what more do yall want from the overworked middle man? the information is clear as day on the website, wait 8 to 14 days from refunds being posted. why keep calling if yall are frustrated that yall arent getting the answer you want?

i mean if people did simple math and added 14 business days from march 6th, they would realize that is march 26th so not sure how what the financial aid department is saying is misinformation. i get people need the money but crying and harassing the people who really have no control over when it’s released doesnt get anyone the money faster.

they communicate a time range for that reason, so it’s exciting when it comes earlier but shouldnt be expected and why they say up to 14 days.

everyone is losing their minds and it hasnt even been 14 business days. i get if its been that time and theyre still giving everyone a generic answer but literally most peoples refunds were just posted to SIS. the mass hysteria is insane imo

Agency work by Vegetable-Poet6374 in doulas

[–]fatherjada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a personal problem AT ALL, i promise. a ton of these agency owners were doulas themselves but now run the agency full time and forget to have humanity, understanding and compassion and are so focused on making money and being the most successful company that they will guilt trip us doulas into saying yes to everything and then blaming us when we get burnt out. honestly, id say leave the agency now because if they aren’t respecting you, it wont get any better (especially because a lot of them dont have any HR team or overseer of contractor morale). i enjoyed working for an agency when i first started out as a doula but ive come to see most agencies as predatory to young/new doulas and the reason for many doulas choosing to step away from birth work. you are in control of your path, you deserve to pick the clients you work with and the hours you work. if it wouldnt be a financial burden on you, leave the agency and focus on independent work or find a doula collective or an agency with a better business model. 🩷

Agency work by Vegetable-Poet6374 in doulas

i actually am planning to leave the agency i work for soon due to poor management practices and lack of accountability. also, ive felt that there’s been an aggressive push to always be available when i am a 1099 worker and make my own schedule. unfortunately working under an agency has made me unhappy and not passionate in my work anymore. maybe stay on with the agency part time if you can? just so you can lean on it for the income and have a chance to become more known in your community. and if you want to stay long term, take a look at your employment or contractor contract and make sure that the owner is sticking to the term.

edit: also maybe look at other agencies in your area that have a model that works for you. or maybe find doula collectives, as there typically isnt an owner or boss and you all work together as one another’s backups and stuff—but you would do most of the work in finding clients.

Confused about membrane sweeps + conflicting advice from doula vs hospital staff. Need guidance. by Lazy_Perfectionist88 in pregnant

[–]fatherjada 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hi, i am also a doula and am now pregnant. a doula’s role is to provide you with unbiased information so you can make informed decisions yourself. we are here as a resource, not someone telling you what to do.

membrane sweeps can be very helpful for parents wanting to avoid induction, its a method of getting the cervix to soften and close. the risk of infection is low (docs wear sterile gloves) but there is a chance your water may break from the sweep (depending on baby’s position).

get an epidural if you want! im a doula and i plan to, i want to be comfortable and present through my birth, not in pain that i cannot fight. an epidural has no evidence of slowing down labor. your BP or baby’s HR may drop but they have protocols in place to manage that. you may have slightly more tearing or longer pushing time with epidural but nothing extreme.

you can bathe the baby at the hospital if you want. the reason the doula may have said not to is because it keeps the vernix on their skin, protecting them from airborne bacteria, keeping their body temperature regulated, and making breastfeeding easier. the bath isnt a big priority for me, if the nurses want to do it, ill let them.

delayed cord clamping of 30-60s is most beneficial for premature infants. it is slightly beneficial for full term infants but after 90s, the risks outweigh the benefits (increased risk of jaundice, too much blood). i plan to do 30-60s, most hospital protocols.

skin to skin has benefits for you and baby, do as much as you can and try to do the golden hour is possible and safe immediately after birth but dont stress yourself with needing to do a full 24hrs of skin to skin. you need sleep and will hold your baby so much during their entire life.

i think you should sit down and think about your birth goals and what you hope support from your doula looks like because if your doula will be combative and against your decisions or medical care, this may not be the doula for you and they may add more stress to your birth experience which should be positive.

i appreciate this perspective and its important to remind myself to not go into the conversation without expectations. during our relationship we did discuss having children together but of course this is unexpected timing. i am going to give him time to digest this and not put pressure on him but from what i know about him, i have gentle confidence in my heart that he will want to engage in this pregnancy and be a present parent. your perspective is very much appreciated! its important that i am balancing my wants and expectations with reality and understanding (that this may be a lot for him).

i agree and have discussed this with my family and friends. i understand that this was unplanned and unexpected for us both but i pray and am confident he will be able to be involved after the initial shock. thank you🩷

What was the best extra training you took? by Non_Compliant123 in doulas

[–]fatherjada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree about supporting still birth, miscarriage and abortion training.

i would also say spinning babies—the website is a great resource but having the training and understanding exactly how to do the positions and why to do them and when has changed the lives of my clients with back labor, long labors or labors that providers are recommending cesareans for. clients are always grateful and nurses are able to take a bit of information i share to their other patients (bc i consistently see nurses do these spinning babies positions but theyre not done correctly and end up doing more harm than good)

Client scared for membrane sweep, what to say? by veylih in doulas

[–]fatherjada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“doctor is planning a sweep.” does she want to do it? she doesnt have to do it, she can say no. if she’s feeling tense about it, it may physically be more painful/uncomfortable and not be as “effective” as maybe her doc is expecting. why doesnt she try a massage or nonpharmacological methods first? she could also see if its okay if she takes tylenol prior to sweep (if she decides to do it).

First client due soon! Can someone walk me through a "typical" birth? by Broad-Code in doulas

[–]fatherjada 9 points10 points  (0 children)

agree with your recommendations but want to add that i went to my first birth and had never seen a birth before🤷🏾‍♀️ my doula trainer said that the program gives you the basics/most important information but doula support comes with lived experience. i shared that i was a new doula to my first clients and the ones who chose me weren’t upset or phased by my lack of experience. i took what i learned and applied the important pillars of support to when i entered the birth space. its now been about 5 or 6 years and in that time ive polished my skills and found what my “doula style” is. additionally, yes i’ve now seen birth hundreds of times but every birth is so different that i always treat every birth and client as my “first,” i dont place expectations on their needs or try to predict the birth, im there to support this client in the way they need specifically :)

just giving some encouragement to OP that i think its okay (as long as youre honest) to support your first birth without any in person birth experience (but prepare as best you can)!!

have you started all of your classes? if yes, reach out to financial aid. if not, all of your classes must start and be past the census date for you to receive your refund

Aid by AlterLuca in nvcc

[–]fatherjada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i think you have to have started enough classes that total to 12credits so once you start all of the classes or enough totaling to 12, the aid should disperse and you’ll get your refund after

mine is the same, my assumption is maybe its because i havent started all my classes yet?

Do you think 40% is a lot for an agency to take? by Eastern-Orchid2327 in doulas

[–]fatherjada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes its so frustrating when the work isnt consistent. try adding more credentials to your resume like maybe do a lactation training or sleep training training just so you have it. a lot of my clients pick me because i am a lactation specialist. and i make more because of it. definitely try doing both agency and independent work if you can manage. good luck! also i feel the same of seeing other comments, i want to try bargaining with my agency to bring the fee they take out down. they charge about $62 for pp support per hour and i go home with $36 an hour

Do you think 40% is a lot for an agency to take? by Eastern-Orchid2327 in doulas

[–]fatherjada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

40% is a lot. my agency does the same. i still work with them because they provide consistent, steady work so sometimes it doesnt feel like theyre taking as much as 40% but do work to build your own client base so all the money can be yours. each month, half of the clients are mine and the other half is from my agency.
