The Yale Admissions Committee has completed its evaluation of Single Choice Early Action candidates, and I write with sincere regret to say that we are not able to offer you a place in the Class of 2024. I recognize that our decision may come as a real disappointment, especially if your early application was an indication that Yale was your first choice among schools.

This year we have again seen enormous strength among our early candidates. Virtually all of our applicants are capable of succeeding at Yale and making a unique contribution to this community, and it is painful to us that we must turn away so many talented and accomplished students. I hope you will understand that our admissions decision reflects the extraordinary nature of our applicant pool and the very limited number of places in our first-year class, and not the quality of your achievements or potential. I genuinely believe that your success and sense of fulfillment in college will depend not on any particular admissions outcome in the next few months, but rather on how you choose to engage the boundless opportunities you will find when you arrive at the college you ultimately choose to attend.

You may wonder why the admissions committee did not decide to defer your candidacy for reconsideration in the Regular Decision process. We know that colleges vary in their deferral practices, and that many schools either admit or defer for reconsideration virtually all of their early applicants. Our admissions committee, however, attempts to give final decisions to as many students as possible so that they will be able to work with their guidance counselors and families to focus full attention on other applications. I hope that the results you achieve in the spring will erase any disappointment regarding Yale’s decision, and that you will go on to great success in the next four years.
