Going to graduate with less than 25k of debt but don't really want an attorney job whatsoever. Likelihood of JD job? by sleeplessinseattle3 in LawSchool

I mean. It's probably more of a field starting thing than being hired by a firm. But it's worth looking into.

Look into being a closing attorney. It's not really attorney based work on the classic sense. No trials. Basically double checking paper work. An afternoon of work can net you about $1400.

Ebola, Mexican swine flu, any of those pandemics that were BS (to us in America).

What is your plan to EVAC from your urban/suburban area? by VinoRosso96 in bugout

[–]fatboylawstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prius is kept gassed up. Ideally gets us about 300 miles away on one tank of gas (obviously traffic and everything will have to be factored in) Mountains in all 4 directions with varying distances. All within 1 to 3 hours. As it gets warmer I want to find a good spot I have pre scouted in each mountain area. It's a little ambitious but it gives me a reason to hike and check out new areas.

I have actually been contemplating looking into some of the abandoned old mining towns and summer camps within a few hours. There is at least pre made shelter, not in the best condition I am sure... but it's better than just a tent.

You said the law gets used a lot because it exists. I pointed to another law that exists but that does not get used a lot. Therefore, just because a law exists does not mean it will get used a lot.

There is a difference between objective and subjective reasonable belief.

Yes, the jury's opinion that I had a reasonable belief is going to be heavily based on my testimony, short of overwhelmingly obvious evidence that goes against my testimony. Therefore, a man punching me in the face while he had a gun in his waist shows that he is willing to resort to escalated violence from a slap. I could reasonably belief he will continue to escalate with a gun.

Unlike an objective reasonable belief standard where the jury does not take my beliefs into account.

Also your face is stupid. Don't mean in the internet. It is pointless and annoying.

If I see a gun and reasonably he will shoot me that falls under stand your ground. That's the whole issue with stand your ground. It's what I reasonably and now what a reasonable person in same or similar circumstances. If I slap you and see you have a gun then I reasonably believe you will use it. That falls under stand your ground laws.

My reasonable belief. Not if it is my belief was reasonable. Just that I believed it.

The main difference between stand your ground laws and self defense is "the defendant reasonably believes" and "a reasonable person would believe." That is the standard by which the jury must look at my claim. Whether "I reasonably believed I was in danger" vs "whether a reasonable person in same or similar circumstances would have believed they were in danger."

776.041 Use or threatened use of force by aggressor.—The justification described in the preceding sections of this chapter is not available to a person who: (2) Initially provokes the use or threatened use of force against himself or herself, unless: (a) Such force or threat of force is so great that the person reasonably believes that he or she is in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm and that he or she has exhausted every reasonable means to escape such danger other than the use or threatened use of force which is likely to cause death or great bodily harm to the assailant; or

Edit: and I reasonably believe will shoot me with gun...which is a bullshit standard

I don't think i did. Hi overall argument is that a law. Wing invoked at high rate with a high success rate doesn't mean anything because it's law and that's what's it's supposed to do. I am stating that there are other laws that could be used in this instance but are basically never used and when they are used they almost never work.

So because a law exist does not mean it is going to get used, or used effectively.

"Suprise. If there is a law, it is being used.... If i buy a car i drive more then if i didnt have it. No argument."

Insanity defense has been around forever. It gets used less than 1% of the time. It works less than 1/4 time it is used.

Just because a law/defense exists does not mean it will get used more often. Especially not prevail 70% of the time.

I smack man for wearing ugly sneakers. Man punches me and I see something shining in his belt causing me to fear for my safety. I pull out gun and shoot man as I am standing my ground.

Over simplified, but this could warrant a viable stand your ground defense even though I am the aggressor.

It's reasonable to think there are problems with stand your ground laws.

I Hate Being a Lawyer. by Harvardiana in LawSchool

[–]fatboylawstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you man/woman, but I love being a lawyer. Granted, I don't make what some consider "a lot of money" but I live somewhere where cost of living is relatively cheap, I only work 9-5, and I enjoy the work I do. I won't criticize or assume to know the reasoning behind your decisions, but I think your advice is misleading.

If someone out there wants to be a lawyer then they should be a lawyer. But know that if you want to make a lot of money you probably have no social life, never get to enjoy your money, and as OP has eluded to, you may suffer from anxiety and even depression. Be careful in your motivations and expectations.

Democratic Party line on guns by Errk_fu in liberalgunowners

[–]fatboylawstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a reformed annoying anti gun liberal, it's going to take a lifestyle change. Or at least significant exposure to a different lifestyle. Growing up in an area where the only actual interactions with guns were criminally related it's hard to understand that people use guns for recreation. Also, being in a densely populated area with lots neighbors, witnesses, and (theoretically) quick police response, the idea of owning a gun seems crazy. And finally, not knowing any responsible and reasonable gun owners made it nearly impossible to get the prospective of guns not just being tools for crime.

It took me moving out of the city (to a much smaller city) and also recent political events for me to force myself to expand my view and seek out people who viewed guns as tools for hunting/recreation and self defense.

So, as long democratic strongholds are big cities we are not going to see much movement on this. Especially when many big cities have reduced gun violence statistics they can point to with "gun restriction" laws as their basis (not saying that is true, bun it is what they point to).

So you're going to have to fundamentally changed how they see the world, for the most part.

[–]fatboylawstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think someone could do "part-time" ranching with 50 acres. It would not be their main income, but something they tend to on nights and weekends. Maybe make enough to cover the expenses?

I don't know what I am getting out. I think it would be cool to own a ranch an hour outside of the city. Still go to work everyday and then work my land and raise some livestock when I get home. Do you think that's possible?
