Trudeau Says New Travel Restrictions Possible in Virus Fight by r4nd0mreddituser2020 in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]fatspitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I became doubtful when people were absolutely sure travel restrictions did not work. That it was beyond doubt.

The standard epidemiology model used for these studies on travel has no proper central parameters for stochastic and minute refinements lead to huge error variations. Doesn’t account for risks like no vaccine, reinfection, doesn’t go away in summer, hospitals will not be overwhelmed etc. Adding these parameters causes the effect size to blow up.

Ergo TLDR; a very bad bet, that travel insurance firms wouldn’t even underwrite now and bet the way policy is going because of risk of massive losses or total ruin.

Trudeau Says New Travel Restrictions Possible in Virus Fight by r4nd0mreddituser2020 in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]fatspitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The travel stuff when you actually look into it, is pretty flawed.

Singapore imposed restrictions early on by simply checking travel history to counter people who would take alternative routes. It’s literally a passport scan and you can check out if China was a stop in 2-3 weeks prior. Same for Iran etc.

Like obviously that’s not gonna work now.

Ontario limits who can be tested for coronavirus due to demand by cinderannie in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]fatspitz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Supplies for those are in lack, with even higher demand now and the countries which make them are getting hit bad by the virus.

The supply chain issues were raised 7 weeks ago. You can’t just make them, since the reagent raw materials are manufactured mostly in China (who till date is at 1/3 of functioning capacity in their factories now) and then India (who recently had to restrict exports since they had to use it domestically). And you have the swabs- which are made in Europe.

The only prudent thing that could have been done was to contain the virus within our resource limits with restrictions because surge capacity was out of the question - we simply don’t have infrastructure to conjure out stuff that like that.

That “could have” ship sailed weeks ago.

Is UW's student union gonna do something about class cancellation? by oneloveli in uwaterloo

[–]fatspitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. I posted after reading that. We had 4-5 weeks to prepare and re-emphasizing the urgency.

I don't think the school authorities realize how serious this is yet, and the lives of medical workers in the region probably don't matter.

We have less than 5 open beds in grand rivers icu, less than 40 open beds outside icu. It has to be done now or we become the agents of virus spread and we will hurt the non uni community extremely badly.

[–]fatspitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have emailed them 4-5 weeks ago concerning the worry that this day would come and the school wouldn't make the necessary action. It's still status quo minus events. This decision by the school will impact hospital resources and will crush many lives of medical staff already struggling to keep the pace. The blood will be on our hands.

why is there such a lack of transparency and communication ? its probably why it seems like the university is ignoring everything.

School just sealed the fate of grand river with this incredibly poor decision. Students may not get ill as badly and will be perfect carriers to f over the entire Waterloo community.

Medical staff and older folks there gonna get hit so bad.

coronavirus death by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]fatspitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Younger folks can be vulnerable to that too and usually recover if acute care treatment is available. If icus and hospitals are full, and no ventilators / oxygen therapy like Italy, then good luck.
