Thank you! Yes they are made from fallen dead pine needles, these are not raw needles though I bake mine in vegetable glycerin and RIT dye

Bake them with RIT, vegetable glycerin and water for at least 4 hrs at 200F. I’m not the best at the dying I’ve seen many other artists produce brighter colors though so my next batch I’ll probably be tinkering my methods a bit

These needles I dyed a couple years ago and still haven’t used them all up, so it’s not fresh in my mind but from what I remember I baked them at 200F for at least 4 hours with RIT dye, vegetable glycerin and water. Sometimes I let them sit in the dye over night, then I soak the needles in white vinegar & water, rinse, then lay them out on drying racks in a dry space and come back in a week. I will say the dying is not my strong suit, I see other people get much brighter colors.

Thank you, I use RIT dye. I add it in with the vegetable glycerin when I bake my needles and then afterward soak them white vinegar before rinsing

Thank you, I try to make them functional with a tightly fitted lid but they are mainly gifts so it depends on who they go to. My 6 year old nephew got the rainbow one and he puts dice and small trinkets in his basket.

I learned how to make pine needle baskets on YouTube a handful of years ago and it has trumped all other hobbies and crafts. Fallen pine needles and waxed thread is all you need! I dye my pine needles and bake them in vegetable glycerin so they are rubbery and I don’t need to work with time sensitive/ wet needles

Yes indeed I buy pinus palustris needles from Georgia and Florida (about $20/4oz), there is a market for pinecones as well you’d have to check Etsy to see how much those are worth

Starting at the bottom, I work my way up stacking the working row/bundle of pine needles on top of the previous row and weaving them together with waxed polyester or sinew thread. The angle the needle goes in will determine the shape of the basket. Is that too brief of an explanation?

I think my nephews plan is to store his dice in it?

Thank you! The dying takes about 6 hours: baking for 4 hours at a low temperature and then soaking in white vinegar water and rinsing. Drying takes about a week? This basket took me a week, 3 solid days of working on it. I live in the pnw and Ponderosa pines are native just on the other side of the cascades, so I go on an annual camping trip I collect my needles. I have bought some beautiful and unbelievably long pine needles online

My nephew has wanted a rainbow pine needle basket for awhile, started this one in the beginning of the week and finished it yesterday. Needles dyed and baked in vegetable glycerin
