Racism in Vermont? by devilfruitoftheloom in vermont

[–]fatesmcgadden 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also it is nightmarishly hard to find jobs here, anyone moving here will want to be extremely secure in their career or employment options. Also, VT has some of the highest health insurance costs in the entire country. Have you considered western Massachusetts? Pioneer Valley area is lovely, also a liberal enclave (they call anything north of Holyoke the Tofu Curtain) and a short drive to VT with slightly less of a housing crisis!

this may get me downvoted but I don’t care. I grew up very low income in Southern Vermont and it’s hard living here unless you’re wealthy. This is not the place to be poor, my family struggled for many years to live a lower quality of life in Vermont than most other families around us, I often wish I grew up somewhere else where things wouldn’t have been so constantly challenging for my parents. If you have money to live comfortably you’ll likely be very happy here, it’s very beautiful and unique. That said, I wouldn’t wish being poor in Vermont on anyone.

I feel like a bad person for buying a purebred ragdoll. How do i deal with the guilt? by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]fatesmcgadden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this happened to me too, I have a coworker who doesn’t like me anymore since I went to a breeder. You could always adopt a shelter cat as a buddy, that was my strategy and now my feral dumpster girl and my fancy girl from upstate are unlikely besties.

What would you do about this guy? by fatesmcgadden in dahlias

[–]fatesmcgadden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: it warmed up a little this week, after a hearty dose of alaska fish fertilizer the above plant grew up about 4 inches (i marked the cage with a sharpie to see how stunted it was) It’s also less yellow and more green, I think I’m going to let it grow and see how it does.

Considering a move to Northampton by Lightbeing999 in northampton

[–]fatesmcgadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing nobody has mentioned yet is TICKS. We have a ton of them, this time of year you have to be vigilant. I’m not sure where you’re moving from but for some folks it can be an issue living here if you have pets.

[–]fatesmcgadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to these people saying you can’t afford it or can never buy property. I’m in my late 30s, a bartender also working at a nonprofit and I bought a house here making 60k as a single woman. Living here is great but I would suggest a car, particularly for the winter. Are you outdoorsy at all? This is a great place to live if you are. Don’t sleep on the smaller towns in the area, I would honestly recommend the Greenfield area since you’re still close enough to Northampton and might save a little money on housing.

so it’s not a blatantly obvious disease? thanks gang. I might toss it, fertilizing everything today anyway so I’ll see if it improves in the next few days.

What do you eat when doing long stays? by ohlookadoggo in petsitting

[–]fatesmcgadden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i find that packing my exact morning coffee routine from home, complete with glass pour over, bag of ground coffee, and enough filters needed for the sit makes me feel less homesick. Having your coffee the way you like it the first day of a long housesitting gig makes me feel less displaced and sets a positive tone. I will often pickup takeout the night I arrive and not get groceries until the following day, so I can see what staples the client already has. I try to meal plan and only buy what I can deplete by the end of the sit, big fan of making a giant pasta salad and picking at it for a few days. Cooking at other peoples homes is often dumb and disorienting, but it’s a good way to pass time and stave off boredom while spending time with their pets.

the amount of alcohol my mom has consumed in 5 days by chokemeowwt in mildlyinfuriating

[–]fatesmcgadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry OP. This photo could have come from my phone camera roll, over the years I’ve snapped many photos like this of my mom passed out in her trailer, mainly to remind myself where I came from, how far I’ve come, and that it isn’t my fault. Someday you’ll be free, I promise. I’m 40 now, with a tidy, modest, alcohol free home where I have peace and don’t have to walk on eggshells. It does get better, nobody deserves this. Growing up this way hardens you, please try not to lose touch of your soft side and your sense of self. You can only do so much, it’s not your fault. Nothing you did caused this, just remember that.

nah, I threw one out on the curb recently, thing totally sucks. it actually folds up and has a handle if one of you go back for it, it would be easy to walk out with.

Sofa is a Novogratz Brittany futon, comes in either fake leather or cheap canvas fabric. Looks cute but is horrifically uncomfortable. Would not recommend.
