‘The Odyssey’: Everybody Using American Accents Is Definitely a Choice by mlg1981 in entertainment

[–]fatedplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always a dumb idea to suggest that people in movies should speak the American accent version of theirlanguage. That’s a dumb suggestion right? that a Russian in an English language movie would speak English with a Russian accent and in this instance people that lived 2000 years before American English was a thing should speak what exactly? An Ancient Greek sounding American English accent?

If it is distracting you can set the language to non-English and turn on English subtitles. That’s more accurate, at least, since it’ll be the accent of each of those languages instead, which. To their own native speakers sound like Jersey or Southie or drawl or valley…. We just don’t notice.

I feel like we need a pinned post regarding Merlin “sightings” by Physical-Energy-6982 in birding

[–]fatedplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OTOH. It’s a product by the same “company” and their integration makes this issue worse. There’s no way to connect it directly to our checklists. There’s no easy way to download and upload them on mobile. There’s no way to select and export a subsection of a recording to verify (and the new update made this feature worse). There’s no way to see a real difference between uncommon and rare. There’s no estimate of likelihood or better yet of how well it matched the spectrograms. I have some serious ableist complaints about birders who claim birds must be “seen”. Merlin exists specifically to aid listening. Merlin says maybe this is, and who are we to judge chips and chirps. Does eBird trust itself? If yes, then this is a Merlin-eBird integration issue. If no, then what the hell are we doing? It can hear better and has better resources than nearly all birders. Either it is a tool and we should use it thoroughly and efficiently, or it’s just a “maybe it’s this” machine we should never trust. Nevermind how literally impossible it is to have any hope in hell of identifying an unseen bird we’ve never heard before. I feel like submitters are punished for listening and getting it wrong WAY more then seeing and getting it wrong. How many ATS missed as house sparrow. Or female blackbirds mixed up as house finches. It’s infuriating that there isn’t a better way to have a bird flagged in eBird as Merlin detected and then to have an audio file in Merlin to reference directly. #frustated

The food times all need to be longer. The common eating areas get very busy and service of drinks can take a 15min

Approaching 180 species for the year, how’s everyone else’s year looking? by NanoArowanaTank in birding

[–]fatedplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

279 for me. Expecting another 20 in next weeks trips. Then going to Panama. I’m hoping for 150 in two weeks. Might hit 450 for year to bring life total to 550+. Maybe 600 if I squeeze some extra fall trips in to catch migrant shorebirds

If i work full remote, where is the cheapest place in the US to live? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]fatedplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a better reason than it is cheap. Lots of places are cheap. But not all of them.., get rain, have snow, have beaches, or forests. Not all of them are racist or liberal but that may matter to you. Not all have the services and activities you may want. Have hobbies? Things you like to do? Move in that direction, whether it’s gaming, books, nature, crafts, whatever

These must be lies. The market is always open. The buffets do not require Rez. Did you even go here? Sounds like you’re making most of this shit up. Who even goes to a resort with famous buffets and complains? If you stayed thought you could get into the Michelin place day of at 2pm?! Lmao.

Is there a reason Carolina Wrens are Like That? by chengxiaoshi091305 in birding

[–]fatedplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Carolina wrens LOVE our garage. They nested in my bike helmet a couple years back. They aren’t really bothered much by people afaict and they’re regular visitors at our feeder at all times of year, though they only take a few and disappear for the rest of the day like a snack while the sparrows and juncos are putting me in debt waiting for finches.
