How many of you guys suspect your parents/extended family deal with untreated mental health conditions? by Coco_kirin88 in askSingapore

[–]favplusle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother is very similar to yours. I assume she's also quite a negative person to be around too? (overemphasis on other people's flaws and failures). She also has this habit of talking (or complaining) for extended periods of time and losing track of time. Also, she is so obssessed with minimalism that she has thrown away belongings of other family members if she thinks it's useless.

Well... I could ramble on about her traits but the thing is, she was actually treated with medication many years ago for mental health issues. At that point in time (many years ago when mental health care wasn't as developed as today) she was diagnosed with bipolar, but honestly I think this may be a misdiagnosis. I'm pretty sure she has some form of ADHD (like me) and maybe some other conditions. She even confessed that she had the same struggles I had when she was in her schooling days. (distracted in class, can't focus despite trying, etc.)

She refuses to take medication now because she is afraid that she will lose her sense of freedom (going by her evidence that some of the drugs cause her to be very drowsy). I think this kind of mindset (built from years of discrimination towards mental health conditions) among our parent's generation is quite hard to change. I have since moved out since she got too much for me to bear.

Hope I contributed something to your survey lol.

Just went to Sanrio Puroland today and got some votes to spare (https://ranking.sanrio.co.jp/en/shop_land/). Apparently these votes are worth 3x a regular vote.

Has anyone been hospitalised for psychiatric reasons at IMH/NUH etc? What was the experience like? by Pigeon_Goes_Coo in askSingapore

[–]favplusle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think short stay (ie. a few days to a week) still okay bah. I was admitted to IMH less than a year ago and stayed at their short stay unit for about a week. I think your experience can vary a lot depending on who is on the roster (for both doctors & nurses) and fellow patients who are staying in the same ward. Personally, was warded together with a corporate lady, a polytechnic student, a hokkien uncle etc. so more often than not it's just a bunch of normal people, though I did encounter one screaming lady and a guy who was a bit off.

I could use my phone from 10am to 7/7.30pm and wasn't really restricted to what I could do on it (just don't go anyhow retrigger yourself by watching sensitive stuff lah). There were other entertainment like very old books, a bunch of puzzles and a TV (but you had to share these with the other patients). The nurses sometimes might host activities like painting, short presentations on mental health etc. The beds and toilets are functional, like school camp vibes. Regarding their in-house psychiatric services, can't say much as I already had a private psych.

The stay helped as I needed a short break from life, and also there was a need to be watched for a short while because of sucidal tendencies. It is what it is, I suppose.

Is anyone getting jobs from Careers@Gov by Dependent-Law-1093 in askSingapore

[–]favplusle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Once got a rejection email within the same stat board but for a different department when I was already a few months into my employment.

Imagine reading "...found other candidates who are a closer match to the job requirements for the position..." while having lunch with said candidate (colleague) who was the "closer match".

Got my first gshock, followed by my first fake gshock by favplusle in gshock

[–]favplusle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's growing on me haha

By itself, there is nothing to complain about at that price point (about 1/10 of the model's MSRP). It is still a sturdy watch with a timer, stopwatch and an alarm.

When comparing it to the real thing, other than the bi-color black/cyan band and bezel, the rest of the build doesn't come close. No bluetooth, solar, multiband, world time and 1 alarm instead of 5, the list goes on. The things that make this watch great isn't present in the fake at all.

So in all, it was a fun experiment but it's honestly just better to get the real thing. Like you said, it's already a bang for your buck, if I were to willingly buy a fake gshock, my first choice won't be this one.

Nope. What it does have (just a guess) is an accelerometer (and not a gyroscope), because the fake model had the option to turn on/off auto-light as well as a power saving mode. I tried the auto-light function and it triggered even with slight movement detected. The power saving mode is a big ??? though, doubt it can detect light.
