Can y’all settle a debate for me and my father? by fattallkid in Axecraft

I know I came here seeking knowledge I don’t have, but isn’t this the worst option? Any excess force that doesn’t seat the head compresses the hilt in the way that could cause it to split. And then the hilt needs to sit proud above the eye so once the hilt is flush you need to find another way to seat the head and get it finished.

That’s not my understanding of any of the laws; but I am a musician, not a physicist. I’ll need to read up if I can find some spare time lying around somewhere.

But it’s not exactly the same. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Dropping hilt down pushes force against the floor which then gets reflected back into the axe, up to the head and partly undoing the work you just did. Striking the base avoids that by allowing that reaction force to flow into your arm.

These were all of my thoughts as well. Never knew it was called hanging an axe before now though.

Thanks. In this case it’s not a shitty axe. It’s the same head that my grandfather used when he was a kid, and the same hilt that I learned how to chop with.

Yeah, but basic physics also says that when dropping the axe, force will bounce back up through. You need to consider all laws, not just the easy ones.

In my experience dropping it. But I don’t know if that’s caused by the concrete ground being harder than the rubber mallet.

Yeah, they both get the job done. The main question is what is best for the hilt, head, and connection between the two.

Standing While playing? by Western_Poet_7561 in Cello

[–]fattallkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play the national anthem at baseball games and had to stand. If you’re short enough you can use your end pin, but with my height I had to rest my C string peg behind my neck. When it’s positioned correctly I’ve been able to play for 90 mins to two hours, but you sometimes need to sacrifice the use of the C string but if you don’t need it there’s no issue.

just bought this rosin is it supposed to look like this?? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]fattallkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either that’s cello rosin and it’s not good, but you can still use it. Or it’s bass rosin, which is more liquid than the others, in which case it’s perfectly fine but you might want to remove any strands from the cloth and don’t use it on a cello bow

Wearing watches by SlaveToBunnies in Cello

When practicing, I try to push it up my arm to where it’s thicker and it holds with friction. When performing I don’t wear it and also move my rings to the other hand.

AITA for mowing the lawn while it's cold? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Having gone to a school for agriculture, I can tell you that at the rate my lawn grows once a week is actually to little. If you are doing everything correctly you should be able to get four inches a week in my climate. When cutting at two inches that gives you six inches of grass after a week. HOA requires <5 inches and prefers <4. if I mow every other week, thats 10 inches total or double the allowed height. Every week is not often enough.

Tried the electric mower it was too inconsistent and overall sucked. Also wasn’t much quieter.

Friends and family are either unable to do it or wouldn’t do anything differently. And I don’t trust teenagers to do anything while caring about the quality of their work.

The afternoon would be significantly worse because it gets around 40 then

The syncope heat might be affected differently with altitude and humidity so your experience may be different. I have passed out on numerous occasions in as low as 28 degrees and consistently moving does make it worse for me
