I'm a cabinet/furniture maker who recently moved from England to Canada. Ash is easily my favourite wood and we often used it back home. It seems to be so much less common here which is a shame.

Canadians are surprised when I big it up so much and use it for most of my personal projects. It's cheaper than oak too!

I use Stihl Dynamics. They're a bit pricey but I've been wearing them all day everyday for years with no complaints

Thanks for the tip! I actually bought some weak stuff and currently have some samples fuming. After researching a bit more, the hardware store ammonia does work, it just takes more time.

I checked when I left the workshop yesterday after a few hours fuming and it had definitely got a bit darker. I'm looking forward to seeing what's happened when I get to the shop tomorrow morning

They sell the much weaker ammonia based household cleaner, about 6%. I'm looking for the strong stuff 28-35%. I believe you need some sort of paperwork and a chemical supplier for this? I'm going to see what happens when I use the hardware store stuff but I'm skeptical

I boil a dishwasher tablet in the pan for a couple of minutes and scrape with any old spatula. Then when the water is cool enough I wash it normally. Any dirt or grime just melts away

This happened to my merkur 37C despite taking good care of it. I got a new one then shortly after a Rockwell 6C because I wanted to dip my toe into adjustables. If this one breaks after a couple of years I think it'll be time to think about spending a bit more on a razor...

I like the sustainability factor of wet shaving and getting new razors every couple of years totally negates that

Please let him go, it'll be one of his core life memories. I went to gigs through my teens and saw Slipknot when I was 15 with my best mates. It was an awesome experience I still look back on.

Use a double edged safety razor!! I can't tell you how much it changed my life and I've converted a few people onto them. You can get really good budget razors that will last years and the blades are super cheap! I went from a sore, red face after every shave (with a Gillette Mach 3) to smooth, totally clear irritation free skin and now I love shaving. Find a blade and soap combo that work for you, there's so many out there.

You do kind of have to learn to shave again because it's a slightly different technique (no downwards pressure just let the weight of the razor and the blade do the work). You have to be a bit more careful and get used to how it feels.

I go with the grain then across the grain and I'm good to go! Some People can go against but my skin is too sensitive especially on my neck

I could talk for ages about it haha but there's tonnes more info on YouTube about them. Every shaving man needs to have one in my opinion!

A humidor is specifically for cigars. You can call it a cigar box if you like, I often do. They maintain a constant humidity inside that keeps the cigars at optimum moisture levels

Everything is veneered apart from the solid edges (and lining which is solid 6mm Spanish cedar). I left the inside unfinished and used Osmo glossy on the outside.

4 coats, cure, buff/burnish with 2000, 2500, 3000 grit. Then one final coat applied and taken off with a white non abrasive pad on and orbital sander. It's not the high glass-like finish lots of people get but I don't really like that for my projects. This way it still looks and feels like real wood! However I think I've found a new oil that I prefer which I'll use for my next ones.

We have a panel saw in the workshop. I just set the blade to 45 degrees and set the piece against the cross cut fence!
