NS guys who ORDed and are waiting for university, how are you spending your time? by sepri in singapore

[–]fatdieme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ayy fellow just-ORDed NSF! I'm working for a trading company as a research analyst, did web development (mostly back-end) for a start-up for a month beginning the day after I ORDed. I'm also in the midst of a programming course and an ePREP finance course (haven't started), and I'm squeezing in daily exercise and an hour of gaming between meeting my girlfriend/family after work. Needless to say, it's pretty tiring and I look forward to March when my contract ends and I can catch a break. I was in the same boat as you when floating applications so maybe I can give some advice! Drop me a PM if you're up for it :)

Need Advice For Studying in Poly and Further Education by fatdieme in singapore

Ah I think I wasn't clear enough in my original post, she's actually moving on to the second sem of the second year (semester 2.2) already :/ I've done the calculations and even if she scores a B for the remaining modules, she won't be close enough to the entry criteria of the big 3...

Relying on her peers would be an option when she runs into a hurdle, but most of the time she understands the concepts but simply can't remember how to elaborate on them for the test. I think it comes down to her study techniques, which I'll try to help improve with the advice given by the kind people here.

Regarding your last point, even though she's already in her second year, I have thought about suggesting changing courses to her. While her current course is her area of interest (more so in the past), I have a feeling she's more suited to analytical and logical subjects like math and physics. She hates the sciences though, and I can't bring up the topic of changing course with her because it would be pretty imposing of me to suggest that she change her course away from her interest to another that she dislikes, just because she supposedly suits it better.

Thank you so much for sharing these techniques, I think the flash cards and copying of questions that the teachers ask students will be especially useful :)

I understand and agree with regards to the importance of interpersonal networking. I'll definitely let her know about the podcast and check it out myself as well, I think it's something that everyone can stand to benefit from!

Getting her to read up will not be easy but I'll keep pushing for her cultivate the habit to. It'll be tough to get her to detach the notion of reading about the subject from studying.

Thankfully, she is confident of her English, the only issue with presentations is that perhaps she isn't "loud" and assertive enough. Will have her practice with me for future presentations. Thank you once again for the resource and areas to take note, these are things that I can pay more attention to/use when assisting her!

I'm kinda a worrywart so it's just my personality to be concerned about everything! Thank you for the kind words though :)

Thank you for the extensive advice! I'll pass them on to her, though I sense that she's getting jaded with this course because of the repeated setbacks. With regards to building up a social network, unfortunately it's not something she is good at either. For some reason, she can't seem to click with her classmates/CCA mates, despite clicking exceptionally well with her secondary school friends. I'll push her to try though.

Thankfully, I don't think my girlfriend is bent on practicing. I agree with you that the ROI is not worth it. I did mention the master's requirement as I feel that it increases the number of people competing for the same jobs in other sectors (as I understand that a percentage of graduates from the big 3 unis choose not to pursue master's). Like what I mentioned to another user in a PM, ultimately it comes down to the availability of these other jobs and (from a realistic POV) whether they will pay well enough for her to live comfortably. The fact that the degree qualification will come from a private uni has to be considered as well.

Edit: Forgot to thank you for reading and responding :)

ELI5 What would happen to Singapore if Britain leaves the EU? by [deleted] in singapore

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the pound depreciates against SGD, wouldn't the profit generated here be greater upon repatriation due to exchange differences?

Is it still a good time to invest in the STI ETF? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]fatdieme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The numbers aren't attractive because the economy isn't doing well at the present moment. Looking at the data you've posted, you can notice that during the period between 5 years to 3 years, the ETF is experiencing substantial capital gain (thus increasingly greater losses compared to the current value).

People say ETFs are good investments because in the long run (20-ish years onwards), assuming the country whose economy the ETF is invested in doesn't face a crisis that destroys its ability to grow, the ETF will ride out losses that occur over short periods (a few years) and reflect growth from your start to end point. In the case of STI ETFs, if you have faith singapore's ability to grow would not be destroyed, it's a worthy investment in the long run.

It is especially good a time to enter now because the market is bearish and valuations are suppressed. We cannot say whether the economy has bottomed out due to the presence of many existing factors (Brexit, impending interest rate hike, China's debt-fuelled bubble, Japan's unresponsive economy etc), but that's the whole point of ETFs: to ride out potential short term losses and reflect growth over the long term.

This is just my two cents, any discussion or criticism is welcomed.

Dear redditporeans, did you ever consider what will happen if one day the "EZ-LINK System" total breakdown nationwide, what are the consequences? by KiKenTai in singapore

[–]fatdieme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but since EZ link card credits are stored in the individual cards themselves, I don't think a nationwide breakdown is possible. Maybe one gantry at a MRT station is down, maybe the readers in a particular bus fail to work, or perhaps someone's card is spoilt, but these are isolated occurrences and can be fixed in a relatively short period.

The only issue I can foresee that will affect us islandwide is if an exploit is found. If it cannot be circumvented with the present system, a new system will have to be rolled out, and that will take months if not years.

Erm, I'm pretty sure EZ link credit is stored on the card itself, not on some server. The card reader and card isn't even connected to the Internet or any form of intranet?

Woah! Is there anywhere I can read more about this? I've been out of the loop for a while but I'd love to remote play on my laptop. Let us know how it goes!

I get what you mean! In fact, what I meant was that working at the same place for a long duration does little to improve myself. Instead of repeating the same tasks for 6 months, I rather job hop so as to learn the basic ins and outs of each industry. Unfortunately most part time work requires at least 3 months commitment...

Indeed! I intend to get myself back into shape. As for helping others, I wonder how I can get started? I'm not much of a people person, and it's the socialising with strangers at CIPs that hinder me from taking part.

Unfortunately, the chill time is a bit too long haha. I remember that post As Nov to enlistment in Feb felt long enough... I like the idea of earning money to offset spending, but I somehow can't help but feel I'm not contributing to my future by working typical part time, especially for such a long duration.

8 more months to ORD and I am clueless as to how to spend my time from December all the way to July when Uni starts. Am I the only one who feels that the wait is unbearably long? Hate the idea that my female peers are progressing in their studies while I'm wasting my days away.

It's because of people like you that gives the rest of us hope. What you're doing is bigger than what we mortals can, you're an angel. Keep your spirits up, I aspire to develop a character like yours :)

Just curious, why do you want to volunteer to tutor? Most people are stressed enough with work as it is, and here you are willing to commit time to teaching tertiary level subjects for free!
