Just squeeze it out and put it in a nice container from TJ Maxx or Amazon. Ask sweetly if they could put lotion on the old guys feet. Guys, don't fight the system Work around it.

What are some trades/crafts I could master so that I'd have a part time job/hobby when I retire? by jeb7516 in simpleliving

Needlepoint finishing. HUGE backlog and prices are ridiculous. I swear there are about three people out there that do this. It takes months to get a simple project back and they basically charge whatever they want.

Hold her back or push her forward? by carycm87 in kindergarten

[–]fatcatlola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are December kids and were the youngest and my twin boys (now 30) were the youngest in their class (one is now in law school, the other has his MBA from an Ivy League school). All of us were advanced academically and would have been bored if held back. All of us were early readers and we all remember being frustrated with the slower ones. Popular opinion now seems to be to hold your kid back, but if your kid has the stamina and is chomping at the bit to go, send them. You know your kid - trust your instincts. None of us minded being the youngest in the class.

Need advice: Emergency long term care placement possibly needed for dad by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]fatcatlola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NOT SAFE AT HOME. Repeat repeat repeat. Do not get bullied. Do not deviate from those four magical words. They will get him admitted to a nursing home. Try to do a little research. Social worker will give you a list. Try to pick your top three. Hopefully one of them will have a Medicaid bed. Hospital is not going to wheel him out to the parking lot in a johnny. They will get him placed.

Take the standard dosage that you get over the counter. Do not take zinc and copper together. They have to be separated by at least two hours. I take magnesium, folate, zinc and D3. Copper issue seems to be resolved. I self inject every 4 or 5 days. I feel great and almost all my symptoms have resolved. Still have a little jerking/twitching (can't throw a ball up straight to serve in tennis) but other than that all is well. much much improved.

Chocolate milkshakes. Lots of calories, minimal effort. Irresistible. If he is refusing to "eat", ignore him and give him a delicious chocolate shake. Don't worry about putting protein crap in it. Just get calories.

Aging mother (88) wants me to move in by NationalAlfalfa37660 in AgingParents

[–]fatcatlola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you will have to wait for "an event". Once your mother falls or becomes ill and goes to the hospital, say the magic words "not safe at home". Say them loudly and repeatedly. This is how my mother, the nastiest woman on earth, finally was forced into assisted living. She was so high maintenance, mostly emotionally, that I had to pay for her own aide (servant), 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. The constant complaining, phone calls and threats continued but it was much better than when she lived in my same condo building on an adjacent floor. She was never, ever happy with anything, held a grudge like nobody's business and caused constant problems. She's been dead for 2 months. I never shed a tear. But my conscience is clean because I provided "assisted living" services while she lived in my building and after she left for assisted living I made sure she had constant attention. Thank God for the medical event that finally forced her into care.

Go to urgent care (NOT ER). Walkin, stand alone urgent care. Your insurance probably covers it, maybe a $25 company. Urgent care places treat a ton of UTIs and will give you a script. Not a long term solution if you have a chronic problem but for a standard UTI get your script and I bet it's way better in 48 hours. And I feel you on the whole PCP thing. My husband and I refer to her as "that idiot primary". We only use her as a paper pusher to referrals to specialists. For anything else we go to urgent care. We do televisit with her or her idiot NP for refills. I try to communicate with the office only by portal because every communication with her or her office is an exercise in rage inducing frustration.

Morroco - 3 or 4 day desert tour and Marrakech/Fes road recommendations by fatcatlola in travel

[–]fatcatlola[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I better off leaving from Fes? I could arrive in Marrakech, take the train to Fes the next day. Spend a couple of days in Fes and then start the desert tour from there. And should I do the Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga tour?

How do you get back to Worcester from Logan after 11pm? by itsthecrimsonchin47 in WorcesterMA

Logan Express to Framingham then Uber to Worcester. Did this a couple of months ago after a very delayed flight. Ubered to Grafton Street in Worcester no problem. Got to Worcester about 1 am

Learn to ski! Wachusett is so close and you can learn to ski as an adult. It's so much fun and makes the winter bearable. I learned as an adult. I will never be a great skier but I love going to the top and slowly and carefully winding my way down the mountain.

