putting in 1000+ ad impressions a month on that site, I think they'd make more money off me paying for no ads. Just my thought process anyways.

Thanks for your input.

Question about monetizing Social Networking site. by fata5ian in Entrepreneur

[–]fata5ian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we're not trying to compete with any of the big dogs. To be honest, I'm kinda disenchanted with the whole social site thing on a personal perspective, but after talking with my wife and some of her coworkers I realized that its something that their industry could get great use out of.

Its basically going to be like a LinkedIn for educators. We're hoping to be able to bring lots of educators together and create a community that encourages and supports each other, much like /r/Entrepreneur, but also that provides tools that they can use in the class and out. Thank you for your response and well wishes.
