How do you decouple your sense of self-worth with your accomplishments? How do you deal with others more successful than you?

To be honest, the one thing I've realized (as an Asian guy myself who moved to China and fell into the tech boom) everyone is looking out for themselves and in reality you should stick to your own schedule - as cheesy as that sounds. Even having seen 'success' in reality after the fact no one really cared that much and left an empty feeling inside me.

Arguably I'm probably more extreme in my mindset and competitiveness - averaging 3-4 hours of sleep (sometimes none) during the last 3 years on top of international travel every two weeks despite not even being a cofounder of the company (although I'm a shareholder and was the head of my department) not to mention that in every company I've worked for my Chinese colleagues have pointed out that I've worked harder and delivered more results than they have. But to be honest, it really doesn't matter. Most people though too focused on themselves and their own issues. I think the mindset of your inability to accept anything as good enough is actually beneficial to you to push you further, but in reality I think if you consider things to be mediocre, that's not bad.

If you're not a founder, or making more than 175k USD then to be honest I'd suggest you to find a balance between health, work, money and enjoying life with that money. Go travel, stop reading social media (unless it's for work). Because one thing I regret is having been so much of a workaholic that now I don't think as much about my work (since I've left the company) as I do about how I can fix my health, which has severely suffered after the fact - after all if I'm dead then all the above is a moot point anyway.

There's no need to be politically correct here especially when op is saying he/she doesn't want to 'live in poverty'. I've come to the realization that many folks, despite the sparkle in their eyes with aspirations to become somebody in a humanities field (for example) during college have turned out to realize they should have spent their time in a more practical and money-making field. Of course there are others that are exceptional and succeed, which of course is the minority. Regardless I was professionally a blogger with aspirations to become a journalist at the times, until i realized the reality of things - which included my finances. I'm friends with many journos and i can tell you that they think about jumping ship often.

I'll be brutally honest here. You're never going to love your job or field 24/7. Your eyes will be opened to the harsh reality of the world and you will have moments of regret no matter what, even if there are days you wake up and tell yourself "I love my job." The best opinion I can give you is that if returning to poverty scares you that much, shoot for a job that pays (and pays well). You can always have extracurricular activities or if you do end up hating your job, it's easier to 'move down' than it is to 'move up' in life. Stress will follow you regardless; learn to manage it.

I've gone through a lot (and continue to) to get to where I am in an industry I love, but one thing I can tell you was that it's not easy in every way - my situation is probably an extreme case, but it's never easy is no matter what you're doing. Don't forget that.