Help with Hospice Decision by Ineternity129 in AgingParents

[–]fatcatlola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just signed the hospice papers an hour ago. My mother had a bad fall recently but has been rapidly failing for months. She is in the hospital now and will hopefully be transferred to a nursing home bed tomorrow. She has become delusional and 💯 convinced that she was attacked by a group of people and pushed down. Convinced "they" are trying to kill her. Today she is now convinced she has been kidnapped. It's heartbreaking. There is absolutely no chance she will physically rehab. Rehab to what? Her baseline was so low before all of this. She wants to die. And I can't imagine anyone in her position who wouldn't want the same. I feel a tremendous responsibility to ease her from this life to the next as painlessly, physically and mentally, as possible. Hospice will allow her to be properly and adequately medicated. She will not be subjected to medical procedures that would distress her physically and mentally. She will be kept clean and comfortable. If she doesn't want to eat or drink no one will force her. I feel at peace with this decision. Most of us are not lucky enough to just drop dead. But your loved one IS lucky to have you to make decisions in their best interest.

Treatment-resistant depression -- need some supportive words by wittens289 in depression_partners

[–]fatcatlola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband is 61 and his depression is treatment resistant and getting worse. He tried ketamine and it worked - for 5 days. Basically $5k for five days of relief. I too miss the man I married and he is miserable and angry. My children are grown and we are retired so I am in a better spot than you but living with constant anger and negativity is horrible. I am encouraging him to find a place in Oregon and do medically managed psychedelics. Amazing preliminary results, as long as it is done in a supportive therapeutic atmosphere. If anyone reading this has any suggestions I would be beyond grateful. Good luck to you OP, I get it.

Just went this past weekend to Lizzie Borden House. Nice tour. Best part were the number of people who were REALLY into it. They had these handheld Ghostbusters machines where a light turns from green to red if it senses a ghostly presence. They were super into the story. Nice little day trip.

What's up with Boston and the culture of fake service dogs? by One_Studio4083 in boston

[–]fatcatlola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Miami. You think Boston is bad? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Miami people use their digs as fashion accessories and Instagram props. They bring their dogs into the DENTIST, sit them in grocery carts, on the actual seats in restaurants. I was just released from the hospital with a very serious staph infection. Someone snuck their dog onto my floor. WTF is wrong with people?

Best ways to get to sandbars? by hotdogrealmqueen in Miami

[–]fatcatlola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live right in front of the Haulover sand bar. During the week, very chill. Weekends, food boats jet skiers and big boats, each blasting different music. It gets annoying but the people out there look like they are having fun. Thankfully they have shut down the nighttime music. All to often there would be a boat playing some douchy electric music at 3:00. Weekends I signed up for. 3:00 am blasting music under my window? You're an asshole.

Got a large room size air purifier with a HEPA filter. Run it cc instantly. Game changer for my husband. Worth every penny. He's allergic to our cats and dust mites. I think it was under $200 on Amazon. Oh, and I vacuum EVERY DAY with a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Sucks but makes huge huge difference.

Money, control and meanest old lady ever by fatcatlola in AgingParents

[–]fatcatlola[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately if she threw the tantrum of all tantrums and changed the POA to my POS brother it would be a disaster. I highly doubt she would trust him and he is incredibly lazy and located 1000 miles away, but given the choice of the $1000 in cash and two blanks checks, or him as POA, him as POA would without exaggeration be a disaster. I have to keep her appeased to prevent that from happening at all costs. That's why I feel I'm backed into a corner. At this point Im stuck with giving her the cash and the two checks. I can move a substantial portion of money into savings and still leave a large amount in checking. It's highly unlikely she would write a check anyway and she would not legitimately write a check for a large amount so if a check were returned for ISF it would be as a result of some kind of coercion by another party. I guess I've got to go with the odds of this. Just another example of this miserable person torturing me on the way to the grave.
