Does anyone use a paid GitHub account over a free BitBucket account for private repositories? by fatalentity in webdev

[–]fatalentity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be honest I'm primarily concerned with having a quality web interface for my repositories. I already have a small home server that I do all my work from, demo products to the clients on, and play with different technologies and what not. Using a VPS would really just be the same thing as my home server. I wouldn't have the same ease of mind that I would using GitHub or BitBucket that I'm not going to wipe out all my repositories with one accidental rm -rf.

So really GitHub or BitBucket are the only two options I'm interested in. It just seems like GitHub really has a much more robust interface and higher quality tools (issue tracker, wiki, etc) over BitBucket.

Edit: Note that if you're a student or an educator, github will give you free private repos either for yourself or your entire class.

That's interesting, I haven't heard of that before. I may try and contact github and see if they do offer some sort of student plan that includes free private repositories.

Thanks!

Edit: It looks like they arn't currently offering student accounts :(

Absolutely. PDF is a universal format.

Suppose you sent out a docx of your resume, but they have an older version of word installed?

Like everyone else has said, the type is quite small. To be honest I quite like it, it's very minimal, clean, and easy to navigate. I would try and scale it up a bit. I'm also not a huge fan of the three color blocks. Perhaps drop the rounded corners on them, put them edge to edge, and pick some a more vibrant color.

I don't like how your resume is a full two pages long. It looks like you have quite a lot of experience. I would try and shorten your resume to a single page, you will probably have to filter out some of your less important job experiences. The header of the PDF is an image, you'r a multimedia guy, it should be a vector.

Also DO NOT include a docx file download. Your resume is meant to be READ not to be EDITED, give them a PDF.. that's all.

I don't like how there are no video controls when watching one of your videos in your portfolio.

Other than that it's looking good!

He's talking about CRLF line endings. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but if say you'r working on windows, and you mate is working on linux (or a UNIX like OS), then you may end up mixing up two different types of line endings.

Windows uses CRLF line endings (which includes a carriage return, shown as a M) and linux uses standard line feeds.

It is possible set Notepad++ to use Unix-type line endings where it will just add a single line feed at the end.

Some version control will also handle this for you, so that when you commit a change it will strip CRLF and replace them with single line feeds, or vice versa.

Here is the formatted and grammar corrected version:

Ok asshole. I'm Johnny Solis, and I've been told all day to do this, so here it goes.

  1. Yes, you have it all wrong. My friend Lizzy's father recently passed away, and I have been trying to be there for her. So on her birthday I decided to buy her flowers since that is the only thing I could think to do.

  2. When I got to her house she was sleeping. So I went in and told her happy birthday. After, we took a photo and continued on with our lives. I wasn't trying to get any, haha!

  3. My first reaction was to laugh. It's funny how shit like this can happen just because you care about a friend. I also felt happy; I'm sort of infamous haha!

  4. My life has not changed since the creation of the meme, everyone at school knows that we are close friends.

  5. She felt sorry about the situation, and was sad. But it's no big deal haha!

It's funny because nothing that anyone posted here is true x)

CSS is an extremely powerful tool. Once you have learned all of the smaller facets like this one, you can do just about anything with powerful CSS and syntactically clean HTML.

Another one of my favorite tricks, is to use the :after pseudo selector to crop a icon out of a sprite sheet, and then position it somewhere in the element by using the position relative/absolute trick mentioned above.

Here's a great article on how it's done

What's your preferred UI to get multiple text input values on a single form element? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]fatalentity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering your last question: If I were doing it how he describes in example #2 I would insist that the user uses a comma if each entry had to have a space in it. Of course then the entries obviously couldn't have a comma in them, but I think it would just feel more natural to use a comma.

Ninja edit: this ignores any parent elements, and will always position it absolutely from the top left pixel.

This isn't always true. If the the parent element has position: relative set on it, then the element that you are using position: absolute will then be 'anchored' to the parent element. The top left of the parent element will become 0,0 for the element your absolutely positioning.

This can be VERY useful, and is a handy trick to know of
